This year the girls and I are going to dress up and watch the goings on...get Chinesse food(which I have to order soon) and have a blast. DH will snore through it I refuse to spend another New Years alone
We usually don't have any thing special for New Year's eve, but every New Year's day, we have a good old fashioned Irish boil -- ham, potatoes and cabbage. It's kind of like a superstition that if you have food cooking in a pot on New Year's day, you'll have food in the kitchen all year long. It's not a superstition for us, but a tradition. We do have snacks like celery and cream cheese, chips and dip, some chocolates etc. for New Year's eve. I don't know why though.
Fish sounds good EROS! I love red snapper, mahi, tuna, shrimp, crab, lobster, salmon, swordfish. I think I'll look for something to cook!
We've never eaten anything specific on NYE. Southeners are supposed to eat black eyed peas on New Year's Day, but we usually don't. I don't like them, and DH doesn't like them enough to eat a pot all by himself.
they always requested Jeno's Pizza Rolls for New Year's Eve. We rarely had them at any other time of the year, unless they were on sale, and they loved them so that was always their one favorite munchie for New Year's.
No shrimp here...yuk!
We usually do picky stuff like mozzarella sticks, meat balls, chili & nachos, potatoe skins, etc...if we have company. If not, probably just a take out meal.
We usually have pizza as the kids have friends over for sleepovers. But this year, DH wants to have shrimp (ewwww.........), so we'll probably have that and pizza.
BTW, DD got me hooked on Hawaiian pizza - ham, pineapple and cheese - very, very yummy!
I'll be having pork roast and sauerkraut for New Year's Day (tradition), although I'll personally only eat the pork!
Same as glo, Chinese with the kids!!! Dh has to work that night, so it is just Myself and the kids...the kids decided they wanted Chinese food, so that it what it will be!
Our whole family plays board games while we snack and await the new year. This year's snacks will be cheese dip, layered taco dip, snickerdoodles, gingerbread, and fresh vegetables. With all those goodies, we'll probably just fix a sandwich for our evening meal or warm up leftovers for anyone interested.
New Years Day I make a pot of Hoppin' John (with black-eyed peas, rice & bacon) and a pan of cornbread. We always have black-eyed peas because that will make you have a lucky year. When I was a girl, my mother always boiled and wash coins and when they were clean she would add them to a pot of cooked black-eyed peas. The more money you got the luckier your year would be, and you got to keep the money. It was fun, but you had to be careful that you didn't eat the coins. Now we just say that every bean gives you another lucky day.
We also put out what is left of the snacks from the night before during the football games. This year, DD is preparing to get braces, so we are fixing carmel apple dip for her on the first. She won't get sticky foods like that for the next 18 months.
We don't have a regular menu for New Year's Eve, we always do a variety of finger foods though. The only regular thing is pancit, it is a philipino food (long rice noodles with veggies) and for New Year's it signifies long life. We will probably also have lumpia (spring rolls), shrimp cocktail, scallops wrapped in bacon, pigs in the blanket, veggies and dip, salsa and chips and ?????? (I haven't finished planning yet!)
Traditionally, we've always had lobster. However, the last few years my kids (DS12, DD14) have wanted sushi. DH and I love sushi too so we decided this year will be sushi for an appetizer and lobster for dinner!
We usually do the finger food thing too, this year(so far) it is taco dip, meatballs, reuban dip, a cheeseball, pickle roll ups and turkey roll ups. I am sure some more things will be added to that list ! I don't prepare a regular meal we just snack!!
