We sail on points sometimes and pay cash sometimes and they always know we are there. We are invited to the member gathering, get the magnet on the door, gifts (lanyards, hats etc.) and phone calls to stop by the desk for other items.

I'm curious too. We became members in Nov 2010 but we used our trusty AAA ta to book our dream cruise for Sept as a courtesy since we would not be using her for our yearly WDW trips.
With that being said I did use my DVC memb login to retrieve my cruise ressie and book spa and excursions at 75 days. Will that be a flag for them that we are on board as members.
I do plan to let them know if it's not noted since I've heard there might be goodies for members
I don't think I would call them benefits...more like little bonuses or perks. They just know you're there somehow and they will leave a DVC magnet on your door and there's a DVC gift (usually some nice soft lanyards) and if you go to the Member event thing you can get pins, DVC baseball caps & enter a drawing to win some gifts.
