We've never been at this time of the year before and I'd love everyone's thoughts on places to have a traditional Christmas dinner. On or off site but preferably not in a park. Please feel free to regale me with any experiences you've had. :thumbsup2

hello
we have never been at xmas either but we booked with o'hanas for xmas meal, only because its had good reviews.

I think you will struggle to find what we would call a traditional Christmas dinner (turkey and all the trimmings). The closest would be Libertry Tree Tavern in MK. It's worth noting that MK on Christmas Day will be extremely busy and will probalby close it's doors fairly early in the day when it reaches capacity.

Last December we ate dinner at Le Cellier, Canada Showcase, Epcot. We sayed at the Dolphin so it was easy to walk into Epcot first thing Christmas morning. We didn't find it too busy until later on in the day.

We did Cape May Cafe for dinner a couple of years ago and it was fabulous, they laid on a Turkey that night and there was just so much food.

We also took our own Xmas crackers with us and put on our hats but everyone else seemed so miserable, of course we had decided not to do the parks that day and our server told us everyone was miserable because they had been in line for 2 hours or more for every ride :rotfl:

We had a grand time though and gave the server who was carving the turkey a hat from a cracker too, what a blast!!

Of course most Americans don't know about our cracker tradition so thought we were all balmy :teeth:

:rotfl: at the crackers. Although I think I'll do that too - great idea. Thanks for the info everyone.

If you look at Deb Wills http://allearsnet.com/ site it will give you a list of restaurants that have traditional Christmas fare. For Christmas Dinner this year we have booked the California Grill in the Contemporary and they are doing their normal menu plus traditional roast.

We ate at the Wilderness Lodge one Christmas and that was great to.

Thanks for the tip on the crackers Sam, we might take a couple :thumbsup2

We are having our Christmas Dinner at Chef Mickeys as we figured the parks might be too manic

I don't think you are allowed to take crackers on the plane as they contain (allbeit) a small explosive.

I read a thread along these lines prior to last Christmas. I'm sure those with greater knowledge will be along shortly to confirm this (or tell me I'm wrong!)

You can have them as checked luggage and not in hand luggage...

At least you COULD! Will double check...

No, Americans don't SEEM to have Christmas Crackers :(. You may be able to get them in some specialist shops, but they are not widespreadly available... :(

From last year... Will see if I can find out whether this still applies for this year (under current, increased, security regulations...)

Answer

Christmas Crackers:
Each passenger is allowed a maximum of two standard-size boxes of Christmas crackers.

British Airways Dangerous Goods department prefers that the crackers are packed in your checked hold baggage, but will allow them in your hand baggage if necessary.

The crackers must be made by a reputable company and be in the manufacturers original packaging.

The crackers must be for personal use only and not for commercial use.
No homemade crackers or kits are allowed on board the aircraft.

Note: Any Christmas crackers taken on board aircraft must not be used during the flight.

All items carried on board an aircraft must be made available for all security checks.

Party poppers:
Party Poppers are not allowed in hand baggage or checked hold baggage on any British Airways aircraft.

Think that it would be VERY dodgy to take crackers in hand baggage, it might still be ok in checked baggage. It might be something that you would need to check with individual airlines (i.e. Virgin if flying Virgin...).

We have booked Citricos Restaurant at the Grand Floridian for xmas evening. We don't really want to go into the Magic Kingdom as we feel it will be too busy and not enjoyable with 4 kids between our 2 families.

We have timed it so that we should be finished in plenty of time to watch the MK fireworks from the GF "beach" area.

That sounds good. No we don't want to go to any of the parks that day either.
I think it'll be a case of a resort restaurant or I'm cooking at the villa. I'd like to dine out on Christmas day but I don't mind cooking either.

Would go out ...
- firstly less work for you and all the family
- secondly trying to cook something you cook at home in the US tends to be difficult (finding all the ingredients, using some wacky US cooker...). Things just NEVER turn out the same... which could make things a bit stressful.

I produced a 3 course meal in DVC Grand Villa in May for 7 people and it worked out just fine - I managed to get all the ingredients I needed at Publix and really enjoyed cooking for my U.S. friends - it was fun and I personally recommend it, if you wanted to cook that is.

Yup we had no problem with taking crackers in the checked baggage although I do believe that there is a shop in Celebration that sells them :)

try the Peabody. if the thanksgving meal is anything to go by then Christmas will be spectacular!!

We have booked Boma's for christmas day. Thought that we would go into the MK for EMH and probably stay until lunch time. Dd is 14 now so we would save presents for the afternoon.

Yeah I'd looked into the Peabody but they didn't have anything on their website.
Did you go to Dux or the Grill?

No, it is either too early or a lot of places don't think to update their websites - you will probably need to email/phone.

My other thought would be the Ritz Carlton - I bet they do something nice for Christmas.... probably quite pricey though.
