Being asked if we were going to tip.....

We were on the DDP and just got back last week. I was a little surprised about the way some of the waiters handled the new tipping.

First off they put the little card/paper with the bill to let you know that tipping is not included....then 2 out of the 5 places we ate proceeded to ask us about their tip. I understand the tip is not included, we brought cash to pay all of the tips.....if I wanted to charge it to my room using my card I would have told them. I think it's extremely rude to ask.

Again don't flame me b/c I know there are Disney vacationers out there not aware of the new tipping thing or how it works. I am sure they are being jipped out of tips too.

It's not like they asked us if we wanted to charge our tip to the room....they basically asked us if we were going to tip them.

Just a bit surprised!

I'd be pretty annoyed too if i were asked if i was going to leave a tip. But........perhaps they've been jipped so many times with people not understanding it's not included.

DH & I just returned, as well, and we used either the DDE or paid OOP. The little card about the tip not being included was with our checks, too. And the tip is included with the DDE!

Hopefully they'll have these awkward kinks ironed out soon.

From other tipping threads in 2008, I gather that they are asking about the tip before charging unless CASH is written on the tip line.

The reason for this is because once the card is swiped for the DDP, that's it. They cannot go back in and add the tip. This has surprised quite a few diners who counted on adding the tip in later.

The new system is so out of the realm of normal, maybe servers are making diners aware to avoid accidental stiffing? :confused3

I guess I don't understand about the DDE......I was under the impression, with all the 2008 changes, that no tips were included in any of the dining plans....DDP or DDE? Am I mistaken, or are you saying the total bill you rec'd already included an 18% add-on??

I plan on paying for my tips with cash. I also know about what we will be ordering and how much my total bill should be. Would it be easier to just tell the waiter/waitress, before they have to ask me, that I do intend to tip and it will be with cash?

I have read from a few Disney servers that simply writing CASH on the tip line indicates this for them.

DDE is not an actual dining plan. It's like a dining discount. You pay one price for a years worth of using it at Table service/lounges. And yes 18% tip is including now when using the card.

I would think that just having that suggested tip thing in there is enough for people to get it. I wouldn't be to thrilled with a server asking about his/her tip.

I just wrote the amount on the tip line AND put the cash in there when I gave them my card to swipe. This worked really well when I didn't have exact change. Once I was tipping like $8 or so and I only had a $20 so I wrote $8, left the $20 and my card, and got the change back. I didn't have my KTTK card linked to a CC (have heard too many horror stories about meals charged to the room instead of the plan) so I'm not sure if that would mess anything up.

I think this is just an adjusting period for Cast Memebers, as well as Disney vacationers. I wouldn't think too much about it. May have seemed rude, but the CM's are probably getting a lot of grief and being stiffed over what's included in the new dining plan. I'm sure this is just as hard on the CM's as it is on us.

Doesnt matter if its hard on the CM's, its tacky, unnexpected and over the top to handle it in this manner. It shouldnt be 'hard' on the patron, that is counter to any type of good/decent business practice. Fix it already!

I have to agree with the previous poster...I think having a CM be that blunt would would automatically make me want to leave a lower tip. It is just tacky.....

I agree with the last 2 posts. That would make me want to leave a lower tip for sure. It's very tacky and a great way to ruin a nice evening. There has to be a better way to handle this.

My wife and I are going in May and will be on the DDP. We plan on using cash to pay all tips. I guess we should write that on the bill/charge slip when they present it. What do they give you to present to the server to prove your on the DDP? I'm not really keen on linking our CC to our KTTK either. I'd be pissed if they charged it to our CC while on the DDP.

As stated before the CMs are trained to verify a tip before swiping. There was a long thread on DIS by Disneyserver; it really helped my understanding of the current system. Just keep in mind it really is the system now; not so much the servers. Some may be smoother with it than others, but bottom line they need to know the tip amount before "charging" your card. If you plan to use cash it seems to simply say/write cash handles the issue.

I am in the restaurant business and we've recently formalized our delivery service. Our "CS" business model is one where tipping isn't usual or expected, but tipping is a normal part of any food delivery business. I am debating adding a tip line on our credit card receipts as most customers who want to tip this way do so after the initial reciept is processed and are confused as to where to add this. I think some end up choosing to do nothing because they aren't sure. I had one person write in the tip then follow up with a phone call to be sure I understood their intent; my customers shouldn't have to spend that extra time to do business with us. I think my delivery people would get more tips if I changed the format. By the same token I don't want my "normal" guests to feel we are soliciting tips. I have a responsibility to see that my delivery people get fair compensation in order to retain them. If Jack's pizza is adding in tips it won't be long before my delivery people migrate to the Jack's of the world. I'm bound to offend or make someone feel awkward; guess these are the decisions the get me the big chair, huh? :lmao:

I would love to read the post by disneyserver. I too am having a bit of a hard time understanding the DDP and gratituties. :surfweb:

Disney just needs to straighten this out and make the dining plan include tips effective immediately, lol. How much is the DDE and how does it work if it includes tips?

The "patron" seems to really get forgotten in all this mess. It's always big, bad Disney and the poor servers. What about us? We weren't involved in union negotiations. What about us? :confused3

It doesnt' really include tips it just has an 18% tip automatically added to your bill so after dining you get 20% off then 18% added to your bill so essentially you are saving 2% beyond the meal and tip. I dont' recall how much it is (I'm thinking $60, but that could be off), but you have to be a Fl resident or have an AP to purchase one and it is good for a bit longer than 1 year.

We were there jan16-23. The first night we were there we went to Ohanas. The waiter even before getting our drink order asked us if we were on the dining plan. He asked us to see our cards. He came out and asks us how will you be paying. We replied we are on the dining plan and not going to order anything beyond that. Rudly huffed and rolled his eyes and stated " For my services of course." WELL Tipping in my book is earned not expected. We saw him once getting our drinks and once when the bill came. He did have a server assisting him and he did all the work. I wanted to give all the tip to the assistant and nothing to the main server.
The service has gotten worse since dec 06 since last trip. I can truly say Our only great service was at Le Celliar and we even called for the manager to brag on our server Stephine. And we tipped her ver generously..
