Best prices on Legos?

My kids have become Lego-maniacs, especially after this last trip to Disney. They are now really into the Indiana Jones and Toy Story sets. I registered for the Lego VIP program and DTD, but I'm wondering where is the most economical place to buy Lego sets. Does anyone know of a good source? I have found that Target, Wal-Mart, TRU, and Amazon all seem to have roughly the same prices on the sets, except for the occasional BOGO at TRU.

Is there a Lego store near you? My favorite way to buy Legos is to get the "surprise" bags they have in the stores. They have the wall of Lego, and when kids mix them up, or they get sets back as returns, they dump all the Legos into a bin. When the bin is full, they bag them up and sell a pretty nice-sized bag for $7. We have gotten some super-cool pieces that way. We do buy sets, but my son is not the type to keep sets organized, and they all wind up in a common lego bin after he makes it one time.

Watch for sales and also sign up for the lego.com email as well as Border's, they send out 20-40% coupons that can be used on Legos, but their selection is limited

Mom2Ben,

I just checked, and yes we do have a Lego Store about a 45-minute drive away. I may take the kids there for a special outing soon. The Lego Store at DTD was the first one I had ever been to, and we didn't have much time to look around as it was getting very late for the kids. Looking forward to exploring!

By the way, your DS sounds like mine as far as keeping his Legos organized! But when my DS can't find a piece to one of his sets, he feels like the whole thing is ruined (even though he is the one losing the pieces)! What has helped a little is that I bought some small, cheap Rubbermaid plastic tubs for keeping the individual sets. I cut out a picture from the box and tape it onto the tub so he knows what pieces go in there. For some reason, he is much more likely to put the pieces back into the tubs and stack them all up than put them back into the original boxes.

Ecb, I just signed up for the Lego emails. Thanks for the tip about Borders. Didn't know they carried Legos. I do get those coupons quite often.

I find that Target and Wal Mart have good prices when they run sales on them. Around October Toys R Us usually runs a great sale if you buy 2 get one free set. I usually take advantage of that sale for Christmas. Their prices are not great any other time though.
I do like the Lego store VIP program because the points add up and can be used for $ off. Sometimes there are online coupons for Lego.com also.

I have a 6 yo Lego-maniac too. I find the clearance section of Walmart has them (my guy is into Star Wars and Indy Jones Lego). Also, I keep an eye on fatwallet.com and occasionally people find Lego deals and post them there.

Our Kroger store put a bunch of their Lego sets on clearance last July (I remember because I bought for a nephew's birthday). Keep a lookout. Also have found some on Target clearance. I like to give Lego set ideas to grandparents for birthdays/Christmas because they don't mind spending a little more and it is a specific item that is easy to find.

If you can catch a sale at one of the mass-merchandisers (Walmart/Target), that is usually the way to go.

Do keep in mind that Lego products, as a whole, tend to be price-fixed by the manufacturer...

I have an 11 year old that has been into it for a few years. Lego prices seem to be a little like IPODs. Somehow they are the same no matter where you go. I can't say it's price fixing, but....When Walmart is the same as everyone else, you know some one is controlling that.

What about ebay or Craigs list. Maybe you'll find someone who's kid is just growing out of it, or has a lot of it that wants to get rid of some?

Good Luck.
