Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Good morning Lean Meaners!!!

How the heck are this morning???

All about me Yes, we all have the right idea about it being "all about me". Sometimes, I let it be all about everyone else. Those are the times when I all but stop training, when I let everyone else's problems become my priorities and I don't do what I need to do for me. There are just times when it has to be "ALL ABOUT ME" or I lose me! I used to think that was a selfish attitude and then Toby Kieth came out with his song, "Sometimes, I want to talk about me!" And I realized that SOMETIMES, it should be all about me!

Debra You had to fight for your race and in your race! It sounds like PR to me! Plus, you learned that sometimes it should be all about you!

Dave I'm glad to hear Narnia is great! I was so hoping that you got to see Indiana Jones. Some say it is another great Indy flick and others are saying it's a real yawner. Of course, the yawner people are the ones who are artistic and wonderful and wouldn't do anything just to please the masses or the movie goer.

Mike Ironman! That is just so awesome. I used to call ironman races the "kill me, if you can" races! Continued good luck with that killer training!

Lisa That's wonderful that you aren't gaining! That means you are doing a whole lot right, in my humble opinion. Congrats!

Maria Sometimes real success is measured best by knowing, you could have done way worse, but didn't.

Everyone I missed, y'all make a great day! Don't wait for it to just happen.

I'm off for a little ole 4 mile walk!

Good Morning Lean Meaners!

I hope everyone had a peaceful evening, and we're ready for a new day!

I did 4 miles, which did not feel great. I made myself finish, but I felt pretty wobbly. In the last 3 days I did more than all of last week combined, and I think my legs are considering a revolt. I'm either going on the bike today, or taking a rest. We'll see how I feel when I get home. I have a funny feeling I'm about to have time to read Truman. It is a great book, but it is a commitment to read it. I'm about 125 pages in, just under 900 to go...

Last night we had barbequed turkey cutlets and mashed potatoes. This was my first try with turkey cutlets, and I found them delicious! We'll be adding those into the rotation. I was full and tired, so I skipped dessert (yes, that's a first!).

I'm staying off the scale until Saturday, so I don't freak out if I'm not rapidly losing weight. I figure after a week, I'm bound to show an improvement. Those 5 lbs are in my sights!

Dave -- DS wants to see the Narnia movie, so I'm sure we'll get there before too long. He also wants to see Indy, so that comes first (ok, 'cause I want to see it, too!). Glad to hear you had a good time, and you are doing a good job keeping recovering Erica entertained! :thumbsup2

Lisa -- I subscribe to Fitness, but I'm so far behind in the issues, I'd hesitate to recommend it. I'm wishing for a slice of that blueberry pie, it sounds wonderful! I bet you use nice, fresh Maine blueberries, Yum! I'm smiling just thinking about it. :yay:

Mike -- You are a hardy soul, out at 0500! Good job on your commitment, and your efforts. Your training is awesome! :worship:

Debra -- Great to read your race report, but I can see how your needs ended up on the sidelines. You just have to stop being so nice and considerate, and a little more "mean"! It's ok to make your race all about you. As some other wise soul said, you did the training, you get to stick with your plan. It sounds like you did the best you could under the circumstances, and you should feel proud of your accomplishment! :cool1:

On that same note, I have a similar problem when my dad comes to visit. His favorite food group is the buffet (not that you can find many of those around here), but we always have a trip or two. And our "guest suite" is in our basement, so I'm working out in his living space. He's good about going somewhere else, but I tend to find the treadmill unplugged, moved, etc., and it's hard to motivate myself to keep the workouts going. I'm thrilled to have him visit, but it's hard on my lean meanness! :rolleyes1 I feel like I should be spending all my time when I'm not at work with him. It's ok in the summer, but when he visits at Christmas, I am not walking outside! :sad2:

I guess that's the biggest issue -- my guilt! So, how do you guys put yourselves first and not feel guilty about it? I have about six weeks before his next visit, so plenty of time to get in a new mental frame.

A shout out to Vic, Shan, Bill, Tracey, Stacie, Wendy, Connie, Beth and my other Lean Mean Buddies! :cheer2:

Ok, Lean Meaners, Make it a Good One!
Maria :upsidedow

Good morning Meaners!!!! Boy, y'all got chatty after I left yesterday!

Debra: Welcome back!!!!! We miss you when you are gone.......so, next time take us with you! :thumbsup2 Boo to the blisters.....I am glad that I don't have the issue, but really sorry you do! Have you tried to use the Body Glide on them? I always lube my feet for a race! About the IL question......I am not a good one to comment. When I have a race, it's also family time and vacay. So, usually I am up for whatever the day before a race. We sight see, stay out to late, etc..... I never stopped to see if it affects my racing or not....maybe because I am so slow to start with! Where to eat is hard too......usually pick something 'kid' friendly. I make it about the boys until after the race, then it's about ME! When I did my marathon last year, after it was over, it involved me in the hot tub and driving to any destination! Sometimes its easier for me NOT to focus on myself during race weekends, so I don't get to freaked out! Hope it works better for you next time!

WWDave: I guess the Narnia movie is next on my kids list of movies to see. They loved the first one. It made my oldest read the whole series of books! Glad you had a good time!

Mike: I think any addiction is hard to beat! Good for you for the many years being 'clean' from tobacco! I know how hard it is.....like putting down the Oreo hard......sometimes I don't win that battle! :confused3 How different we are! I never thought I would be the person I am now........and so glad for it.

Lisa: I love my Fitness magazine! It's one I do subscribe for!

Maria, Connie, Tracey, Wendy, Big Vic, and a shout out for Bill! :wave2:

Have a great day!

Beth

Good afternoon Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a great Tuesday.

Bodyweight exercises and core training last night. Scheduled for 3 this evening.

Maria – WTG with the 4 miler!

Connie – Have a great walk.

Mike – WTG with the 22.4 miler!

WWDave – Have a great workout!

Lisa – Bake us something good, and hope you have a great run and bike workout.

Debra – Congrats on the ½, and on the PR. Congrats to DOOD also.

Tracey – Glad you were able to spend some time with your grandma.

Beth – WTG with the weight loss. The All Star race was about as exciting as an F1 race. I hope the 600 isn’t that boring. This Sunday is one of my favorite racing days. Grand Prix of Monaco, Indy 500 and the Coca Cola 600. WooHoo!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

:)

Good afternoon!
Big Vic...I'm with you, the 600 has to be more exciting.
Maria...WTG on the 4 miler and the turkey cutlets sound awesome!
Connie...Gotta love that Toby Keith song!;)
Mike said:
Tracey: Sounds like my house growing up...my parents had 4 boys in 6 years, so we were good for a gallon of milk a day, two loaves of bread a day, usually some stuff broken every day in the house, and at least one fist fight
this is soooooooo my house.....when do boys stop wrestling? I guess I shouldn't ask because DH39 is still joining in.:rotfl2:
Dave...Narnia sounds like it was a good flick and I really want to see the new Indy movie. Harrison Ford still looks soooooooo good!
Lisa....Yum, blueberry pie----they are Maine blueberries right? And, thanks, I'm having an "awesomely wicked" day.:)
Deb...Yay! You're back. Congrats on finishing the 1/2 and in a terrific time (not what you hoped for, but AWESOME just the same).:cheer2: I do subscribe to Fitness, but like Lisa, I read RW from cover to cover and I find that I fall behind on my Fitness subscription.
Beth, Shan, Bill,Stacie, Wendy, and all others...:flower3:
Did my 3.5 miles on the TM yesterday in a perfectly respectable time.:) It's nap time for little guy so I'll be doing Pilates in front of the TV. Take care all and have a great day.

Mike: Thanks for your wise words. (Oh, but darn it! I did expect to have a great race day. *Sulking, hands in pockets, head down, kicking a pebble.) I'm just going to tell my ILs that you recommend I minimize my time with them. You don't mind that I take some liberties with your suggestions, do you? ;) :lmao:

And WTG with quitting tobacco dipping. My dad smoked for 35+ years, then quit smoking all at once. Cold turkey. Says he misses it, but he's too lazy to start and stop. Strange man. Have I told you that I'm in awe of how you continue to train in the cold. Man, I hate the cold and numb fingers just scare me.

Lisa: I so admire the self-reliance thing. I was just talking with DOOD the other day and we came to the conclusion that in a post-apocalyptic world we would be the fodder (read: meat) of the new regime. We're definitely not equipped to fend for ourselves, although it's something I think we should work on. In that vein, I'm looking forward to your review of the new protein bar--I'm going to get back into my experiments in that area--and the bread. Btw, I couldn't find your posts on the bread recipes on the WISH subforum. Was I looking in the wrong place? :confused3

I'm going to pick up this month's Fitness--it was the PB/banana smoothie that won me over as I want to compare it with Mike's very tasty drink. We're a Runner's World family and, occasionally, the Running Times. DOOD has a subscription to Marathon and Beyond that he's lukewarm about, although I found its review of (last year's) Rite Aid Cleveland event to be fairly accurate.

Dave: Thanks for the review on Narnia. I'll be seeing it this week--I'm looking forward to hearing Eddie Izzard as Reepicheep the mouse. It's also cool that this film has less special FX than the first. Oh, and "battle of the pudge"? You? Now, what's wrong with that statement...:rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

Connie: You're right. I learned something this weekend. In fact, that's one of the best things about doing it. This time around, I knew some of what I was getting into (unlike January), and I did it anyway! :rotfl: The whole race was one big, teachable moment. So I really loved what you said to Maria:
Sometimes real success is measured best by knowing, you could have done way worse, but didn't.
I just need to embrace that on a daily basis. You helped make my day a whole lot better.

Maria: You're doing great! :thumbsup2 You've really racheted up your miles, so you probably could to with a rest day--or a core day, hint, hint. (Of course that hint is more to me than to you, as I need to do some Pilates soon.) Good strategy with the scale, too, so you're focusing on amping the activity and the eating. I understand the whole guilt thing with parents--obviously I'm not one to offer any useful suggestions. :sad2:

Beth: I don't know if I can take you all with me, but you're the first people I'm announcing this to: Pittsburgh has announced the return of its marathon!! After a 5 year (I think) hiatus, the marathon has a new sponsor (Dick's Sporting Goods) with a three-year contract, and a date (May 3, 2009). So you're all invited to run the Pgh hills. Even if I opt to be on the scream team instead of on the course. :rotfl2:

Thanks for your insights on races as family get-togethers. I need to consider that aspect as well, because we'll be changing the implicit rules. My ILs invited themselves to his second marathon, and have been his marathon groupies ever since. Established a precedent that seemed to work until DOOD started getting serious about his running and then I decided to join him. But I don't want to ignore their needs, either. P.S. I've tried both Body Glide and petroleum jelly, and use the latter. I'm open to any other suggestions for the blisters. :confused3

Vic: There, you had to go and mention core training and make me feel guilty. Because I know that's what I should be doing this very moment. Congrats on YOUR success, though!

Tracey: Did you watch House last night? I was a little disappointed by this season and, to me, last night's conclusion either means next season will rock or it will be even worse than I can imagine. I love your description of your 3.5 miler--a perfectly respectable time. I'd like one of those, to go with my perfectly disreputable self. Oh, and thanks for the Pilates reminder. You have Vic are both making me feel guilty. How about you, Maria?

As for me: Thanks, everyone, for your support and advice on future races. I'm feeling okay about things today, and am almost over kicking myself about things. In a lot of ways, I'm more upset on DOOD's behalf than mine. It was only my second 1/2 and my 4th race (The Goofy, the Race for the Cure (which I walked), and this), so I'm okay with where I'm at for being so new to the game (started about 16 months ago). But DOOD had been training hard and was pretty upset with himself--said he ran a stupid race--and I just feel bad for him. Before I started running, I was his full-time support crew and ran a lot more interference on things. So I feel like I let him down this weekend.

Anyway, DOOD and I agreed that the Disney races were going to be about the fun--the event, friends, family, food, and of course Disney--and he'd only concentrate on PRing a race or two a year. On those races, we'll take a hardline stance about things and (gulp) maybe tells my ILs they aren't invited to them. That'll be a hard discussion, but ultimately better than having us build up this silent resentment. (At least on our end.)

Oh, and I was pleased to be able to do some light XT today. My quads are still a little sore, but I got out there and moved.

Debra: Why don't you have a few races scheduled "at the last minute". That way, on the 'spur' of the moment decision, you wouldn't be able to invite them along? Of course your DOOD would have to be up for it.....but keep your plans for several races secret? Bring them along for the Disney races, which is for fun anyway? What they don't know, won't hurt them! Just a thought.......Then it can be 'all about you!'

Good morning Lean Meaners!!! It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day in the neighborhood, would you be mine, could you be mine, won't you be my neighbor??? (couldn't stand Mr. Rogers, LOVED his theme song! :rotfl: )

Field day was just fun. It was hard keeping up with three grandchildren each doing five events and often at the same time. I think I got more exercise than they did. But we had a good time and it's all good. And I managed action shots of each one of them!!

I will have the little darlings all next week. Their mamma, my DD, is having a complete hysterectomy on the 30th. She has stage 4 endometriosis and the surgey will be hard, they will be burning all endometrial tissue from her intestines, kidneys, bladder, ect. Because her SO works in the gas fields and has to be gone all the time, she will be staying here with us. I am keeping the kids to help keep them occupied and worry and stress free. They don't need to see their mom cleaning out the fridge, etc as if she won't be going home, again.

I wanted to pass along information about a video I am using. It's the "10 Minute Solution -- Rapid Results Pilates" As you may remember, I HATE Pilates! This makes it doable....well almost doable, some of the exercises aren't very doable, yet!!! It has 5, 10 minute segments. You can do them all or combine them or just do one! It has made doing Pilates a little easier on my self.

Beth I think that's a really great solution for some of Debra's and DOOD's problems! Around here, we often use the excuse....well we just don't know when we will have a chance to fit another/that/whatever in! Just make it the truth, by not planning too hard!

Debra I am tickled you liked my measurement of success! I use it frequently. :rotfl: I am glad it made your day!

Mike Definitely congrats on quitting the Nicotene! It's too darn expensive anyway. You can do more races with that money! DOOC and I boht quit smoking eight years ago. What a releif!

Everybody I apologize for skipping you, just know that I keep you all in my heart and mind you are great neighbors!!!

Hey guys! Just a quick fly-by.

I feel so guilty. I have not been able to get back on schedule w/ my workouts. I just can't get my butt out of bed. My eating has been horrible too! ugh. Bojangles anyone! Chicken biscuits! Oh, biscuits are my weakness!!!

We are on holiday this weekend..a long weekend! Yay. I am taking my running clothes and will do a few runs on Sat/Sun/Mon to get me back in the groove. My eating WILL follow!

I can't catch on up on everyone indiviually this time. Sorry. Work is calling. I now have one more person to support and he has decided to China and Japan next weekend so I'm working on his trip.

Shout-out to Deb...Sorry to hear about non-goal time and the blisters! Congrats on your PR though! That is fantastic.

I think there was a bit of conversation on living near family/kids/grandkids??? I live beside my BIL/SIL and they live behind DH's parents and beside the grandparents... So, we all live in the cul-de-sac of neighborhood which back ups to DH's parents's house. It's OK. It has it's advantages and disadvantages... Sometimes it's ok...I don't mind. Having them close is fine, but sometimes there are issues that if we lived even 5 mins away, that wouldn't be issues and can cause a bit of stress...at least for me...

It seems everyone is well on track...except me... I'm going to jump on the bandwagon though and work on that weight loss starting "Come Monday" :rolleyes1 I need to get through a "going-away" dinner tonight and get through this vacation weekend and then I'm going to really focus. I'd like to lose 20lbs - 25 lbs by Marathon Weekend in January. That is totally possibly. Shoot. 30 or 35 should be possible, but let's just start with 20 ok.

Hope everyone is healthy and happy. Remember to keep it FUN!!!

Have a great day y'all!
Stacie

Hope there's room for one more to join :goodvibes I decided that it's time for me to lose some weight - I really didn't like the way my pics from the Minnie marathon looked. I've asked my PT if we can work on weight loss exercises instead of running for a while. It's a much tougher routine - I think because when we focused on running, it was more about core and balance... now it's weights and jumping rope. I guess it's been a while since I've jumped rope but I never remembered it being so difficult! Anyway, it's been a great incentive for me to stay away from the sugar! I don't want that hour of hard work to go to waste!

Hello Lean Meaners!
Just got back from a field trip to the zoo----it is a beautiful day here.
Deb...Actually, House is on right now(on TIVO). So I'm not really watching it, just listening. Obviously, it's not good enough to fully keep my attention. I have been known to spray deodorant (aerosol) on my feet. The cheap kind, like Suave, works great for keeping tootsies dry and blister free. Glad you liked my "perfectly respectable time". I will never be a speed runner, I'm just always looking to be a "wee bit" faster.
Beth...Nice suggestion about the "last minute races" for Deb. That sounds like a good idea. Thanks again for the encouragement to get back on track with eating---it's been a good week.:)
Connie...I would say that you're a "happy girl" today with your little serenade---I'll do my best to be a good neighbor. Sorry to hear about your daughter's surgery. Remind us when it gets closer and we'll add her to our prayer list. We'll add a big inclusion for you as her caretaker--what a blessing you are to your family.:lovestruc
Stacie...Beth is getting us back on track with a conscious effort to eat healthier. Jump on board! Have a wonderful weekend.
Vicky...:welcome: the more the merrier!
Everybody else...Happy day and
I'm headed outside to get a run in.

Tracey Thank you so much. You brought a tear to my and a smile to my lips. I will let you know about DD. I am anxious, but I am really good at hiding it. I will do my best NOT to eat it!

BunnyVickieFooFoo Welcome to our little club! We always have space for one more. We'll just squinch up a little ....or maybe lose weight to make a spot!!! :thumbsup2

Good evening Meaners! I didn't get a chance to get on here before now.....LTO! A busy day! It was my 'get everything done' day. Lawn mowing, grocery store, laundry, etc..... It all got done, I am glad to report!

Ok, everyone who is with me with the conscious choice to lose weight.....I am getting the train ready to pull out of the station. Who's with me????? Role call!!!!!:dance3:

My tip for the day: I will not eat 2 hours before I go to bed. This is very important to me.....if I eat, it just sits in my stomach, not really fueling me!

Connie: I hope your DD is ok! It will be a challenging week for you....good luck!

Stacie: Please join the adventure. My goal is to lose 20 pounds in 6 months. You are welcome to 'come' along!

Debra: I am sorry about the blister thing......darn rain! Hang in there....loved your RR!

Bunnie: Welcome to the fun......this is a great group!

Mike: How's it going, you workout maniac!

Big Vic, WWDave, Maria - how's it going???:yay:

All about me........My eating is going really well (it's nice to be motivated!). I am having really bad sugar cravings though.....last night was a real struggle! But I got through the 'pain' and refrained from sugar driven snacking. I have to say being accountable here helps me alot! Don't want to report a big 'no-no' snack!

I got a decent 4 mile run tonight (in the rain, of course :sad2: ) I am glad I forced myself out there though. I just didn't want to face my TM tonight.

I found a decent recipe for b-que chicken tonight.....even the kids liked it!

That's it for now!

Beth

Good morning all. Work computer issues today. I disconnect from my transcription portion everytime I open the net so I will be gone today. Hang in there everyone, eat well and exercise happy!!!

Good Morning Everyone,

I know it's been a while since I've posted. I have a really hard time finding the extra time to post. I will try to do better (she says once again).

Beth: Please add me to your train. I WILL eat healthier!! I'm glad you have your motivation, because you are so right about it being mostly mental.

Debra: I'm sorry you were disappointed in your race. You did learn some valuable lessons about pre-race routine, etc. It is a really hard position for you and DOOD to be in, but after putting so much into your training, it's a shame to not be in the position to give your best effort come race day. Good luck with a solution. Sorry about the blisters. Have you tried different socks? It may just have been the rain, and there's nothing you could have done differently. Thanks so much for compiling all the Lean Mean Wisdom.

Mike: As always, great workouts. Sorry the weather has been so cold for your biking. You do get extra points for getting out there.

Bunny: Welcome to the Lean Meaners. I loved your comment about not wasting your hour of hard work by eating sugar. I'm going to add that to my list of motivators.

Stacie: Have a great time on your vacation. Enjoy a little R&R and when you get back you can jump back into training with a lot of energy. Congratulations on the trophy you won last weekend.

Connie: Thanks for the video recommendation. I just ordered Pilates for Dummies on AmyBeth's recommendation. I hope I don't hate pilates as much as you do. I plan to alternate that video with the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred one I've just started. I really like that one, it's only 20 minutes, but you really feel like you've worked when it's done. Lot's of good wishes to your DD.

Maria: Good luck with the 5 lbs. I think it is really hard trying to maintain your schedule when family visits. My Mom visits 4 or 5 times a year so I feel like I don't get to see her much. Often I will leave her with my kids while I go out to run for an hour. That way she gets to spend quality time with the kids and I still get my workout in. I do always ask her before hand if she's OK with it. Good luck with fitting your Dad's visit into your routine.

Tracey: I'm always impressed with how you fit your workouts in around all your kids. Good job!! I loved the comments your Grandmother's friends made.

Lisa: I buy Women's Health magazine and I really have liked that one. I haven't read Fitness yet. I'm glad you are enjoying the PB banana smoothies, although I can't imagine drinking anything PB flavored. I may have to try it, although I probably should avoid it, since PB is one of my problem foods. I can't have just one serving. I constantly go back for just one more spoonful again and again.

Dave, Vic: Hello. Keep up the good work.

I'm having motivation problems as far as staying within my WW pts. I'm using up most of my points early in the day then feel like I have to starve myself in the afternoon/evening. Then of course I'm hungry to start the next day. I know that I have to make better choices earlier in the day, but knowing something and doing something about it are not the same. I am feeling tired a lot, but I think that's my allergies and allergy meds that are causing that. I'm hopeful that will improve soon. It is harder to stay motivated when I feel so tired. On a good note, I've gotten in a groove with my running. I haven't skipped any of my workouts in the last week and a half, and I've been feeling pretty strong during my runs.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Hi Everyone,

I am pretty new to WISH and I just found this thread.

I did my first 5K and 15K at minnie marathon weekend this year! I did it to get in shape after having DD last June. I lost about 20 lbs (and am now back down to just below pre PG weight   ) while training without cutting out or cutting down on everything I should have (:drinking1 beer).

I hope to lose between 30-40 Lbs by the 1/2 in January!

My short term goal is another 5-6 pounds by my DD first Bday party at the end of June! I need to do better on the diet part of it.

5 miles, 48 minutes.

Later I have a 2 hour ride, followed by another 15 minutes run.

Followed by a :drinking1 ...or two

Hi all!
Connie....
Beth...Yep, I'm on board! WooWoo!
Lisa..
Cindy..WTG with getting your runs in! I know what you mean about staying within WW points. My friend directed me to google "Wendie plan"--it's actually using WW points, but varying your point amount from day to day. I've found that WASA crisps are 2 for 1 point with Alouette cheese at 2 TB for 1 point(the light kind) are a great snack and when put with the WW progresso soup (it's free) makes a great lunch for very little points.
AmyKab...:welcome: we're glad you're here.
Mike...that is diet coke that your smilies drinking, right?
Deb...I'm going to finish your RR tonight...you are so funny.
Take care all and have a great day.
