Beer in checked baggage?

Is it okay to bring beer in your checked luggage? Would there be a problem with this and with ME? I didn't think there would be a problem but I thought I would check. Thanks. :thumbsup2

I'd be leery of putting any carbonated beverage in my checked luggage. If you do decide to try it, make sure it's double-baggage (or even triple-bagged) in case it explodes. If it leaks out of your luggage and into someone else's you won't be very popular. I think I'd just buy some when I got there.

No way. Please plan to just purchase when you arrive.

Really? I read somewhere else online that it was fine to do?

I'm sure it's okay to do rule-wise, but not a smart thing to do. With the way those bags get thrown around and possibly the altitude, I can't imagine you would get to your destination without every single beer exploding in your suitcase.

I check beer often even on international flights! As long as you pack it well its all good!

Why bother packing it? Isn't it just easier to buy it there? I can't imagine it's worth the risk of soaking all your suitcase contents with beer on the likely chance that one or more of the cans gets damaged!!

Beer is allowed by the TSA in checked bags.

Whether it's a good idea is a different matter.

With airlines now imposing fees for overweight bags, oversized bags, and (in many cases) second checked bags, I'm not sure that beer is a good way to use the limited luggage allowance.

And considering how airlines handle bags, I hope the beer would be very well padded and placed in reliable, watertight bags. I would hate to have someone else's beer leaking into my luggage.

United does NOT allow alcohol in checked baggage unless packed in preapproved containers, and there are reports on flyertalk.com of luggage being denied at check in.

As one who has had an entire suitcase full of clothing soaked by someone else's carelessness, please do rethink this. I had to pay about 100 Euros in dry cleaning costs to remove the smell, and my suitcase was never the same. And of course the owner of the alcohol went on their merry way, perhaps bemoaning the loss of their alcohol, but not realizing that they had also ruined someone else's items.

I am flying SW by the way.

I am actually just looking for practical ideas from people who have actually done it (and it worked or didn't work).

I didn't realize this was a "hot topic" and that I would get jumped all over for something that was just an idea and hasn't actually happened.

Nobody is jumping all over you. We are explaining why it is not a good idea. Just because your airline happens to allow it, does not mean that it is logical.

Perhaps you could be considerate and consider your fellow passengers. That is all that we are asking. Beer is available in Florida; albeit not all brands, but it is available.

Yes. It's OK as far as airline rules on checked baggage go, but there are many reasons it's not a good idea.

For one, if it does leak (and it sometimes will no matter how well it's packaged) it will make a mess of your luggage and any other luggage in the vicinity of your leaking bag. That's bad enough for you, but think of the poor other folks whose belongings you have trashed.

For another, do you want to take up valuable luggage space now that most airlines are charging $25 for a second checked bag? That's a pretty hefty shipping charge for beer.

For a third, a six pack of beer in cans weighs about four pounds. Bottled beer weighs more. That's going to get your bag over the 50 lb (+/-) weight limit pretty quick, and you will be charged $75 for each overweight bag. That's a really expensive shipping charge for beer.

The only reason I would pack beer in my luggage is if I had one or two bottles of something really, really special--say a bomber or two of Three Floyds Dark Lord. Then I'd bag it, bubble wrap it, and bag it again (and maybe a third time for good measure).

:confused3 Um yes, you are being very rude. Telling me that I should be "considerate" and consider other people when all I did was ask a simple question.

I didn't realize asking a question would be grounds for being "inconsiderate"

We are being factual and realistic. The reason that the Transportation Board motto is 'there is no pixie dust in Transportation' is that we have to deal with facts here.

You asked a question, people responded. No need to claim that we are 'jumping all over you'. We are simply asking you to consider your fellow passengers and explaining what can and does happen.

Because you don't like the response does not make someone rude!!! :lmao:

So because someone else thought that you were "inconsiderate" they weren't entitled to thier views, but you are entitlted to call them "rude":confused3 Everyone's views count, you don't have to like them all!

I agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that is why I asked the question to see both sides. However, there is a way to go about giving your opinion and a way that is respectful. Forget it it though, I will go somewhere else where people will give me answers without judging me at the same time.

Don't think anyone was being rude. Once you give the airline or TSA your luggage, it's out of your control. It's a fact that everyone's luggage won't be handled like it contains heirloom china. Just not worth the risk of having a real mess all over your clothes, as well as anyone else's. :thumbsup2

And from your siggy, a 21st B-day is special! Have a great day! :)

WOW! I honestly don't think anyone was rude. You asked for opinions, and people gave them. Not one single person said you were a horrible human being for even considering such a dastardly act, just that it would probably not be the best idea, nor the most considerate.

And clearly, you've made you mind up anyway, and simply did not like the answers you got.

When you ask a question along the lines of "Is it okay to do X", you have to be prepared for the answer, "Not really." That answer isn't rude. It's just an answer.

Now, "Only an idiot would even consider doing such a stupid thing," well, that's rude.
