Bed Wetting

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Those comments about an UTI got me to thinking that I shouldn't let this go... I made an appointment with an urologist for next week.

As a child I didn't wet the bed, but I suffered from numerous UTIs. It turned out that I had an undetected Ureterocele which resulted in one of my kidneys failing. It was not a hereditary disease, so I doubt she has the same problem.

But, I'm going straight to the specialist... hopefully it's nothing... better safe than sorry.

It runs in my family. Two of my family members did until they were 12/13 and a couple in adulthood once in a while. My ds (8) has always peed in the bed, maybe 3-4 times a week minimum. The dr checked him out and we tried medication to try at stop it at night, but it didn't work. I just make sure all the beds have waterproof mattress pads (he changes beds at night) and stay stocked up on goodnight pullups. I don't like the boxer kind as they leak down the leg. We never let him have more than a little water after 6pm but that doesn't work either.

DS7 still wets the bed just about everynight. We spoke to the Dr. about it and the doc wasn't too concerned. Told us to limit fluids and caffeine.

DS is tall and well built for his age. The doctor thinks that his bladder just hasn't caught up with the rest of his growth. So while I"m not concerned about it medically - I know this bothers my little guy - so it bothers me too.

I do chuckle when he tells me that he's on his last "pull up". It just seems weird to have the child have to remind me about buying them. :rotfl:

i was a bed wetter too. until i was around 12 or 13 i think. my brother too. and a few cousins. my poor parents tried everything but nothing helped. i even had an alarm thing on my mattress. there was some sort of sensor under my sheet and as soon as it had a drop on it this loud alarm went off. it was supposed to wake me. instead, i slept through it and my dad would wake up, come wake me up, and then i had to clean up and go back to sleep! :lmao: guess i was a sound sleeper!!
it wouldn't hurt to mention it to the doctor, but probably something she will just have to outgrow.

I second what most others are saying - if her doc checks her for a UTI & she's fine, then it is what it is. Some kids are just bed wetters. DS12 wet the bed a few times a week until he was about 9. DS9 has never wet the bed once, go figure. Our doc was old school & said do not make a big deal of it. Decide if you'll use Pull Ups or not - just be consistent. We chose not to use Pull-Ups. I bought several waterproof crib pads - they are the perfect size for a small child to sleep on. When the accidents would happen DS would know to get out of bed, change himself, put the wet clothes & crib pad in his hamper (I always had 2 on the bed at a time) and go back to sleep. He outgrew it & it hasn't happened since. DH was a bed wetter & out doc also said it can be hereditary.
