Hey folks, need some advice on which lens would be sufficient to cover a wedding. First of all,the couple has hired a professional wedding photographer :thumbsup2, my wife thinks this would be a good opportunity for me to take some photos of her friend (Bride). My equipment is based on the 4/3rd system. I shoot with an Olympus E-5. My lenses : 70-200mm 2.0 - 24-120mm 2.8 - 100-400mm 2.8 and a 85mm 1.4 prime lens. I was thinking of utilizing the 70-200, since it covers a wide range or should I consider the use of multiple lenses & which? Thanks for any advice.

First... make sure it's OK with the professional photographer that you get in there and take pictures. Some are particular and have clauses in their contracts. I've met some that are so uptight they insist that no one else be allowed to use a camera at all during the wedding.

I'm not real up on the 4/3 system so I'm not much help on lenses for that. A standard for during the wedding with an APS-C or full frame DLSR is a 24-70 or 24-105. But a lot depends on the size of the venue and how far you are from the altar.

You definitely want the 35-100 f/2. That may be one of the best Olympus lenses made.

.

How does anyone enforce that in today's day and age, when people are just lifting their phones to take pictures? I just can't imagine wedding guests being "disciplined" for taking pictures from their seats.... and I assume you mean just the wedding ceremony? Because I really can't imagine telling guests at a wedding that they can't take pictures at the party.

In response to havoc, there are so many Uncle Bobs out there and lots of Pros post photos of ruined shots from iPads and phones being held up at the wrong momen ruining the first kis shot to Uncle Bob running on the dance floor and blinding the Bride and her father with his pop up flash. Hell I'm sure I've pissed plenty of people off myself in the past.

The point is that u are there to enjoy the wedding, the couple probably paid a lot of money to hahve that photographer there...

Heres another fun article....

I have always found that the best lens in the one mounted on the paid professional's camera! I brought my camera only once to a wedding at the request of the bride's mother (DW's cousin) and I will never do it again. I had serious reservations and expressed such to the DW and her cousin. I cleared everything with the paid pro and didn't enjoy myself for fear of screwing up the pro's gig. I wandered off several times just to get away and take some photos of the sun setting over the lake and some surrounding landscapes. It just wasn't fun!!
