Best painless "stretching things" budget tips?

I'd like the starbucks drinks recipe also, please. I love coffee drinks. Thanks.

A couple weekends ago, I was at someone's house and they offered me an iced coffee. She used ice, cold coffee, and flavored creamer. Maybe a little milk? I plan on trying this instead of pouring the rest of the pot down the drain.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet.
One thing I use to save $$ is a calendar. I write our dinners on a calendar a month at a time: sometimes longer.
I was finding that we were in a rut eating the same thing every week. This makes me think, plan and be creative. When it is time to grocery shop, I go thru the pantry & freezer and check off what I already have. Anything not marked off goes on my shopping list. I have found that I am using things up more in my freezer and pantry and not constantly buying duplicates. I am throwing less away due to expiration dates. As a busy working mom, this also eliminates that 5:00 panic: "What's for dinner?"

We shop 2-3 times per week at Safeway and they have really started getting aggressive about dairy, meat and bread clearance markdowns. Since we're a fmaily of four, we can go through stuff quickly and we save a ton. For example:

On the last couple of days before the "sell-by" date they mark down the hot dogs, deli meats (prepackaged), bacon and such at least 50%. Many times this is 50% off the sale price. Last week, I got 4 lbs of bacon for $1.25 each, Oscar Mayer beef hot dogs for $1, and Smithfield Cheddar sausages for $0.50 each (They had a coupon for them over in the beer aisle).

I then got pork country ribs for $0.75/lb for a big 5lb pack and a package of stew meat for $1.25/lb. We threw everything in the freezer and will use it over the next week or two.

In the Dairy area, we got Dannon yogurts for 0.20 each (only bought a few - I'll be back in a few days and they'll have something else). I picked up a huge block of Tillamook sharp cheddar for $2 (Heellooo! it's cheese- I don't care what the date is. If it's not moldy, it's still cheese!) Then I picked up a loaf of day old french bread that became toasted garlic bread (for $0.50).

Plus, I do collect some coupons. Many times, that clearanced stuff becomes free!

We have reduced our grocery bill from about $500/month to $300/month for our family of four. Instead of planning our meals ahead of shopping, we plan our meals around our shopping. We have found we've eaten a LOT better for less money.

This is a bit off topic, but I thought I would share. My mom has tons of mosquitoes where she is (northern FL). Instead of bug spray she sticks dryer sheets in her pockets when does her gardening. One in each pocket and that's it! She uses them a few times each, until she notices the scent is gone. For a few cents and no spray on her body (especially good for us sensitive types) she is completely bite free! And she doesn't have to spend more money on bug spray.

As for coupons, when you have a buy one get one free sale, make sure to use 2 coupons if you have them! They'll take both - it's like double coupon day :thumbsup2

I've used this tip before but I actually rub the dryer sheets on my body. I've found it works the best with Bounce sheets for some reason.

Are there any repeats during the month or do ou have 30 different dinners?

There are repeats. We have pizza every Sunday with the inlaws.

Other than that, I try to not serve the exact same meal twice in a month. Family favorites average every 4-6 weeks.
If we have steak, baked potatoes and broccoli on Saturday, on Tuesday we might have steak with rice and peas or maybe fajitas.
If I make a crockpot of chili, on a later date(or next month) it will say "Chili (in freezer)."
If I know I am going to have leftovers that won't freeze and aren't brownbag friendly, I will have a leftover night. Literally the date will say "Leftovers." I might heat up a vegetable or cut up some fruit to have with the leftovers if needed.
I am flexible. My calendar is written in pencil. If I get to the store and something inspires me that is on sale, I get it. I either stick it in my freezer and add it to my calendar for a later date or fix it in place of something else.

Has this completely cut out the last minute trip to the store for the family style 8pc chicken dinner? Of course not. That would mean a boring life with no surprises. But it has helped. That's all I ask for. And last week that dinner was on sale!:woohoo:

Another thing to do instead of pouring the excess down the drain is to freeze it into ice cubes. Then, if you make iced coffee, the ice won't dilute the coffee when you use the coffee ice cubes!

Great idea! I will have to dig up some trays!

This is not a new idea but it might help some. A great hamburger substitute is Textured Vegetable Protein, also known as TVP. It's made from soya flour. It has no cholesterol and is an excellent source of fiber and of course protein. I buy mine at a bulk food store but of course a health food store would likely carry it too. Just pour a cup of boiling water over a scant cup of TVP, let it sit for about 10 minutes and use in your favourite casserole, stew etc. It looks just like 1 pound of browned hamburger and if you don't tell your family or anyone at the pot luck dinner, they would never guess. I've had friends insist there was hamburger in the casserole I brought. Of course you must let your vegetarian friends at the pot luck know, to give them more options. It's a lot cheaper than hamburger, and good for you too.

I always pour out too much fabric softener into the cap. It's a big bottle and I think I just can't control the pour that well. I used to just dump it into the washer, but since subscribing to this thread, I've been pouring the extra back into the bottle and using less than the measured amount. I add a bit of water to make it "feel" like I've added the full amount.

Laundry is still soft and smells nice, plus I'm saving softener and money.

My sister uses those "softener balls" and now I want to try them, mainly because we all use comforters on our beds. I thought the balls would be good to fluff them up after washing. Any reviews?

Hi everyone....great tips, I am only on page 26 but I thought I'd put in my tips that I haven't seen so far.

As a self proclaimed germaphobe, I send homemade antibacterial wipes in my kids lunchboxes to use at school. We go through quite abit of hand sanitizer so I buy the industrial size at walmart for about $5. I buy the cheapest tub of wipes I can find and when the handsanitizer won't pump out anymore I add a little hot water to it and dump into a tub of wipes. Smush and sqeeze around a little and maybe add a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol (just so everything is nice and saturated). Wowla:lmao: antibacterial wipes. Put a couple in a baggie and into the lunchbox to use before snack and lunch @school. They are told to return the baggy(not the used wipes) back to lunchbox to reuse.

Another tip is buying ketchup and mustard in bulk and refilling containers. We go through alot of that and it really is cheaper to save ketchup/mustard bottles to refill.

I cut my dd12 stridex pads in half and return them to the container.

I use my crockpot ALOT and cook meals/bake from scratch alot of the time!

dh is a deer hunter, so we have a freezer chest full of venison that lasts all year. We don't buy beef, we use ground venison. Totally get used to it after awhile and prefer it over beef. AND HEALTHIER TOO!

Pure lemon oil to clean wood furniture. Only need few tiny drops and smells good. $2 bottle lasts over a year.

Still loving this thread - thanks, everyone for keeping it going with such great info!

One thing I did this week that thrilled the socks off me - kind of inspired by the recent post about using multiple coupons on BOGO things (wow!) - was that I used three coupons on a three-pack of toothpaste at BJs! Result - virtually free toothpaste! (I think it ended up being 49 cents for the three pack.)

They let you use extra coupons there for the larger sized/multiple item packs of things. We love BJs - hate Costco...no longer a member there. They don't take ANY coupons!

Love the homemade Purell wipes idea!

I use the balls and like them alot! I don't use fabric softener anymore. I use vinegar instead of softener (the smell dissipates when the clothes are dry, I swear!!) and the dryer balls for when I actually use the dryer (I try to line dry as much as possible). If you want them only for your comforter, then I wouldn't recommend them because they tend to get wrapped up in the comforter. If you want to get them for smaller pieces (think normal loads of clothing) then they work well. I hope that made sense:confused3.

My mom always used new tennis balls or new cheapo tennis sneakers for comforters.
I'm lazy; I take mine to the cleaners. It's king size and wouldn't fit anyway.

Do you have any easy and inexpensive recipes for cooking venison in a crockpot? We were just given some venison, and I have no idea how to cook it! Thanks!
