Most Sears stores now carry Land's End, so it is easier to see the products in person and fit them to your child. My only advice is to make sure the backpack itself is very lightweight, because adding all the other items in can total a few pounds. My DD6 was 35 pounds in Kindergarten, and we had to find a pack that didn't weigh her down.
As we are leaving in 3 days for DW I have not done much supply shopping. I guess it gives me something to look forward do after we get home and my post-Disney depression sets in!
My DS5 picked out a themed backpack for about $13 at Target. He is so excited! It's one of the best parts of starting school, in his opinion.
My DD has always enjoyed picking out a new backpack every year. Even though her backpacks last from year to year, her tastes change, the styles change and it's just part of the fun.
As they get older and need sturdier backpacks, we'll invest in something that will stand up to heavy loads. Until then, I'll let them pick something out every year. I like that I can remember each of DD9's backpacks so far....she's gone from Princesses to Puppies to Butterflies and now has a crazy purple hippy looking bag.
My dd is now going into first and will again be using the Lands End Jr. backpack we bought her for kinder. Awesome backpack. It has a pocket on the side for a drink bottle. A friend recommended that for kinder kids get a backpack that will hold what they need but not any bigger. For us that means their folder that their work comes home in and their lunchbox. It all fit perfectly and was not to big and bulky for her to carry. It held up awesome and is in perfect condition for next year.
Here's another vote for the Lands End backpacks. We got one for my dd who started Pre-K this year. The bag itself is pretty lightweight. It's plenty big enough for her folder she carries home and she'll be able to use it next year for Kindergarten.

Maybe girls are nicer to these backpacks, but my son destroyed his, LOL. I bought him the Lands End Junior last year for Kindergarten. Had it monogrammed and everything and assumed it was last through 1st grade at least. It barely made it through Kindergarten. The most obvious problem is that the netting on the water bottle pockets on the side is totally shredded. Also, the edges of the backpack straps are frayed and some holes and the straps don't stay tightened anymore. I was pretty disappointed in it, really. I bought a Pottery Barn Kids backpack this year. We'll see how that one holds up. The PBK junior pack does have less storage space inside than the LE Jr. I'm not sure how we're going to handle snow pants, etc. The bigger packs don't fit on him at all though.
