I use MDE and Lines for different features. If you use both, you'll realize very quickly how Disney uses their times for crowd manipulation.

I don't doubt that Disney can do that. I'm just curious as to why they would. If the goal is to steer people away from busier rides, well, the long wait times for those rides would be the deterrent, wouldn't it? Unless they are exaggerating long waits to list them as even longer.

Yes. If a ride really has a 20 minute wait time, but they show it as maybe 40 minutes, a certain number of people will go to other rides that are shown to be maybe 15 minutes. But with Lines, you would know that the first ride is really not 40 minutes, but rather 20, and go to that one to ride.

Lines isn't free, but it's worth the price for a Touring plans subscription-- it has so many features outside of the awesome app! My biggest issue with MdE is that they do not post wait times for characters-- Lines does. And they also have a line with each time that says "reported," which aligns with the MDE time-- so it's like you're checking both posted times, the official Disney one and the Lines user-reported version.

OK, but I'm still hazy on this. Why would it benefit Disney to steer people away from a ride with a 20-minute wait time to one with a 15-minute wait? Or even less than that? Sure, it's probably better to get people to avoid a 60-minute line, but that hardly needs to be exaggerated.

Unless there's something else I'm missing here.

Their goal is to spread the loads among all rides and attractions. A certain number of rides/attractions are considered highly desirable by many guests and tend to have longer lines than others. And others less. By showing those more desirable rides/attractions with inflated wait times, a certain number of guests will decide to not wait that long and head on to something else, thereby spreading the loads.
