I know this is really silly, but I am terrified of spiders and have just seen photos on another board of spiders people have found in their villas and now feel terrified as we are staying in a villa, is this normal to have so many running around or is it rare. Am off on holiday in under three weeks and its taken the edge off my excitement. :guilty:

I have always stayed in a villa and never once have I seen a spider :confused3. I'm sure you will be fine :)

Oh! thank god!! was starting to feel really nervous, reading the other thread made me feel like it was normal to see a couple of these huge things whilst on holiday...

My DD does a complete trawl of the house every night looking for any spiders, as she's terrified of them and won't go to bed until she's happy there are none to be caught!

Believe me, if there had been any in any of the places we've stayed in Florida, she would have found them! I'm not saying that's a gurantee that there aren't some out there somewhere, but we've seen far fewer of them in Florida accommodations than we get here at home (in fact, I don't think we've ever seen one out there).

Hopefully, you'll have a spider-free trip, too :)

I have been to Florida 4 times now, staying twice in villas and twice in hotels. I have never seen any spiders in the rooms at all.

I have only seen one wild spider and that was in the fort on the Tom Sawyer Island. The rest have been safely locked up in cages at zoos. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

One point i would make is that in Wal-Mart you can buy aerosols of spider killer (Hotshots) - and very effective it is. You can use it to lay a barrier too.

It's not available for sale here as it contains a chemical that is banned for sale in the EU.

We've stayed in villas 4 times and like the others have never seen a spider there.

Julie

Don't want to frighten anybody, but the last villa I stayed in had something that looked like a (very small) scorpion. Has anyone else seen these?

Im afraid florida has a host of crawlies which you can't possibly totally avoid. On our villa stays we have seen harmless small reptiles (lizards) both near the villa and in the parks, small harmless scorpion type things and large-ish beetles. If we see any though its just a handful. At our last villa there was a discarded snake-skin just outside the pool enclosure (golf course). One thing we haven't seen though is any spiders!

Most villas are virtually airtight with their pool enclosures so nothing big can get in but unfortunately our little friends cannot be eradicated totally. Just keep your eyes open and if possible, don't disturb them.

i haven't seen one, but on our last trip one couple said they left the lid off of a tin of biscuits that they bought at WDW, and when they went back there was what liked a baby scorpion in it. after that i refused to walk through any long(ish) grass just in case

to the original poster. if you don't like spiders, don't do its tough to be a bug........

Will try and find it for you.

Thanks to everyone for re-assuring me, I feel alot better about it now, its funny I don't mind lizards or snakes its just spiders.

I cannot tell you how terrified I am of spiders :earseek: :scared1: :scared:  We live next to farmland and I am dreading when Farmer Joe harvests the corn he has grown this year . . . . that's when even more of the HUGE BIG BLACK mamas come into our house:faint: It takes me around an hour each night to go to bed since I have to check everywhere in the bedroom (sometimes with a torch if DH has gone to bed before me  ).

However, in all our trips to Florida I have only ever seen two spiders - one seriously nasty beasty whilst walking in the Everglades (can't expect anything else really) and a teensy weensy one in our villa this year.

My friend bought me a jokey birthday pressie - but it's brilliant - its from http://www.151.co.uk/brands.php?brandid=7 - "No More Spiders". Don't care if it only helps psychologically, it has (so far, everything crossed) worked. I shall be repsraying the house next week ready for the corn to be harvested.

Good luck to the OP, you will have no problems. Actually, we love the little lizards, they are quite cute and fun. We even got to see some rare native green ones down in the Everglades in August.

More fun was when my neice got married in Florida at the lake at winter Park, and I stood on a dead, HUGE! snake!
I have some video of it if anyone wants to d=see the size of the booger
Nice :-)

Where can you buy this from?
LOL! My thoughts exactly....
Found this supplier via a Google search, but other results came up too :)

Thanks Hilary. I also tried a Google search with no luck. I'll try again as this one wants to charge £5.80 postage & packing for 2 bottles!
