We are coming down for our first trip in 20 years in our Motor home. Any ideas on where to overnight? How far should we go the first day?

Thanks for any ideas!!!

If just looking for a place close to Rte 95 and one overnight, I would say to try the New Green Acres in South Carolina.

If a few nights to relax on the way, try the Hunting Island State Park campground on the coast, only about a half hour off Rte 95 and beautiful campground right on the water.

Or, I guess you could try some Walmart parking along the way (some do on this board) or maybe try the South of the Border campground.

Do you do long road trips regularly? How many miles per day do you like to drive? Any thoughts on trying the Rte 81 south on your journey to see some fantastic scenery?

This will be our first long trip. Usually just go within 150 miles of home. I don't mind driving though. Thanks for the tip.

Also consider any tolls into the equation. On our April vacation in the DC area we drove down going through Pennsylvania (I-84 to I-81, then I-86 I think) because I really hate driving through the metro NYC area.

On the way home we got a fairly early start on a Friday which looked like we would be going through NYC in mid-day so I figured the traffic would not be too bad right? WRONG!

First thing, I think we paid $23 to cross the bridge from Delaware into New Jersey. Then it was around $55 to $60 take the NJT. Then it was a "How much you got?" kind of situation to spend a glorious three hours on the George Washington Bridge with so many pleasant New York City drivers.

I really like going through the Poconos instead, and then down I-81 in VA when going to Florida.

The KOA in Florence, SC is an easy on/easy off from 95. Same for the Savannah South KOA. I am going to look into Dan's suggestion for the New Green Acres for us for this year, though.

There's a KOA in Smithfield, NC immediately off 95 that talks itself up as the 1/2 way point. It's a very, very bare-bones KOA, but clean and very convenient. Carolina Outlet stores are right on the other side of 95 with a lot of restaurants and such, too. And Smithfield is a fast-food mecca anyway. EZ on-off.

The New Green Acres RV park is in Walterboro, SC and Google has it at 360 miles from WDW, about 6 to 7 hours depending on traffic.

There are many large and level sites with full hookups and when we stopped on the way home in August 2008 the place was about 1/3 full. Just left the truck connected to the trailer and pulled out the next morning. Tall pine trees around to provide some shade and the kids enjoyed the pool. No real fancy amenities, but the staff were friendly and the price was nice.

I think we're assuming the OP is coming down I-95. If the OP were in WNY, they'd be coming down I-75 (or at least that's how I go). Where are you disembarking from, and what route are you taking?

We actually live in New Jersey Exit 9 :thumbsup2 Do we need to make reservations at the above mentioned campgrounds or can we just pull in ?
