Bedwetting whilst on holiday

Hello!

I need some advice from parents, or those who have travelled with children who are prone to bedwetting...

When we go away next summer, we're taking my twelve year old niece. Due to having meningitis a few years ago, Jasmine does wet the bed most nights. The doctors believe it's partly an emotional and behavioural reaction, but also that due to the illness, there was a delay in the normal development of bladder control.

She does wear a nappy/pad sort of thing during the night, and in the past her parents have tried medication to help control it, but they stopped - I think because it wasn't suitable as a long term solution.

The problem is that she does occasionally have accidents. Despite her nappy, we do always get her up during the night to use the bathroom, but occasionally, she will go again during the night and this will leak wetting the bed.

I know her age may be different, but has anyone gone to Walt Disney World with a little one who wets the bed?

How did you manage it?
If they did have an accident, did Housekeeping mind?
Do the mattresses/duvets have waterproof coverings, or should we bring our own?

Sorry for the bizarre question - we have various methods in place to managing it when at home (such as waterproof sheets, duvet and pillow protectors), I just don't know what the set up will be in Florida!

Hollie xx

no idea but a if you pick up a thin waterproof sheet rather than the quilted ones they are small so shouldnt take u too much space in your luggage .then im sure the supermarkets over there will sell the disposable bed mats if you feel you need them

I would go for the disposable bed mats - very discrete and you could either buy here or buy from Walmart when you arrive

I've heard that housekeeping can just drag the bedding off and put into their laundry sacks including kids teddies etc if halfway down the bed etc. If using a full sheet this may just get taken by housekeeping in error. At least if they did this with the disposable pads it's not expensive to replace again.

Going on experience years ago with my kids, I took water proof sheets.you can buy them at walmart etc. it might be worth you emailing the hotel and ask what they have, they must have had this question asked loads of times before.
one of mine used to also have those pull up night pants, but I was advised by a specialist this doesnt help kids who have this type of problem, as they relax more and feel secure wearing these so consequently wet them! I took mine out of them and after a couple of weeks, was dry with the odd accident. this was at the age of around ten.

When my daughter was younger she would intermittently wet the bed, had 2 accidents on our 1st trip, I just stripped the bed and told housekeeping in the morning and they replaced the bedding during the day. As a previous poster said, if you either contact them beforehand or let them know when you check in, they may provide you with a spare set of bedding just in case.

It's great to see its not just me thinking about this! My 7 (nearly 8) year old has a problem at night so I'm already considering the options but think the pampers bed mats might be the route I go down.

you do get night pull ups for the older children i remember using them when my son was around 5years old but they came in a larger size for the older child. if i remember there are alot like wearing pants rather than a nappy

Yes, we use Huggies pyjama pants for our 8 year old (find they are better than Pampers), and also either Huggies or Pampers bedmats. The pyjama pants are quite comfortable, and don't usually result in much 'leakage' requiring the bed to be changed (perhaps once a week on average, when my son was wetting himself every night). I think the age range is 8-15 for the bigger size.

Thankfully, my son seems to be going dryer at long last - been dry the last 5 nights, so going to try to ditch the pyjama pants next week for the first time whilst he is on school holidays.

Funnily enough, when we went on holiday he would often be completely dry most nights, but would still be wetting himself every night at home. I'm convinced this is because he was sharing the room with us, so felt much less scared getting up in the night to go to toilet if he needed to. Just recently he has also confessed he is sometimes too lazy to get out of bed in the morning to go to toilet! :lmao:

Don't worry, my DS is nearly 11 and we have a wet bed most nights. We take a waterproof sheet with us and wash everyday. Don't know what it's like staying on site, but we manage with a washing machine.

As other posters have said talk to the hotel

This thread has really reassured me and it's great that there are so many other families out there struggling with bed wetting. :)
My little man is nearly 7 so I thought I'd discuss it with the GP-he advised me to stop fluids 6 hours before bedtime-that's lunch time!!! :rotfl2: we don't let it bother us too much and my DS certainly doesn't know it's a problem so I know it will sort itself out when he's ready.

with my 7 year old he occasionally wets his bed when he drinks too much, we have to stop his fluids from about 6pm if he is thirsty after that then its a little sip :)

That might work in the uk, but kids need their water intake in heat and humidity! Hopefully you'll be fine by your trip!
