It seems the great majority of preferred view rooms overlook either the main pool or the quiet pool facing MGM, the Swan, and the canal that leads to MGM. Standard view rooms overlook mainly the front entrance and are booked way way way in advance because they cost fewer points per night. Some standard view rooms do see fireworks, but not all. They are really not bad views...you do see the parking lot off in the distance, but it is really blocked nicely by lots of landscaping, ponds, tennis courts, etc. The boardwalk views have to be specifically booked (and again are usually gone way in advance).
If it makes you feel any better, we were in a standard view studio for our last visit in a room about as far from the lobby as you can get. We timed the walk one day and it was 2 minutes and 45 seconds. Now we walk pretty fast, but it's really not THAT long. The other big plus is that if you are far away like we were, we were so close to 2 stairways - one that goes out to the bus stop and parking lot, and another that goes out to the quiet pool. Perfect location for us. Since we had a rental car, we went towards the stairways about half the time we left the room. The other half of the time we would go towards the lobby to go to the boardwalk or EPCOT. It all comes out as a wash in the end or at least it did to us. One thing is if you are far away, you might ask for a room on a lower floor because these are just stairwells - no elevators. We were on the 3rd floor and I think near that area there are only 4 stories. Second floor might be ideal...just one flight of stairs (we are not fans of patios).
Good luck!
