Belly Up to the Bar With Bendy and Her Friendies!!! Button Pics & New Thread Started!

I would very much like to read Boukreev's account of the expedition ... just to have another perspective. What did you think of it?

And Into the Wild has been on my radar for a while now I just haven't quite managed to get to it yet.

Mr. Boukreev had a few differences with Mr. Krakauer's version of events. Good to see both perspectives.

There's also books out there about the same expedition by Lene Gammelgaard, Beck Weathers (the guy they left for dead - his is more about what happened to him afterward), and David Breashears who was part of the IMAX film team who tried to rescue them.

Beautiful pictures, Brenda! :thumbsup2 Hope your sinuses get better soon. I'm thinking we're going to be home from school again tomorrow...:sad2: If she could just make it till lunch, then it wouldn't be another absence.

I'll have to check Rezzaz out. ;) I'm hooked on Biltmore's Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot. I've asked my local wine guy if he could get them for me by the case, but to no avail. We seem to have issues getting wines from the small vintners like Biltmore, Thomas Quady and a few other ones that I like. I'm sure its on NJ's end because we are one heck of a screwed up state. It sure would save me the annual pilgrimage though...cause once you've seen the house and estate a few times, it becomes old hat, although still gorgeous. That 12 hour drive kills me.

Rezzaz is to die for. They have an awesome wine bar and tappas! :thumbsup2 I never get tired of Biltmore. I just love Asheville, in general. We have a favorite B&B where we always stay--Bent Creek Lodge--and we always spend too much money at the galleries and restaurants downtown, but it's a blast!

I haven't eaten at Rezzaz; there are so many new places in Asheville since we lived there it makes my head spin. Most of the time when I/we visit now it's to go to a friend's for dinner or to Bele Chere. I have to say a lot of times we just go to Cornerstone on Tunnel Rd. because I can't get an gyro here anywhere! Oh, we did try a really good Italian/Greek place in the Woodfin area last summer--I can't remember the name of it. It was new then, agh, I can't remember.

We are able to get several Biltmore wines here; luckily my favorite is the plain and simple American Riesling. I'm still hoarding my bottle of Christmas wine for some reason!

We bought a bottle of Reisiling there in February as well as a new Pinot Noir they just released. That's really tasty. :goodvibes My favorite is there champagne, but then again I could drink nothing but champagne and be a happy girl!

Greetings all!

Just finished up our federal and state taxes ... would have had them done a month ago but for the blue screen of death episode we were visited with. Oh well ... at least they're done for another year.

I'm uploading pics from the Flower & Garden Festival (2007) but it's taking a long time because we lost our bulk uploader application when Jay reinstalled all our updates. I don't know why some updates "took" and others didn't but it's taking a looooooooonnnnnnng time to get those pictures taken care of. This could be problematic come October, but like any good American and Scarlett O'Hara ... I don't want to think about that now; I'll think about that tomorrow. :lmao:

Honeybee ... sure hope you can come to WDW in October ... it would be mucho grand to meetcha in person. And I think I owe you and heather a Kir!

I'd better start writing down who I owe what drink to ... otherwise I'm gonna forget. And I'm not joking. Tonight I brought home Jay's winnings from the NCAA pool from my employer ... he won with enough overall points that it didn't matter which of his two "final" teams won the game tonight... and I gave him the envelope full of cash to count and then he gave it back to me and then I lost it somewhere in the house.

$440 in cash just up and disappeared for two hours because I couldn't remember what I'd done with it once he gave it back to me. :scared1:

Can dementia set in before the age of 40? :confused3

I think I need to get some sleep ... and would you believe after 5 weeks of jazzercise I haven't lost any weight? :headache:

Congrats on finishing your taxes and cashing in on the NCAA pool. (Even though Carolina won--boooo!) And thanks for the beautimus F&G pics, Miss Scarlett. They made me excited for our May trip!

Your promise of Kirs just sealed the deal--we'll definitely be there in October! ;) I'm not so sure about all that jazzercise business, though. I'm having flashbacks of Jane Fonda in a coordinating sweatband and leg warmers! :scared:

Well, I'm home with a sick whogirl today. She's so pitiful. So the menu du jour is applesauce, Sprite Zero, chicken soup. Anyone know of the appropriate wine to go with that? (For me! :rotfl:)

I hope your daughter feels better. My nieces have Roseola (sp?)--one right after the other--they're twins, so if one gets it, they both get it. Alex had it first, and now Sophie. Once the fever breaks, she'll be covered in spots. Poor baby! :(

Apart from Boukreev's book I think Breashears account would probably be pretty interesting too. I just finished Krakauer tonight ... he had a follow-up to the original publication that addressed some of the differences between his account and Boukreev's. It's sad to read how many people affiliated with the 1996 expedition have since passed away, including Boukreev.

Beautiful pictures, Brenda! :thumbsup2 Hope your sinuses get better soon. I'm thinking we're going to be home from school again tomorrow...:sad2: If she could just make it till lunch, then it wouldn't be another absence.

Glad you liked the pictures ... I've got more I just have to get them uploaded. Hope Whogirl feels better soon. :flower3:

Thanks kindly ... today the NCAA winning went directly to next year's cruise fund. We now have the entire cruise cost sitting in a separate savings account and still have 13 more months before we have to pay it off in full. We're just going to keep salting money away so that we'll have a nice stash for our big honking September 2010 Transatlantic cruise. :cheer2::cool1:

I have lots more F&G pictures to share ... Epcot really did a nice job the year we attended the festival.

And ... :rotfl2: ... on the Jane Fonda imagery. No one in my classes dresses like that. There's a good mix of ages in class and a lot of ladies who are heavier than me and all of them are better at picking up moves quickly than I am. I just don't pick up stuff like this quickly and am truly a klutz ... my mom used to call me Grace when I was younger because I wasn't at all graceful. I mean ... I tripped over my own feet all the time. Of course, once she figured out that I was half-blind it wasn't as funny ...

My nieces have Roseola (sp?)--one right after the other--they're twins, so if one gets it, they both get it. Alex had it first, and now Sophie. Once the fever breaks, she'll be covered in spots. Poor baby! :(

Is that something similar to scarlet fever? Poor girls, I hope they're better soon.

Very nice pics Miss Bendy!!! Makes me nostalgic for last year... :goodvibes

Hope all the sickies feel better soon. :grouphug: I've got sinus issues related to the weather and all these stupid fronts that keep moving through. :headache:

I wonder if alcohol helps a headache before making it worse? ;)

No but it makes you not care! :lovestruc

I was just going to say that... :rotfl:

Feel Better!!!

The topiary bushes plants are a work of art. Do they bring in extra butterflies for the festival? My condolences to everybody feeling under the weather - hopefully the time off over Easter holidays will have us rested and in good shape again.

Bendy - when you do the Jazzercise, are you dripping with sweat at the end? The problem could be that you're simply not burning enough calories to make a big difference. I alternate my workouts to that, depending on the day, it's elliptical, stairmaster or treadmill - and I set the treadmill to #13 incline, which is very steep. The machines give you a rough idea of the calories you're burning and on a good treadmill day (50 minutes), I'll have burned 700 calories and my T-shirt is soaked. If you combine that with reducing your calorie intake you have to lose weight. It's all about burning more than you take in. My problem is that when I fall off the WW plan it's never just for one day. I go on a bender, just like an alcoholic, and a week later I've easily wipe out the weight loss from 3 previous weeks. It's hard to get back on the plan, but as soon as I do, the weight falls right off again. I lost 4# since Saturday just by burning more calories I take in. Are you writing down everything you eat and keeping track? You'd be amazed at how we misjudge portions or how having little snacks during the day will add to your calorie count.

Tatania and anyone else that might want to check out the Disneyland Food and Wine Fest. I just ran across this great info-you tube commercial on it.
Starts in two weeks! :)

Thank you for posting the link and if I win the lottery tomorrow I'll be heading down there. I love the comment where the student says he loves to take lessons from Chef Andrew Sutton because he is "notorious". I don't think that's what he actually meant.

Thanks for posting this reviews on Johnny Garlic's. It's now on my list of recipes to avoid. One thing I do frequently by is pre-made buffalo meat patties as they make great, low-calorie burgers. Since the meat is ground up it's not tough.

Oooh it looks like so much fun! Wish I could find a reason to get out there! Thanks for posting.

Overall... this was a THUMBS DOWN restaurant for us. We weren't impressed. I was really expecting a WOW factor so, I think I over thought the restaurant. Definitely won't go out of my way to try this place again. I do know if I ever get to S.C. I'm trying Paula Deen's Restaurant. I've eat at Emeril's in Vegas, Bobby Flay's in Vegas and NYC. I loved their restaurants so, we were a bit disappointed here.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it. Eating at all the "food network star" restaurants is on my to-do list. Would especially like to eat at one of Bobby Flay's restaurants!

Brenda- great pictures from Flower & Garden!! Thanks for sharing! :upsidedow

honeybee, hope your little nieces get better soon! Are they babies? We are home again today as predicted, but I think dd will be better enough to go back to school tomorrow.

Well, the grand decision was made yesterday to get Dollywood tickets! I'm fine with that and really looking forward to going during Festival of Nations--here's a link. I'm pretending it'll be like a day at Epcot. :rotfl: (minus the wine)http://festivals.dollywood.com/mini-section/default.aspx?id=106&season=spring

Dollywood looks like it will be a lot of fun. I've never been, but heard raves from lots of friends about it. Take lots of pictures and share with us lesser privileged! :rotfl: Hope whogirl is feeling better soon. :)

First, I don't know where I've been that I missed 4 pages :confused3

I LOVE Le Cellier, but we've been there the past two years, so I thought maybe I'd see how Jiko's filet stacked up. I keep thinking about the CP package just to make sure we have seat; I guess I've got enough time to figure that out--will those ressies open up early like usual or do you think they'll go to the 90 day system, too?

Did you do lunch or dinner at Chefs? There are things on both menus that look good.

I did take a peek at Biergarten on the food porn thread and it looks better than I thought. I love the way the interior looks, and if I can get all of our party to go (8) we won't have to sit with strangers. Dh wouldn't care; he will talk to anybody.

You'll have to post your adr list when you get it done! I'm jealous you get to go so soon, but not of the heat. Although, Charlotte in summer is not much different than Orlando in summer, is it? :rotfl:

Jiko filet is better than LeCellier, but LeCellier is 1TS(if you're on the DDP) and you can't get the CP package at Jiko. I haven't heard anything yet on the CP packages for this year. Last year they opened up in July.

We had dinner at Chefs. I LOVED the scallops & black tiger shrimp  my dad, step mom & DH all had the beef tenderloin and really liked it. DD had the short ribs and thought they were to die for. DS got the hamburger on the kids menu and was happy enough, he was much happier when it came time to get the creme brulee for dessert :rolleyes1

94 days and counting till our summer trip :cool1: We usually go in June & December but with the kids in MS & HS now we can't take anymore December trips :sad2: so we decided to split the summer up a bit and go middle of July. It's hot in June, it's hot in July and yes it's hot in Charlotte at that time. Last year I think it was hotter in Charlotte than it was in Orlando while we were down there

Suh-weeeet! A wine tree ... :thumbsup2

Jay and I tried planting a wide variety of corks from some of our favorite wines in the hopes that we could grow a wine tree. ;) It didn't work obviously, or we would be very wealthy and living in a warm, tropical climate. :lmao:

:lmao::rotfl2::lmao:

Hope everyone starts feeling better  I should have some homemade food porn for everyone over the next week between Easter & Passover (yes, we do both at our house) :goodvibes

Hello all!

I wanted to start the day with some good food pics. My wonderful friends came back from New Orleans last night and since Jason and I had to cancel going at the last minute they brought us back dinner from -

Central Grocery - New Orleans, LA -muffuletta sandwich

It was wonderful salty cheese and meat goodness!
We also got Zapps - Spicy Tomato (my Fav.) and Voodoo but we haven't opened them yet!

Dollywood tickets were a hit with Olivia!!! Whew--you just never know with an 8 y/o girl. I'm excited because there's supposed to be food from the countries in addition to the music and shows!

kabuki - Hope y'all enjoyed the NOLA food!:goodvibes

whogirl'smom - :yay: Glad to hear she's excited!:thumbsup2

TigerKat - is was wonderful as always!
They went to a River Fest and a Road Food Fest and said the food was amazing..

I should be sleeping but it's storming and I can't sleep through storms ... so here I is.

Whoopeeeee ... I found a place out here in the sticks that's offering a beer / food pairing on a Saturday! So on the 25th Jay and I are going to give it a try ... for only $15 pp the price is right on!

I cannot believe how many special dinners there are around Stinktown (always during the damn week) and how affordably they are priced. I knew Disney was marking up, but this is ridiculous. Some of the local microbreweries are only charging $40 pp for a 5-course beer pairing meal and most of the 5-course wine dinners I've found are running around $60pp. Knowing that we have some affordably priced local options will take the sting out of not being able to afford a signature dinner this fall ... if the F&W group even offers any this year.

What's everyone planned for Easter / Passover / Egg Drop Day?

We're cheating and having my parents over for a brunch meal similar to the one we served Jay's mom and dad at New Year's.

Crabbie eggs benedict
asparagoose
honey baked ham
babka (I bought 'em from Dean & Deluca so they must be good!)
cheeses as yet to be determined
bird rolls
fresh fruit w/cream sauce
coffee
bloody mary ala Jay
prosecco
coffee cake (homemade by Jon)
tiramisu cake (ordered from the French gourmet bakery by yours truly)

I feel like I should have some kind of breakfast potato or something ... I don't know ... seems like something is missing here but I'm not sure what it is.

My mom's birthday was on the 27th of March and Jon's birthday is the day after Easter and since we're all godless heathens in my family we decided to make it a birthday party. I bought stupid party hats and noise makers and balloons ... Grimace will eat it up!

what are you friendies planning this weekend?

I'm gonna finally chow down on some stale peeps.... they're air drying as we speak... :goodvibes

Jason and I are having people here for National Ham Day!

We are having Bourbon Grilled Ham
Deviled Eggs
Mac and Cheese
Salad A dessert Costco will make! ;)
and Mint Juleps or Drunk Arnold Palmers
OH and WINE!

Have fun on Saturday and take pictures!

Brenda, you all must have gotten the storms that are supposed to get here later today. Calling for strong wind warnings and thunderstorms, yuk. I think a yummy fattening hash brown casserole would go very well with your menu. ;)

We will be going to my parents, along with my aunt and her two grown kids (and my cousins's new boyfriend) for our second Easter dinner. Yes, folks, you heard that right; we have one scheduled at dh's grandmother's at 1 p.m. and at my parents' are 4 p.m. I treat the 1 o'clock dinner as my appetizer course, because my family cooks better! :snooty::lmao: Here is the menu:

Ham
Turkey and dressing (my aunt is making this)
Gravy
green beans
Potato salad
Broccoli casserole
Cornbread salad
Rolls
Devilled eggs
Coconut Easter bunny cake
some kind of pie
and....

Brandy milk punch!!:dance3: My mother specifically requested this two weeks ago and sent me to the liquor store for the brandy. I'm glad I wrote this out because it reminded me I need to buy some half and half.
