He hit a car that turned in front of him. He didn't have a helmet on. He now has a head injury. No word on the extent of his injury.

I hate that he is hurt, but he wasn't the bright boy to not wear a helmet.

I hate hearing about motorcycle accidents. My father had one when I was growing up and it was great fun to ride. But we live in a state with a helmet law and I would never think about not wearing one. My Dad's friend was in a very very very serious motorcycle accident and my Dad was the first on the scene at the time. Had he not been wearing a helmet, he would not be here today.

I can not think of any reason not to wear a helmet.

Uh oh. I know almost all of Pittsburgh is just waiting to see how he is and is probably in almost mourning.
That is such a football crazy town.

But you're right. He wasn't very bright to not be wearing a helmet.
He wears one on the field, right? Well, then why wouldn't he while riding a motorcylcle. I'd probably rather get hit by a 300 lbs man than a car going 60. :rotfl:

I wish he were wearing a helmet. I hope he'll be OK, though without a helmet I imagine that the damage could be quite terrible. :guilty:

I wasnt sure who he was so I had to look him up.. Poor guy. I just read he went through the windshield :guilty: There no Law in Pa for helmets is there?

My father got into an accident 2 weeks ago. Car pulled out in front of him and he dumped his bike. It was either that or hit the car. He had alot of road rash and is still very sore. It could of been alot worst. His bike also has 7500 woth of damage. He usually has a full face helmet on but wore a half one that day. There were alot of scratches on it.

Hubby has one also and I am also so nervous when he is on it.

The law changed to helmet optional in the last couple years. Stupidest thing this state ever did!
i am GLUED to the TV holding my breath. They're not saying anything about his condition which worries me even more. Reports say he was bleeding profusely from the head and other reports say he was up walking and talking after. He hit the windshield and landed on the other side and there are no skidmarks so it must have been really sudden. Super good thoughts and prayers to Ben, forget about football, we just want him to be ok. He'll hopefully come thru this ok and will wear a helmet in the future. Tough lesson.

It's the same way here in Florida....I have never understood how wearing a seatbelt can be law, but wearing a helmet is optional.
Hope he is ok.

I just heard about it. I am really hoping hes ok. Forget whether or not he can play football or not. But the stories of the witnesses are all saying the same thing, but every single one of them are saying that they were the ones that ran up to him and asked for his name and told him he couldn't move. According to the witness reports, there must have been like 20 people around him. I don't know. I'm just not buying that they were all the ones that went up to him. I would believe that now that they know it was Big Ben, all of a sudden, everyone was the hero. I don't know, maybe I'm completely wrong and there really was a whole crowd of people all asking at the same time if he was ok and what his name was, etc.

How very sad. Prayers said.

agnes!

Here is the Fox News story. According to this...he was conscious.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident Monday morning.

"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.
The Steelers confirmed the accident, but provided no details on his condition.

A witness told Pittsburgh TV station WTAE that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle, then hit the ground.

Roethlisberger was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Shortly after Kellen Winslow's motorcycle accident, which forced the Browns tight end to miss the entire 2005 season, Steelers head coach Bill Cowher expressed concern over his own star player's infatuation with the bikes.

"It (a pro football career) is a very small time in your life, and you've got to be very careful. You can see it documented with Kellen Winslow," Cowher said. "Not just in riding motorcycles, but where you go and who you associate with."

Cowher reportedly spoke to Roethlisberger in May of 2005 after photos surfaced in which the Steelers quarterback was posing helmetless on a motorcycle. Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers to ride without a helmet.

I just heard the news...

How horrible....I just pray he's OK. He's much too young to have to learn the hard way.

Also prayers for the driver of the other car ~ haven't heard anything about them....assuming they're OK, they must feel awful too.

espn.com said it is not a life-threatening injury, which is good. I would never ride a motorcycle. I am not slamming those who do, but it is not for me. Just the other morning there were 3 motorcycle accident stories right next to each other in the Toledo paper. One fatal (an 18 year old who had only been out of HS for 5 days), one critical and one serious. Our favorite waitress at our favorite breakfast spot told us her mom ran into the back of a car on her bike almost a month ago and is still in a coma--might not come out of it. I like Ben R.--saw him play HS ball and whip the tar out of the school where I teach!--but anyone who rides without a helmet is at least one fry short of a happy meal.

Because motorcyle riders joined together and protested the new law requiring helmets. They viewed it as a personal choice being taken from them. It's not as if they are children who are not educated on the safety of riding motorcycles and/or are incapable of making that decision themselves.

Car drivers and passengers did not do this. That is why there is a seatbelt law in all states and some states do not require motorcyle riders to wear helmets.

Oh good lord......the Pittsburgh news media is going to have FIELD day with this. It's going to be unbearable.

I do hope he is ok, but this city is OBSESSED with the Steelers so this is all anyone on the radio or tv will talk about.

I don't know who this guy is, don't care about his outcome.

But here's a good time to plug not riding motorcycles!

I don't believe the government should make them illegal or fine people for not wearing helmets. I always believe that people should be free to do as they please, even if it is stupid.

But if we could all point out to our kids how flippin dangerous these things are (helmet or no!) maybe less of them will ride them as adults.

Jumping down off my high horse now. Sorry. :)

I just don't understand why a professional athlete who makes his living with his body, would take such a chance? I mean millions millions of dollars are at stake and a pro sports career only lasts for such a short while. I guess being an athlete and at the top of your game, probably makes you feel invincible. I remember coach Bill Cower having a talk with him and telling him to give the bike a rest until he retires.Terry Bradshaw told him the same thing at training camp last year.

My thoughts and prayers are with him and I hope he's ok. To be a young, talented, sucessfull person and have the whole world in front of you is an awesome gift. I hope it doesn't end for him and he fully recovers from this. He seems to be a good guy and the world is in short supply of them lately. I'm not a person who belongs to any religion, but I'm praying for him just the same.

He guest appeared on Deal Or No Deal recently (I think it was him?)- the contestant was a big Steelers fan.

Yes, that was him Goofygirl. My poor friend. She absolutely adores him! She loves the Steelers, and got an early dismissal from school to go see the Super Bowl victory parade. Ben was at a benefit basketball game (Steelers vs. State troopers) to benefit the family of a State trooper that was killed in the line of a duty. She sat a couple rows behind him. The next day, she came in to school with pictures from the game and she got one of him (a really bad, unflattering one, may I add) that she cherished. She is an absolute wreck about it. And I know I'll get flamed for this post. But, I can honestly see her in tears right now.
