Want to go to Aulani and was checking airfares. Christmas time seems to be running around $2000 or more per person. Ouch! What airfares have people been getting and when?? I may have to reschedule this trip to next year as I'm not spending $8,000 to $9,000 for a family of four. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I stalked different airlines and different times of year. Since I am a teacher I don't have alot of flexibility. I finally got the Hawaain airlines CC thinking that would help (not really that much). I finally got flights for about $ 835 per person direct from NYC to Honolulu on Hawaiian airlines...July. It is a hard hit (we are 5 in our family)-however I sort of counted that like park tickets!! Little did I know how much excursions can be!!!

Sounds like a good price. Is this direct or non-stop? If direct, where does it stop?

My DH will only fly direct...he is a baby!! I would have preferred a stop in CA on the way home, but his work is busy in the summer so lucky I even got him for 10 days!!

Oh specifically we take off from JFK...

OK, this is the confusing part. In the airline world, "direct" means the plane stops someplace before the final destination. i.e., point a to b to c, but you don't need to get off the plane at b. "Non-stop" is just what it says, you get on at A and the plane flies to C without an intermediate stop.

If you mean the week AFTER Christmas, the odds are less than good. I think all of the east cost converges on Hawaii : ) Did you try the week before Xmas?

I have a travel folder in my email for each calendar year to keep track of all my travel related things (flights, hotels, outer island packages, etc.) and it looks like I’ve never paid more than $900 r/t from DC - HNL over the Christmas break. Generally I arrive 2-3 days before the holiday and leave on Jan. 2nd or 3rd. I'm wonder why the prices are so high! I've never seen that before.

Excursions don't have to cost a lot (but I recommend having a car; I wouldn't go without one). Pearl Harbor is free, Dole Plantation is also, but you can do things that don't cost much there (we don't shop there - the flea market at the stadium has similar things at a fraction of the cost. The Entertainment Book has coupons for things like dolphin snorkel trips for BOGO free. Beaches are free. Local restaurants can be very inexpensive (we tend to eat out for lunch more than dinner, then grill dinners a lot).
