See this link for typical weather the two times of the year you are looking at. About 90F first week of Sept is a typical high, and about mid 80's for April/May. April/May will have less rain typically also. Crowds are lowest in Sept. Kind of a trade off. Either is a good option IMO.
We've done 5 years of late Sept and have loved it. Of the five years of September travel, only one had decent rainfall (3-4 out of 9 days in 2013). Last year the crowds were higher than we experienced in the last 5 years. I think that's true regardless of time of year anymore though. The economy has improved enough that even the slow times have pretty hefty crowds.
