Hey all! We're contemplating a trip and have to go during school breaks since DH is a teacher. The four of us (DD will be 5 and DS almost 2) are trying to decide if NYE or spring break would be better. Our spring break doesn't usually coincide with Easter (usually!). We're fairly good when it comes to making rope drop and park hopping to avoid the crowds as much as possible. So what do you all think would be the best/worst and why? Or is it a wash? TIA!!

I think it depends on what you value most? The cost, the experience, the crowd (which usually coincides with cost), and weather.

I value the price the most, so I often go in aug when I have free time and the cost is relatively cheap. I would choose spring break because of the weather, the price (which is got to be cheaper than NYE) and I would imagine would be less crowded than NYE.

You also might be interested in the special events that go on that day, and that would be a great way to spend the new years, as well. But generally, it will probably be more expensive, more crowded, and the weather may not be as warm as you would like.

The week between Christmas and New Years is the most crowded week of the year. So crowded the Magic Kingdom will reach some phase of capacity based closure every day of the week. On New Years Eve itself, the crowds are absolutely absurd. I've seen guests have to wait over 2 hours just to buy a hamburger. I'd avoid that time at all costs.

Spring Break should definitely be less crowded, especially if you are avoiding Easter itself.

I'd choose Spring Break if crowds are the top priority. I think New Year's is a 10/10 on the crowd scale.

I would also choose Spring Break especially if it doesn't coincide with immediately before or after Easter. We've been twice during Spring Break the week before Easter and once during NYE week. Much less crowded in the Spring.

If you like Christmas decor, then NYE has that advantage. But crowd-wise, much worse.

Totally agree!! I have been there during both time frames, AVOID NYE.
I enjoyed the fireworks but the crowds were terrible. Never, ever again.

Not everyone takes their spring break at the same time. But everyone celebrates NYE at the same time.

My husband is also a teacher, so we have to follow the school schedule, too. REad my lips: DO NOT GO FOR NYE!!! It was the worst experience I've ever had at Disney. Maybe if you were able to stay for a really long trip, or even for a handful of days after NYE it would be worth it, but seriously, it sucked. The only good thing I remember for that trip was the MK did a NYE celebration on the 30th to help thin the crowds for the following day. It was a blast and very few people were there, but the trip as a whole was less than magical.

Since his Spring Break doesn't like up with Easter, you should be fine. And, even if it did, it would still be 100X better than NYE. I know crowd calendars will show 7-9 for most Spring Breaks weeks, but a 10 around NYE is more like a 15. Parks were at capacity at 11 am.

Similar question since we won't be able to pull our three children from school and my husband would be miserable in the mid-summer....
-Spring Break (usually early March) or Thanksgiving week or possibly June

I have been to WDW many times during "peak season", Easter, Thanksgiving...but there is one week that puts the fear of God in me and don't think I could ever vacation that week....and that's the week between Christmas and NY's. :rotfl: So obviously I pick spring break. :)

That said, my friend took their family vacation for 2 weeks this past Christmas and Ny's and had a great time. They just knew going in that they wouldn't be able to get as much done as other times.

Thank you all for your suggestions! As nice as it would be to see Disney around the holidays again, I don't think it's worth my sanity ;) Plus we've never been in the spring so this should be fun! Thanks again :)
