Bed bug protection -what products & are they worthwhile?

DD is heading to college & I"m looking at mattress pads. Are bed bug mattress pads worth the expense? Her college had some issues last year so I know they are going to be extra cautious this year. Just trying to figure out the bed bug pads really help or are basically a marketing tool playing on fears.

Whatever you do duct tape the zipper area on pad & pillow covers. Nursing homes go through the same problem and were told to duct tape all zipped areas an inch or two on each side. When you arrive at the dorm go in w/ only a hair dryer then go to the furthest point from window light on the bare mattress. Then blast that corner w/ the hottest hair dryer setting. If it looks like the mattress is having a slow bleed there is bed bugs. When one of my cousins was getting her undergraduate she was evacuated from her dorm for bedbugs. That was 10 or 15 years ago. My other cousins dh is an exterminator and swears the only way to get rid of them is make the home 160 degrees, no pesticides needed.
