Its time for me to start doing the bedtime story thing with my baby, she is old enough now. And all I can think of is Dr. Suess. Got any good recommendations for bedtime story books? Around the 4-6 year old range, thanks.

We read just about everything. She typically choose the book. My only rule was it had to be short enough to finish, without spending half the night reading.

Just reading is important.

Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. I'm always amazed how many kids today have never heard of Mother Goose. And yay, for Dr. Suess! He was always a favorite in our house!

Giraffes Don't Dance, Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, The Kissing Hand, Any book by Kevin Henkes.

Oh, for short story, the Mercer Mayer books are always good. As well as Berenstain Bears.

Good night moon
Love you forever (sob fest)
Also, my mom read Winken, Blinkyn, and Nod to me and at 50 I still remember.

I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be.:cutie:
I had it memorized and DS is now 21 :lmao:

How old is she? I ask since you said baby. My kids loved all the Sandra Boynton books as toddlers/preschools. My son still likes them at 4.5yo.

My daughter started asking us to read Magic Treehouse books right around her 5th birthday so we'd read 1-2 chapters a night and finish each book in about 7-10 days.

I was going to say anything by Robert Munsch...can't read Love You Forever because it make me cry...my favs of his are Paperbag Princess & Mortimer's Snowsuit. They'll all great.

When I read to my "babies" it was simple things. They loved all of the Spot books as well as the Carl books. Good Night Moon was also a favorite. Pat the Bunny.

Anything by Martin Waddell, but especially 'Can't you Sleep Little Bear?' , 'Let's Go Home, Little Bear', 'Sam Vole and His Brothers' and 'Farmer Duck'. I just loved reading his books to my son, they are some of my fondest memories.

As a baby/toddler DD liked the same few books over and over. Her favorites were Good Night Moon and Guess How Much I Love You.

In early elementary school she loved Toys Go Out. It's a chapter book but each chapter is a story on its own. It's a great book - DH and I really enjoyed it.

Never Tease a Weasel
There's an Animal Strike at the Zoo
Goodnight Moon
Any and all by Mo Willems
Good Night Gorilla
The Man Who Walked Between the Towers
Thunder Cake
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Stellaluna
Duck on a Bike
Guess How Much I Love You
All the Curious George books
Llama Llama Red Pajama
Library Lion
A Bad Case of Stripes

Read her anything. I shied away from Dr. Seuss and Disney stories but that was just me. Love Dr. Seuss, so it is nothing personal, I just went with other stuff. :)

There are great children's books out there--do not just stick to bedtime themes. I'd let DD pick 3 and we'd read every night (and at naptime too). I adore children's books and have a great collection. DD is 17 and we still talk about some of them when reminded from time to time.
Enjoy your quiet time with her. Time goes by really fast and those times are precious!

The growing tree, where the wild things are and when you give a mouse a cookie were favorites when our son was a bit smaller that he still occasionally wants to hear at 6 1/2.

She is 4.

Thanks everybody for all the great suggestions, writing all these down.
