We thought everything was great...until we discovered bedbug bites all over us! The management didn't care and only offered to move us to another room -- when we had to leave for our flight in 6 hours!

It completely ruined our honeymoon! Now we'll come home to having to disinfect absolutely everything that we brought with us in hopes that our home does not become infected.

We had a great time at Universal, but it was severely marred by this. I am so completely disappointed and disgusted by the way that we have been treated.

ewwww, bed bugs.........

what a miserable way to end a honeymoon.....

i haven't had that experience with bb but you never know when or where that can happen.

be sure to do the email survey you are sent from the hotel.

:scared1: oh boy I really hope management took this serious and are proactive before it spreads.

Sorry that happened to you, that would really creep me out:worried:

Care to post room number?

I have to be honest with everyone.

We spend lots of stays at RPR all the time but I will tell you what we do every trip just as a precaution.

When we get our room number assigned we never bring our luggage to the room first. We visit the room and check everything out first. I strip back the sheets, pull bedside drawers out, check behind bed boards, under bed frame areas, curtains, and etc. You get the point. I carry a flashlight just to check.

After all clear we get our luggage from the car. The luggage goes only on the luggage rack away from the wall. We never unpack into drawers we always live out of the suitcase. Dirty closes goes directly into a black sealed garbage bag. Sometimes we also put our luggage in separate large black lawn bags tied.

Every morning we check for unusual signs of bites on us. When we return home the dirty close are immediately washed in hot water.

I know this all might sound crazy but I would rather be safe than sorry. Many years ago we stayed offsite (around 2004) and DW woke up with all types of bites. I had none as we can be standing outside with Mosquitos and she will be all bit up and me nothing, I guess she's sweet and I'm sour. Lol

We have been checking for many years as it has become more public and in the news. Just think how many people come and go from all parts of the world. I have to say we have never found anything at RPR but we have heard reports before.

I'm not saying that the OP was or wasn't bit by BB but people have to keep in mind about all the rains and Mosquitos at dusk, dawn, and anytime here in FL. You don't see them for a while after you showered and have gone to bed.

From what I read BB will bite and leave patterns in a cluster.

Well sorry for the long post but hope this helps.

I am sorry to hear about your experience and am sorry about their reaction. As a hotelier we take bed bugs EXTREMELY seriously. I can only let you know of my reaction to this situation. Please know I am not attempting to belittle your experience in any way. If you came to the front desk to make your statement I would ask where the bites were located. You mentioned that they were all over. Bed bugs are slow and normally live in specific areas of the bed, so bites all over are not the norm, you normally find bites on your extremities and normally on just one area of the body. Then next thing would be to inspect the room by taking the beds apart and inspecting them for signs of bed bugs and finally contact the pest control company to inspect as well. If results are positive for bed bugs then we handle on a case by case basis with the guest.
The last thing any hotelier wants is a room with bed bugs as it is extreamly costly to treat a room for them and not to mention the satisfaction of you the guest. If I can as how many days were you there prior to receiving the bites? If you slept in the room nights prior to receiving the bites I would think that it were other bug bites (not necessarily from the room).

Again I am sorry for your experience.

I never bother to look. we've been lucky, No any issues anywhere we've traveled with bed bugs (knock on wood) but I always check out reviews on TripAdvisor where people are sure to report anything that was an issue. I wouldn't expect to find them @ RP.

Did have a fire ant incident @ one of the Lowes resorts & cockroaches at a WDW deluxe (palmetto bugs they assured me ha ha, I'm a realtor, know a roach when I see one). Head of WDW housekeeping told that time that it's routine policy that all rooms are treated on a regular basis, assume it's policy and all major providers in the area. Our room in question was sprayed the next day while we out and I didn't see any crawling around that night.

it's my understanding that bed bugs are brought in by guests...they like the new surroundings and stay. My guess is majority of other bugs are from guests cluelessly leaving the sliders open in their rooms. Florida is nothing but buggy:crazy2:

Did you find some bugs so that you can have them positively identified? It is a real pain to go through all that effort if they weren't bedbugs.

Disinfecting will do nothing. If you have the option to do so I'd take a pair of clothes and throw them in the dryer on high. Bag up everything else and try to heat treat it when you get home. About the only way to kill those things is to burn them, that's why whole home heat treatments are considered much more effective than having someone come to your house and spray. Believe me... I know. We've had the misfortune of carrying those (literal) suckers back to the house. Talk about an expensive guest.

We do this too...Every Hotel , everywhere we travel.

OP so sorry this happened to you

Don't know if I've ever been bitten by bed bugs. Can't worry about it. The average person will swallow 70 insects and 10 spiders while sleeping in their lifetime. Whatever.

It's obvious you've never experienced this. Imagine carrying a few of these home with you unknowingly. You get a bite or two one week. Then as the colony size increases so so the frequency of the bites. You spray the house down trying to kill them yourself and are happy because it's been a day or two and no new bites. Problem solved? Then you see more bites and read up on the problem only to find that the bugs only come out every few days to feed. The colony is still growing. They're hiding in the furniture. In the walls. Everywhere. The only answer at this point is to just deal with it, go the cheap route and get a pro to spray and hope the ones you have aren't resistant, or call in the heaters and pay a hefty sum to have your home baked for a day.

But yeah you can't really worry about it. At least not until you've experienced it. Then you might understand the vigilance that some of us take in examining rooms.

The bigger problem is you can't ever really be totally safe. Your luggage could be thrown in the airplane next to an infected bag. Someone could come stay at your home and have some travelers with them. There are even stories of high end department stores in NY city being shut down for cleaning due to infestations.

Anyway, long story short, this is far different than swallowing spiders in the night while sleeping.

We are fortunate that we drive to the hotels as we live close, so no air travel for us. Also we only used years ago luggage services. Luggage sharing the same place and space from all over the world. You can get them in rental cars and movie theaters too. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Very good information. Not all bites are bed bug bites. Flea bites, fire ants bites, mosquito bites, and chigger bites look much the same as bed bug bites. The only difference is the pattern of the bites. Bed bugs bite in a pattern of 3 bites in a row. You aren't usually covered by bites with beg bugs.

I wouldn't expect to find them @ RP.

Why? They can be anywhere. They were in fancy offices in NYC a couple years ago (and probably still).

Which is exactly why some people don't freak out about the idea. Because you cannot ever be "safe" from them. You could be free and clear, then one person comes over to your house and boom, they are there again.

Definitely good info.

Please share room number as I am staying there next week eek:sad:

google bed bug registry

RP is not on the list

anybody who feels they have encountered bed bugs really should consider contributing to that site and also post their experience on trip advisor.

I'm not sure you should contribute to that site unless you know for sure you have actually encountered bedbugs. That's one of the things I dislike about those sites. Anybody can post whatever they want without any proof.

travel reviews in general are subjective, you need to average them out. Quite likely there are erroneous reports attributing random bug bites in a hotel room as a bed bug issue. IMO if you see a pattern of bad reviews, especially concentrated in a month or two, there is evidence of some sort of infestation. Certainly good enough for me to keep far, far away.

trip advisor has it's hits & misses but I find it a good tool to help make an informed decision when combined with a quick cross check via a review from another site.:thumbsup2

If there truly were bedbugs in that room, then that will be the cleanest room in the hotel! Here is why I say that. When a hotel finds out there are bedbugs in a room the following happens at least in Florida. The room itself is taken out of order for 3 days and the rooms on either side as well as the room directly above and below the affected room are taken out of order for 1 day. The affected room is treated 3 times and the beds are "baked" (heated to over 120 for at least 6 hours) or thrown away, the other 4 rooms are treated once as a precaution. The reason I said that the room is the cleanest room is that the chemical they use is a super fine powder and it coats everything (think of a gallon container of baby powder exploded in your bedroom) so after the 3 treatments the room has to be cleaned from top to bottom by housekeeping.

Now this is only done if the hotel want to take these measures and I am sure that some hotels do not do this however any hotel that wants to continue doing respectable business follows this with their pest control company.

You also have to take into consideration most hotels especially the brands (Hilton, ect) deep clean each room normally 3 times a year and housekeeping normally inspects for signs of bedbugs at that time as well.
Bedbugs will happen however hoteliers do there best to prevent them.
