What are the "right" things to do as a guest in someone's home (non family) Do you strip the sheets from the beds and put them in the laundry room and make up the bed with the bedspread only? Ask for new sheets and remake it fresh. Any other houseguest niceties to do? Gift, I know, but please share how you be a nice guest.:)

When we are a houseguest (either with close friends or relatives) we strip the sheets and any towels we used and put them in the laundry room, and make the bedspread up a little. We don't put clean sheets back on. I do usually leave a little gift (I left a candle basket last time) in the room where we slept so the host can find it after we leave. I think that's more fun than handing them something.

I think it is odd to strip the sheets. You just make your bed & the hostess can wash them when she is ready.

When I stay overnight at my best friend's house I remake the bed each morning, until the last morning then I just leave it unmade. I try to be very tidy in the bathroom and not leave a mess, I pick up after myself, don't leave a water mess around the sink or toothpaste stains in the sink, etc. I help clear the table after breakfast, and offer any help she might need if she's preparing a lunch or dinner, etc. I take her out to eat in a restaurant to "thank her" for her hospitality.

If I know someone well enough that I am sleeping at their house, then I know them well enough to say 'should I strip the bed for you?'

I cant find it now, but I just read a funny article about being a houseguest that went over a lot of the common sense things....
~if they dont wear shoes inside, take yours off
~if they are working while you are visiting, stay out of their way until they leve for work (meaning let them shower, coffee, etc before you)
~make yourself at home...dont expect your hosts to wait on you hand and foot. They like you well enough to let you 'live' there, so get your own soda out of the fridge.
~dont use their toiletries, bring your own
~you dont have to do everthing with them, plan some time away (assuming you have your own vehicle). They may be sick to death of tourist things in their area, so you can do that alone which gives them some alone time with their family.

Depends on who we are staying with. Sometimes I strip the bed, sometimes I just make it.

When we visit our best friends that moved to Florida. I will strip the bed and even wash the sheets on the last day. I will then put them back on the bed for her. If I don't have time I have even asked there DD(20) to do it for me when she does her wash.

I ask if they want the bed stripped or made up.

At my home I never have the guest strip the bed. I might not get around to washing the sheet for a few days, so I leave them on the bed.

When I'm a guest I always make a point to help clean, especially dishes. But that's just me.

I usually ask. I have to tell what my mom does when she stays here. She strips the bed and FOLDS the dirty sheets. It cracks me up every time. She leaves a stack of dirty FOLDED towels and sheets on the washing machine. I guess she can't stand to leave a mess?

I would like my guests to wash the sheets and put them back on the bed. When they're done I also would like them to go wash the rest of my laundry, fold it/hang it up and make sure all the dishes are clean and put away. Hehe!

Honestly though, I'd rather they just leave the sheets alone. I'll wash them when i'm good and ready!

This reminds me of the time my mil had guests stay and then come back through the next weekend. They stripped the beds both times. She was not happy about washing everything twice in one week, actually 3 times, including the time right before they got there.

I guess I would just ask the night before.
