Benefits for Referrals?

So we referred some family friends to DVC at WDW and got a form letter thank you note from our sales guy. It was nice and all -- but at our other timeshare, we get a small credit to our annual dues if someone visits and a larger credit if they actually buy.

Has Disney ever done that before? Did I miss an opportunity? Figured people on this board would know the answer...

Last year my referral source got a $200 gift card. I have only seen a $25 gift for soemone doing the phone tour. Referral incentives were all the rage the first half of last year.

Our friends attended a presentation but did not buy. I only got a thank you letter (no $25 gift card). My understanding is that you'd get $200 if they purchased.

It depends on your state as well. In some states, DVC referral bonuses are not permitted (Texas is one, so you are not eligible, OP). I don't know what the deal is with your other timeshare since you got one, but Texas is listed right on the DVC site as one of the states not allowed to receive referral incentives.

You can use the money towards your dues, or get a gift card, and I think there might be 1-2 other options as well.

You are correct in that Disney only offers an incentive for the referral if the person actually buys. There are 5 levels--$200, $350, $500, $750, and $1000. Once you receive at least $1000 in referrals, they report it to the IRS and it has to be claimed as misc. income. You can take the bonus in a Disney Gift Card, credit toward dues, Prepaid Visa, or toward add on purchase.

That's the way that it is in Texas. The limit per State statute is $50. Disney won't adjust their program to pay less and Texas won't change the statute.

I believe it is anything over $ 600 in referrals you get a 1099 as miscellaneous income that has to be reported.

Texas doesn't get referrals unfortunately.

I think you should refer your friends and family to The Timeshare Store, Inc.® You can show them how much money they will save and tell them to then give you half of that money.

You're in the same boat we are, nothing for the member who lives in Texas and gives a referral. The state law prohibits anyone other than a realtor from receiving compensation on a real estate sale and they consider timeshares to be real estate.

Our guide said that knows lots of DVC members from Texas and it's a real shame that that cannot receive the gift card for a referral. His referrals would probably increase as well.

If the family you refer buys, you will get a thank you letter, just no gift card.

Yes, Minnesota is one of those states as well. I've gotten several of those nice "thanks but sorry" letters.

You only get a thank you card if you stay in the UK.
