I know three people who have Rio's and they LOVE them. One is the ultimate tech buff and did a lot of research prior to his purchase. They are cheaper than the IPODs and have more features and are cheaper. You can also put whatever songs you want on them and organize them the way you want.

On an ipod, you can put whatever music and organize them whatever way you want.

The IPODs are expensive because they have an OS inside (like a palm pilot) so they can technically function as an organizer/planner thingy. I dont think most people use it as such.

The first ipods only stored, organized and played music. Some of the first people who bought them realized that the ipod was basically a tiny hard drive and you could do other things besides play music, so some of them wrote programs that allowed their ipods to function as an organizer/planner thing. Apple picked up the idea and added software to allow the ipods to function as planners out of the box.

ipods come with everything you need to use them. There are a lot of accessories you can purchase, but they are accessories, not necessities.
