Beer at WDW-has it come to this???

They have a pomegranate wheat beer that was so popular this past summer that they've decided to brew it year round. I thought it was okay, but I'm not big on fruit-infused beers. OTOH, my mother loved it. :)
David
we usually steer far clear of fruit beers as well, and only had the pomegranate wheat because it came in the sampler - anyway, I was plesently suprised, dh and I both liked it. I don't think I would run out and buy it, but we have had FAR worse in samplers

No offense, but anytime fruit has to be put into a beer, you lose me. I just can't see putting a lime or orange into a Smithwick's. Oh my! :)

widmer is a american style hefeweizen, which is generally served with lemon (but put a lemon in a german hefeweizen and you will hear gasps of horror) It can enhance the natural citrus notes, and since AB now owns 40% of widmer, quality has gone down and this beer needs all the help it can get ;) Not a requirement though, but worth trying once

Smithwicks is an ale, completely different

Sorry but your logic makes no sense.

If it was crap, it wouldnt have the sales it has. And dont blame them for being able to perfect the brewing process which allows you to get the same beer in st. louis, tampa, United Kingdom...anywhere in the world.

Do you look down on Disney because they are so large?

Everyone has there opinon, but saying it it tastless just shows how ignorant you are.

Because only the very best beer is made with rice, right? :rotfl2:

Sorry. It's fizzy, yellow, mass-produced swill for the masses. Don't worry...it's okay to like it. Leaves more good beer for the rest of us!

When I was in the Microbrewery business, whenever some new customer came in and asked "what do you have that tastes like Bud?" we would point them towards the bathroom ;) I'm proud to say we have educated thousands of people on how good beer can really be.

This is slightly OT, but does anyone know how/where to get decently priced good beer while staying on property (I'll be at the Boardwalk Villas)? I'd like to get some six packs or tall bottles to drink in our room after the parks close.

Something Sam Adams level or better. I'd prefer to pay under $10 per six pack. Is this possible? Am I going to have to ship beer to the resort before I leave?!:sad1:

2 options I can think of:

Take a cab out to the local stores (the grocery stores have decent selections, but there's some specialty "package" stores around, that have even better). Cab might cost you $20 round trip, depending on where you go.

Order from garden grocer (www.gardengrocer.com) and have them deliver. You'll need to order groceries, too (not sure the minimum order..when we've done it it wasn't much of an issue) but can include what you want for beer/wine/alcohol in the comments section and they'll deliver that too...the alcohol is a seperate charge, which they sometimes (usually?? not sure, they didn't ask us to) ask you to prepay. Delivery fee is about $12 + tip.

That's pretty much it. The on property selection is either limited, or relatively expensive. I can't remember WHAT the Hess station had for beer, but I don't remember them having anything close to Sammy-level, never mind higher. I remember coors, bud, heineken, miller light....that kinda stuff. You could check there, first, though....

You guys should see how hard it is to get six packs up here in Pa. I have to go into Baltimore County for six pack selections. The vast majority of what's up here is "case and keg". So if I wanted to just sample something "new", I'd have to buy a full case.
Pilferk is right tho--on property options are pretty limited.

Thanks, guys. Seems like a cab ride might be the best option. Any ideas about the closest grocery or package store with a decent selection?

I don't think there is a "decently price good beer" option on property. :sad2: If you're at BVW, consider stopping at Big River before you head back to your room. None of their beers wow me, but generally they'll have more body/flavor than what you'll see in the parks.

Isn't the sale of six packs in the works in PA? Obviously, the distributors lobby is against it, but it would nice, for once, for the legislature to do something good for the people, as opposed to catering to the lobbyists.

Here's how silly PA law is--I have a cousin who worked for a small brewery in the Poconos (which no longer exists :sad1: ). They could sell beer to the public, but only two six packs at a time. I wanted a few cases, so I actually had to buy two six packs and take them to my car four times.

I guess Disney doesn't think people come there to drink specialty brews. Oh well, there are some retail stores with a decent assortment not too far off prop.:earsboy:

Amen to that!

I think the only reason they label those beers as such is so they can charge more for them (being specialty beers and all!)

This sounds like the old beer is beer arguement...there is far more variation in beer tastes than wine...so many people refuse to go out of their comfort zone and try something different unfortunately.

Hey, pretty much anyone who is really serious about beer believes Budweiser is a flavorless brew made with very cheap ingredients and yes, you can say it is consistent and usually fresh but that's about all you can say . Once you start drinking craft beer there is no turning back (I've converted many family members over the years).

The reason Disney has such a crummy selection is probably obvious..they must get sweetheart sponsorship deals from AB and Inbev.

We just got back from 11 days at WDW this week and the best beer we had was the Unibroue, Brooklyn and Great Divide bottles we purchased at ABC. I did get into a rather animated discussion with the manager at ESPN (who thought Blue Moon was some new exotic beer) after I told him they had the worse beer selection possible for a sports bar and this is why we wanted our wings to go. It was nice to see expanded wine choices at the F&W Fest but no change on the beer side unfortunately (and actually worse since Beck's has once again taken over the Germany pavilion). And more bad news...no more half yards at the R&C.

Since you are staying at the BWV my recommendation would be to walk out to the Hess station - prices are much better than Disney...the best you'll end up with is probably Yuengling (drinkable at least) but the price was quite reasonable.

Yuengling lager is my new "go to" beer for when we have people over who are scared of whatever it is I prefer to drink. Most people (even Bud drinkers) seem to like it. I still prefer the various Saranacs, Brooklyns, etc but the Yuengling appeals to a lot of visitors.

I had one guest who looked at what I was drinking (A Saranac IPA) and what a different guest was drinking (A Yuengling lager) and decided to have the IPA because it wasn't as "dark" (color) as the Yuengling (we had poured the bottles into frosty glasses). I tried to warn him that he'd probably prefer the Yuengling, but he wasn't buying it. He thought I was trying to "trick" him into drinking "harsh" beer, assuming that a lighter-colored beer must be closer to the taste of Coors Light than a darker-colored beer. The look on his face was hysterical when he took his first sip of the Saranac. :rotfl:

Funny about Yuengling--clearly better than Bud, but now seems to be catching on as a "specialty" beer. I find that interesting, as there isn't a place anywhere near where I live where you CAN'T get it. It's at every pizza joint, VFW Hall, restaurant and biker club in the area. About as mainstream as you can get--.

I enjoy Widmer very much, though I haven't had it in quite a while. I don't consider it an "American style hefeweizen" rather a "German style hefeweizen" that is made in America. I can relate to gasps of horror though, you can hold the lemon on my glass.
