I usually walk for about an hour a day on paved roads with some hills. I feel like something always winds up hurting, today i have a shin splint on my right side. I have a pair of sketchers and I double up on cushioned shocks. I get new sneakers about every 6 months. Anyone have athletic shoe or pain preventative suggestions?

My daughter is an athlete who does almost daily hard core 2-3 hour workouts. She swears by Asics shoes - the higher end models. She's never had any pain. But then she's only 14 so there is that . . . .

The preferred shoe when I was a city letter carrier (so walking all day) was the Reeboks DMX line.

Another vote for Asics. You may have to try several different styles - they don't all fit the same, but once you find the right one, you'll know -- it's like walking on cotton.

I'm also a fan of (any) Skechers with memory foam. I bought a brand new pair less than a week before my most recent WDW trip and they were great! No shin splints! (Which I almost always get when at WDW)

The best shoe is going to depend on your body type, stride, etc. After some knee issues, I had a physical therapist make some recommendations as to what type of support I needed and went to a running store to get fitted with shoes that met those recommendations. My walking shoes are Asics, but not a style you an find in a regular store. They also had a pair of Brooks that would have worked.

I need the motion control of certain higher-numbered styles of New Balance. I do a lot of walking for exercise and need to replace my shoes more often than six months. I also wear cushioned, moisture-wicking New Balance socks almost exclusively now. When choosing a new style of shoe, I go into a New Balance store for a professional fitting. I may purchase additional pairs on Amazon.

Love my Brooks! i would go into one of those local athletic shoe places where they fit you for right shoe. That is what I did before I started training for 5k. Never heard of Brooks before that lol

Hmmm....I am checking out Brooks. Always on the hunt for good shoes. :thumbsup2

I see a pedorthist @ Brown shoe and she fits my feet free of charge. I wear New Balance at the moment.

I wear Asics to walk/run, but my suggestion is to go to a good running store and get a pair that suits your feet. The store I go to asks several questions, looks at how the tread on your current shoes is worn, watches you walk, then measures your foot and makes a recommendation. They also allow customers to go outside and walk/run in the shoes and see how they feel.

Every person needs a different type of shoe. There is no one best fit.

Go to a respected running shoe store in your area and ask for a person to fit your feet to a shoe. They will watch you walk and jog, measure your foot, ask about activities and medical, then fit you.

I agree. Also, this is not when I'd try and find a good deal. Athletic shoes are expensive but worth the cost when you find one that fits.

Brooks "Ghost". I can't say enough about them. Fantastic support and very comfortable. Pay the price, that is my biggest advice. Don't go cheap. Your feet will love you for it.

I had bad plantar fasciitis some years ago, took me a long while to get rid of it. This was part of a general period of aches and pains due to autoimmune stuff. Anyway, when I started walking on my treadmill regularly I started getting it again even though I stretched etc. So I started wearing a pair of rocker bottom Rykas I had on the theory they would keep me from striking heel first. I don't know if it would work for everyone, but it worked for me. For everyday walking/touring I wear the lightest weight shoes I can find.
