Hello everyone! Long story short, after several recent nightmare situations with flying involving canceled flights, we've decided to drive from the Chicago burbs to WDW this year. We recently did an emergency 12 hour drive, so we know we're good with long stretches. However, we'd still like to break it up into 2 days since there's only two of us.

We plan to start the trek on NYE and reach WDW on Jan 1, so I am wondering if anyone has good recommendations on a value or moderately priced hotel in GA that won't be too crazy during the holiday (safe, clean, close to highway, etc.) I've read numerous other Chicago->Orlando threads recommending aiming for south of Atlanta, which I sounds reasonable to us. Any ideas?

Getting below Atlanta isn't essential since you'll encounter little traffic on New Years Day. In fact, it might be slightly better to stay north of Atlanta. I'm not sure if there will be much evening rush hour traffic (technically, it's not a holiday). But there could be some. Most importantly, the Peach Bowl is New Years Eve afternoon at the Georgia Dome. You'll probably get traffic there. And lodging around the Atlanta area will be at a premium.

Dalton is about an hour north of Atlanta. 10 hours south of Chicago and eight hours north of the Mouse. It has all the major chains.

I wouldn't blame you if you try to get through Atlanta. However, I'd try to get as far as Macon if you do. You don't want to pay inflated, Peach Bowl rates.

In any event, this is one night to make reservations. Many party-goers will stay at a motel, so they don't need to drive home.

Not sure when your leaving the chi town area, but it takes about 12 hours to get to Atlanta, plus remember they are an hour ahead. I would try to be off the highways before it gets to late. No way I would want to deal with drunk drivers and tons of police on the roads. I'm sure hotels will be a bit pricey that night also so be prepared. Also as a side not make sure you take the I 57 route i65 is closed north of Indy due to a sinking bridge. Can you leave on the 30th, so you can be in Disney for NYE?

Safe travels
