Hi-
We are leaving on our first ever RV trip soon and will be hitting lots of the US and Canada. I am wondering which grocery stores have the best prices in other areas.
I live in the South and Publix has the best sale prices, and Kroger has better prices in general.
I have no idea about other areas. Also can you tell me if your store doubles/triples coupons?
Thanks

Hands down, Wegmans. I think it it different regionally but around here they double coupons up to a dollar.

Wegmans around here used to do true doubles up to 99 cent but I haven't had any good coupons lately to verify this. However, many people around houere (NJ) believe that Wegmans is more expensive than other places.

If you are looking solely into best price- Bottom Dollar Food consistently has the lowest prices on items. But it is a small store-like a nice Aldi. It has Aldi like features too- like bag
your own groceries and box aisles
I haven't seen triple coupon offers in about 10 years.

For our family, Meijer has the best deals when buying coupon items or loss leaders..... I try to do that as much as possible because if I have a bunch of non-sale items it's off to Wal-Mart for me and I hate shopping at Wal-Mart.

Oh and Kroger, Meijer, and Marsh all double q's here but Marsh is expensive.

Our main ones are Kroger, Meijer, Cubfood and Walmart.
Kroger is the only one I will go to. Fresher produce, clean store and the prices are inline with the others.

I am a big fan of Meijer. I hate Walmart and won't shop there. I do like Dominicks and Jewel in my area, but Meijer usually has the best prices (but no doubling of coupons here).

I don't have anything new to add. I just wanted to say, it sounds like a wonderful trip!!! I've been wanting to do something like that for years. I hope to do it one day.

If you don't mind my asking, what is the general itinerary of your trip? West Coast, Middle, or East Coast? What parts of Canada are you headed? I'm sure it will be fabulous! I hope you guys have a blast!

Oh, something fun to do for a keepsake a friend shared with me, is to take a picture of yourselves near the state signs. My friend had some from almost all 50 states. It was pretty neat to see! :)

Depends. BJ's or Costco for some things. Publix is great sometimes on the buy 1 get 1. Super Target is probably our most popular for general shopping.

I still miss Kroger, though.

I'm a Wegmans girl too. Wegmans doubles any coupon that's under $.99. I don't know that they are the cheapest store in town, but they definitely have the best quality and the customer service can't be beat!

Walmart. Everywhere else would costs us $75 more on our weekly grocery shopping. Grocery stores are very expensive where I am.

St. Louis is what I consider very "under-groceried" -- especially since Kroger left the area in 1986 and Loblaws' sole U.S. operation (National Markets) ceased to exist in the 90's.

With that said, you have the following "major players":

Schnucks - the 800-pound gorilla that bulked-up after Kroger's departure (and they bought/merged with National in 1995, and got a whole lot bigger -- which raised many eyebrows in the Federal Trade Commission). Locations nearly everywhere in/around St. Louis, as well as other midwest states.

Shop n' Save - the local brand for SuperValu (Jewel-Osco, Acme, and others) - 42 locations in the metro area.

Dierbergs - the smallest of the three -- generally considered more "upscale" and in format/layout/pricetag compares to stores such as Publix and Wegmans. - 23 locations in the metro area.

In addition to those three, Walmart has been emerging over the past few years by rebuilding their longtime general merchandise stores into supercenters, and Target completed a remodeling "blitz" last year which added small fresh grocery sections to all of their local stores (both WM and Target have been part of the St. Louis retail landscape since the late 60's/early 70's).

Interestingly-enough, none of the "locals" have club card promotions like their counterparts in other regions of the U.S.

Aldi is also popping-up in certain neighborhoods, albeit, in much smaller numbers than the rest of the pack...

Caveat: I am speaking only of those stores the general public can shop at (no warehouse clubs or military commissaries, both of which are available in the area)

Wegmans will generally be cheaper, they work hard to be that way. Don't forget the Consistant Low Price program, which basically means that's the normal price, not a sale price that will go away in a week. They also have the seasonal CLP program where for the whole season, the top selling 40 or so products go on a price freeze. Maybe that stuff means more to a regular shopper than a one time shopper but still worth a look depending on which location we're talking about.

I shop at the commissary on base mostly. But if I had to shop off base it would be at Fred Meyers and Costco.
