What is best mix for a Belgian Waffle Maker and what else do we need?
My son's friend asked for help with a gift for his mother-she wants a Belgian Waffle Maker. I've found a good deal on a Black and Decker maker but what else does this kid need to provide so his mom can make waffles when she opens her gift? I've read some reviews online that suggest lots of oil on the cooking surfaces so I'll have him get a spray, a mix, butter and syrup. Ideas? suggestions? Strawberries maybe? Help please! I'm not a waffle eater.

my only tip is to make sure the waffle maker can be turned over..that's the key to a good waffle maker.

Other than that...there are many mixes out there. I'd buy a box of Krusteaz + a good maple syrup.

I use Bisquick mix. And suggest that he splurge and get the REAL maple syrup, not the Aunt Jemima corn syrup stuff with the maple flavoring. There's no comparison.

I use the Bisquick mix too! It has a natural flavoring in it that makes this mix the best! For waffles you add water, oil, and possibly eggs. We are out of it right now so I don't know exactly about the eggs. Also, we just use that spray can butter that you cook with to coat ours each time! Love it!

I'd like the answer to this too! I just got a Belgian Waffle Maker a couple of weeks ago. We just got a normal one, it doesn't flip, and it works perfectly, makes great waffles. We just haven't found the right mix yet.

I tried the Krueteaz one mentioned and the first time it was not good, I made it just as the box says. The second time I used milk instead of water and it was better, still not the best though. I'm looking for waffles that taste like the ones you get at hotels.

Someone at work gave me this recipe and says it's good, but I haven't tried it yet. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/40-a-day/waffle-of-insane-greatness-recipe/index.html

Also found this: http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Malted-Pancake-Original-33-Ounce/dp/B001ELL60W/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t Haven't tried this either, but sounds good.

Anybody have a mix or recipe that tastes like the ones you make at hotels on their waffle makers? Thanks :goodvibes

We've found the mixes don't work well in our Belgian waffle maker. They aren't dense enough to stay together that big and flop apart as you try to take them out. I use the recipe that came in the manual for the waffle maker.

That first one sounds good. I usually make everything from scratch, but all my Belgian waffle recipes were too complicated. Not separating egg white and stuff in the early am. lol I will have to give this one a try.

The best waffle mix you can get is Krusteaz. Make sure you get the Belgian waffle mix, not the waffle/pancake mix. We have a Mickey waffler and it's the only brand that taste good and turns out great every time :thumbsup2

I used the Krusteaz Belgian waffle mix and wasn't really that impressed. They turn out fine, but just seem to be missing the taste I'm looking for. :confused3

I don't like any waffle mix but have made my own using the Waffle of Insane Greatness recipe linked above. It's sooooo good and makes a perfectly fluffly inside/crunchy outside waffle. I double the recipe.

I have a Waring Pro waffle maker that flips over. Best investment yet! I make the batter the night before (or you can make it the morning of and let it sit for 30 min) and then just crank out the waffles. I can make 6-8 waffles in half an hour and we have breakfast and a few to freeze for snacks later.

I've seen cheaper waffle makers that flip at Kohls for under $40 and if you use a coupon they can be even cheaper!

All my kids want to eat EVERY morning are waffles.

Years ago we bought 2 Waring Pro Belgian Waffle makers. I make a double batch from scratch. I flash freeze a tray of cut up waffles quarters and then bag them in the freezer to toast each morning. 2 makers make the task so much faster. As it is, I have to spend about 3 hours from start to finish making waffles at least once a month.

I definitely separate the eggs and beat the whites to peaks and I substitute half the milk with seltzer water. Very light and crunchy. They eat so many waffles, they don't need all the extra calories or heaviness. I also add in lots of vanilla and cinnamon and some chocolate chips.

The kids can eat plain w/o syrup. Its flavorful enough. Helps when they are still eating on the way to the bus in the morning.

Good luck! Great gift!

Great information!! :thumbsup2 Thanks so much. I'm going to check Kohls for theirs and print out a few of these recipes for him. I totally agree about real maple syrup but I'm not sure this family-lots of children-would like it. Might let them decide that later. Meantime, we're on our way to a nice Mom's Day gift. You guys rock!!

Kohl's has one on sale for $49.99, if you have kohl's cash and the new coupon for 15, 20, or 30% off they sent out it will come down significantly.

We have this waffle maker that we got for our wedding 12 years ago and it still makes great Belgian waffles. http://www.hayneedle.com/sale/waffl..._sku=GSEB014&gclid=COCrkb-y868CFYhM4AodFzkJYg

I always use Aldi's Aunt Maple Pancake/Waffle mix and mix exactly following the waffle instructions and mine turn out perfect every time, crispy on the outside and just right inside. The trick is let it preheat for each batch, use a spray oil of some type and take them out as soon as the waffle iron stops steaming, so you know they are finished on the inside.

YES YES YES great recipe and second u on the Waring Pro also. Bisquick and Black and Decker have never done it for me.:stir:

My dad has two of the Waring Pro double waffle makers. They flip and have a waffle maker on each side, so each one makes two waffles at a time. Saves energy over running four waffle makers (which is what he was doing before) and he doesn't trip the kitchen breaker anymore. One double waffle maker would be enough for most people, but he cooks for a dozen people when he makes waffles.

We have a Waring Belgian and my dad has the Waring regular waffle iron. Love them both!

For the mix, try adding a little vanilla extract to the batter. I also add a pinch of sugar (to bisquick recipe on box).

My dad uses a recipe very much like the insane greatness posted above and it really is better than mine made with the mix, but he's retired and has no kids!!!

My Belgian waffle maker is Oster which I got at Walmart on black Friday for $9.:thumbsup2 Everyone has different tastes but we like bisquick.
