Beer in checked baggage?

When you ask a question along the lines of "Is it okay to do X", you have to be prepared for the answer, "Not really." That answer isn't rude. It's just an answer.

Now, "Only an idiot would even consider doing such a stupid thing," well, that's rude.

Once again, I obviously asked to see both sides. I believe it or not just wanted input. The posts that have bothered me were not "not really" answers, most of the people who have posted have said helpful things.

United does NOT allow alcohol in checked baggage unless packed in preapproved containers, and there are reports on flyertalk.com of luggage being denied at check in.

As one who has had an entire suitcase full of clothing soaked by someone else's carelessness, please do rethink this. I had to pay about 100 Euros in dry cleaning costs to remove the smell, and my suitcase was never the same. And of course the owner of the alcohol went on their merry way, perhaps bemoaning the loss of their alcohol, but not realizing that they had also ruined someone else's items.

This is apparently the post which upset the OP - no idea why.

I asked the OP to rethink packing alcohol. If that makes me rude, frankly I don't care. There is nothing rude about explaning why something is not a good idea. I will continue to respectfully ask people to rethink packing alcohol in future.

ive done it, packed it in bag upon bag in the middle of my suitcase with everything surrounding it......got to me in one piece....or should i say case....so it can be done.....apparently it isnt looked favorably upon. but you cna choose to do what you want, if you do it, be sure you pack it very carefully..there is the possibility it will leak....there is also the possibility that your hairspray will explode...your shampoo, conditioner perfume facewash bodywash lotion and all other type of products could leeak and break and ruin your clothing and leak onto other peoples luggage as well...and with the new TSA rules all of that stuff has to be checked....so through no choice of your own that stuff is going to be tossed everywhere ....good luck in what you pick

the biggest difference however is that if your shampoo leaks and oozes into my luggage, I can easily wash it out. Beer that has exploded and/or broken leaks much more quickly than shampoo, and it leaves a very bad odour which does not necessarily disappear, even over time.

Great points. And, of course, few people bring 12 ounces (ave. beer container size) of shampoo, rinse, moisturizer, hairspray-those alone would add up to about 3 lbs. Most of us limit our liquids for a couple of reasons-weight, and more importantly, less risk of problems if there is leakage.

Is it okay to bring beer in your checked luggage? Would there be a problem with this and with ME? I didn't think there would be a problem but I thought I would check. Thanks. :thumbsup2

To get a clear answer, you need to ask a clear question.

"Is it okay to bring beer in your checked luggage?"

Okay with who? Apparently, it's OK with some airlines. Judging from the responses here, not so OK with your fellow passengers whose bags might get doused with your booze. Ask yourself if you'd be OK with it if you claimed your bags and all your belongings were saturated with someone's booze, aftershave, pickled bologna juice or whatever. Just because something is OK with an airline doesn't mean it's good common sense.

ME, I'm sure, doesn't object as long as it doesn't create the obvious problem stated above.

The slogan "Drink Responsibly" refers to more than just the amount you choose to imbibe. It also refers to being aware of the impact of your decisions on the people around you.

That being said - do YOU think it's OK??

I wouldn't mind my child smelling like shampoo. I would, however, have a problem with my child smelling like beer. I really don't see why you can't: (a) ship the beer down separately, or (b) order beer for delivery from a local store. Regardless of whether you can or can't pack it, why would you spend the extra money for overweight luggage, extra luggage? No one seems to have answered this. Your money, or vacation. :confused3

Well first off I didn't think I was in danger of going over the 50 lb mark. I am not a heavy packer and am gonig on a 4 day trip. Plus I am strapped for cash and am trying to make this trip fun while cost effective at the same time. I knew beer would be for sale down in Disney but I didn't want to buy it at Disney prices. If it brought my luggage overweight (or I went over 2 bag limit) I wouldn't have even thought about it. I was just throwing around an idea.

Provided you turn 21 before you arrive, you could order your BEvERages and other assorted snacks and goodies from Garden Grocer or WeGoShop---you'll get a decent price, and avoid the prospect of being The Girl With The Luggage That Smells Like A Grungy Bar.

Well now missy..now you're quoting yourself!! Haven't seen that before. :thumbsup2
Anyway...to Spam....as long as it's okay with the particular airline, then go ahead and give it a shot. But....be sure to package that beer so as to prevent any leakage/spillage! Wrap it up in some bubblewrap, then in a towel. Put the whole shooting match in a huge ziploc baggie. Then wrap it again..and rebag it. I would use a trash bag for the final wrapping. Pressurization does some whacko things to anything that is 'bubbly', which beer most certainly is. I know you would feel awful if your beer explosion caused other passengers distress.

I have had shampoo leak...so not a pretty picture when that bag is opened and I now have to start my vacation by washing everything!! Now, every single thing that is liquid, gel, mousse...you get the idea...is bagged. Everything!!!

Oh, and lest I forget....let's keep in mind what there 'isn't' on the Transportation board...yep...pixiedust. Sometimes our pixiedust-less posts come across as being rude. Sorry if that has been the case here.

hahaha then you havent seen me pack my shampoo conditioner lotions (sunblock, suntan, body lotion, face lotion...you get the point) i dedicated an entire suitecase to that stuff :lmao: now i need to reconfigure my packing due to having to pay for extra bags...or cough up the money....but thats a whole nother thread....haha....

to the original poster.....the best answer is it can be done....it isnt always the smartest though or safest for your luggage or as others have said their lugggage. i know money can be tight but i will tell you that if you drink beer (its all i drink as i mentioned before...dont want to sound like a drunk just trying to help you) they generally cost anywhere from $4-$6 for a 12oz or 16oz. from where im from thats the norm anyways so im okay with that...if thats expensive to you then i would suggest like someone else said maybe gardengrocer (or something to that affect?) or grab a 6 or 12 pack in the store at the hotel (less expensive then buying singles at the bar) its an all around safer bet ....whichever you choose to do hope it works out for you

You can be rude as long as you aren't snarky. :rotfl:

I don't know who will ship it.

I tried with my coveted 7 oz pony bottles of Miller Lite (which I can't find in IL OR FL and I have to drive to MO to get them if that isn't a pain in the you-know-what!) and UPS told me they will not ship alcohol of any kind. I guess I could lie about what's in the box, but dang, if something happened and they drop kick my box of beer (really!) and there's foam leaking out all over the place I'd probably be on the UPS no-ship-list forever.

I have always brought wine home in my luggage. I have done so on more than a dozen occasions and from all over the world. I have never had a problem!. I have used plastic and bubble wrap.

Wow, I can honestly say I'm shocked. I'm sure you're correct, I've never tried. I just figured if Costco can ship water, and you can ship all kinds of chemicals and stuff with couriers, there wouldn't be a problem with shipping beer. Believe me, I feel your pain (and SPAM's too). I too am a beer drinker and the prices at Disney are CRAZY. I just couldn't see having to drag around a case of beer in my suitcase and take a chance of it exploding. As my Gram used to say: "Where there's a will, there's a way!" BTW, happy birthday to SPAM.

I agree. I think your REQUEST was phrased very politely, and was followed with a personal experience supporting your request. Honestly, the only rudeness I've seen is the criticism of posts that do not support what the OP wishes to do.

Ewww - gross!

Or (c) take a bus to Downtown Disney, walk across the street to the Hess store, and buy beer cheaper than at the resorts.

I have checked bottles of beer in my suitcase and only had one incident. The bottles didn't break -- they burst open soaking my suitcase and clothes. I now make sure the bottles are in a trash bag to prevent leaks. :thumbsup2

People check liquor, wine, and beer all the time. As long as you are not bringing a home brew you will be fine!!

It's already been said, but I'll say it again.......the risk of it spilling into you suitcase and leaking into someone else's suitcase is too great.

Did you know that you can have beer delivered right to your resort from www.gardengrocer.com? They don't have the beer listed on their website, but they do deliver it. You type in your order in the comments section and fax them your ID. We've used this service and it works well. You can also order bottled waters, snacks, etc. You can order all the beer you want and not have to worry about transporting it yourself.

Do you think the other travelers whose luggage was soaked with your beer thought it was "fine?"
