Bedbugs at Royal Pacific

Care to post room number?

I have to be honest with everyone.

We spend lots of stays at RPR all the time but I will tell you what we do every trip just as a precaution.

When we get our room number assigned we never bring our luggage to the room first. We visit the room and check everything out first. I strip back the sheets, pull bedside drawers out, check behind bed boards, under bed frame areas, curtains, and etc. You get the point. I carry a flashlight just to check.

After all clear we get our luggage from the car. The luggage goes only on the luggage rack away from the wall. We never unpack into drawers we always live out of the suitcase. Dirty closes goes directly into a black sealed garbage bag. Sometimes we also put our luggage in separate large black lawn bags tied.

Every morning we check for unusual signs of bites on us. When we return home the dirty close are immediately washed in hot water.

I know this all might sound crazy but I would rather be safe than sorry. Many years ago we stayed offsite (around 2004) and DW woke up with all types of bites. I had none as we can be standing outside with Mosquitos and she will be all bit up and me nothing, I guess she's sweet and I'm sour. Lol

We have been checking for many years as it has become more public and in the news. Just think how many people come and go from all parts of the world. I have to say we have never found anything at RPR but we have heard reports before.

I'm not saying that the OP was or wasn't bit by BB but people have to keep in mind about all the rains and Mosquitos at dusk, dawn, and anytime here in FL. You don't see them for a while after you showered and have gone to bed.

From what I read BB will bite and leave patterns in a cluster.

Well sorry for the long post but hope this helps.

Great info will use this next time about the luggage

We do exactly as Bluer does. Every time. Every room. We live right outside Cincinnati, OH, and supposedly there is a bedbug "list" somewhere that lists Cincinnati as one of the worst cities for bedbugs in hotels. Well, obviously we don't stay in hotels here in our own town, but I bring it up because it's in the news a lot here, therefore we are maybe a little hypersensitive to the fear of bedbugs. We always check out the room first, pull back the sheets, check the headboard and walls, and all the drawers. We also live out of our suitcases and don't put them on the floor.

I don't know, maybe some of this gives us a false sense of security, but it doesn't hurt to be more cautious rather than less.

I also tend to think that hotel management (at least I really, really hope this) does take it seriously. The threat of an infestation could so financially ruin a hotel, not just the infested one, but the reputation of the rest of the chain, very quickly, I would think it would not only be taken seriously but aggressive action would be taken to stop it as soon as it's known.

Actually had a guest report Bedbugs this weekend at my hotel. Responded immediately and met with the guests. 1 person had a series of marks (bites) on their lower back along the spine but nothing on the other guest. Inspected the room with no signs of bugs. Contacted our pest control to inspect they found nothing . I did mention the strange place the bites were located on the guest. He said it sounded like a chair so he also inspected the chairs in the room again with No BB, he mentioned that he had heard of instances of Taxis and Restaurants having them.

I cannot speak for other hoteliers but I take BBs very seriously.

OP here...

The room number was 1753. Tower 1, 7th floor.

I should have been more descriptive about the pattern of the bites... but I was very upset and posting late at night. I noticed the bites on my husband's back and side... three separate clusters. I had a suspicion that they might be bedbug bites, but I had never experienced them before. I spent about an hour doing research about them online, and I had no doubt that's what they were. He had not been anywhere without his shirt other than when sleeping. We had a room with 2 queen beds and ended up falling asleep in separate beds each night (I know that sounds weird since we were on our honeymoon, but we open and close the parks and generally end the night on our separate computers... using them in individuals beds is just easier and more comfortable). I'm guessing that is why he had the bites, but I did not... though I did find what looked to be shed skins in my bed.

Management finally moved us to a room on the first floor. They sent security by to interview my husband and take pictures of his bites (at 1am... so fun!). After that, they let him stay up all night to wash all of our clothes before our 9am flight, and I got 3 hours of sleep. Fun.

I will say that after the pictures were taken, they agreed to take off one night from the bill. We have yet to be charged for the other night. I am hoping that they will just take our deposit for the first night and not process the other charge. It really was a terrible experience. They acted like we were lying until security took the pictures. I had really liked the hotel and planned to leave very positive reviews up until then. :(

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are going this weekend and now I'm worried.

Is 7th floor where club level is?
I will request to stay in another tower :/

To the OP,

"We thought everything was great...until we discovered bedbug bites all over us! The management didn't care and only offered to move us to another room. "

You now say that your DH had cluster on his back and side not all over his body. Also you say us and you have none.

Then they did help you move to another room, comp a night, plus do your laundry.

Not saying it did not happen but in your only 2 posts the stories don't match. Once again not belittling it.

Yes, I do understand what you're saying. The first post was written in the midst of the hours-long ordeal. I was very upset and perhaps was not as specific in my description as I could have been. The events in the first post represent the first couple of hours before management finally agreed to do anything.

I wrote the second post as an update of the aftermath and to answer any questions for more details. At the time of the first post, I did feel that I had some on me, but they were not nearly as severe as my husband's, so I ultimately chose to ignore the one's on me because I couldn't be sure they were from bedbugs. To me, three large clusters on my husband was "all over." I had never seen so many bites (of any kind) on one person!

Oh, and they did not help us do anything. We moved and did the laundry ourselves. Management was generally apathetic.

Ok, like I said there was a big difference between your posts. Also I stated that this might be very true. But on the internet you see all types of stuff no offense to you. There have been plenty of reports of BB everywhere. They do take them seriously in most hotels. I think you should contact Loews corporate since you are unsatisfied with the outcome.

Did have a fire ant incident @ one of the Lowes resorts & cockroaches at a WDW deluxe (palmetto bugs they assured me ha ha, I'm a realtor, know a roach when I see one). Head of WDW housekeeping told that time that it's routine policy that all rooms are treated on a regular basis, assume it's policy and all major providers in the area. Our room in question was sprayed the next day while we out and I didn't see any crawling around that night.
They weren't trying to be tricky, the palmetto bug is a specific species of cockroach, also called the Florida woods cockroach, but Floridians and other south Easterners often use Palmetto bug for any roach. (End Cliff Clavin moment)

I just stayed at RPR for 2 nights, tower two, fifth floor, and no issues... I did get a pretty awesome case of disney rash (golfers vasculitis) that some people mistake for insect bites... Google it for pics... I had three patches above my sock line on both legs, but knew what it was the second I got it... Now 5 days after it appeared it is fading. Dd also got heat rash all over her back, which to someone who has never seen heat rash, might also think it is bites... But she almost always gets it when we go someplace hot... So again, we knew what it was.
