Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Thanks Debra. :goodvibes

Hey, where ya staying at WDW? We'll be at BCV in a week. Seems so far away... I'm sure I'll be packing Friday night. This trip is the first one I haven't planned anything, we'll see how it goes!

We're leaving Friday, too! You know, I have no idea where we're staying--other than it's on-World. DOOD has planned the whole trip as a "surprise" for my birthday. He only told me about it so that we could make flight arrangements. I'm usually the trip planner, so this experience is all new to me; and I've been so good. No snooping! I do know about two character breakfasts, though.

I take it you're usually the tour commando in your pack? Errr, family. So is this one of your regular trips and you're just playing it by ear?

That I will be just missing you folks...While I will be in WDW, I'll be working/entertaining/hustling for new business.

Although I plan on having a few "barley, hops and oat sodas" at Epcot in the world showcase.

Just finished a 45 minute swim; the chlorine was better, but not much...I just tried to concentrate on technique. I think the lessons are paying off.

Since I am about to get on a 3 hour conference call:

Positive thoughts for those and their families that need them.:flower3:

Congrats for all who are continuing to fight toward their goals!! :yay:

Up and attems and you can do its for those that might have fallen a bit short this week. I give you a quote from a local high school teacher who made a huge impression on all who met him .:thumbsup2

Good morning guys and pretty princesses.

Just a quick morning hello, to wish everyone super workouts today. I'm headed off to the gym for some miles and then the stretching. I'm still hovering around the 173 range, but the body fat keeps dropping. It's down to 10.2% this morning.

Eating was good yesterday. I have discovered an important truth about eating, that I had heard but never tested: You really do feel full quicker when you eat slower. My baked potato and small chilli at Wendy's, for lunch at the mall was plenty, normally I would have had a big sandwich or a salad also.

Can't wait for the ToT so I can party with my beer drinking buds and the interesting, beautiful, exciting princesses of the WISH Team. My princess will be healed up by then so it will be a celabration of health, happiness and new beginnings.

We are doing the Marathon in January this time and will probably do Goofy again in 2010. We have the 2008 Goofy in the bag but we will be doing it again.

Ok Dave back away from the computer and get your tech gear on for the gym, the battle with the pudge cells awaits.

Debra, we've been going down about three to four times a year since we joined DVC. I'm kinda burned out from planning. I've always been the one who plans and packs everything. This trip I just decided we'd wing it. I did get us Pirate and Princess Party tickets for one night and booked a few ADRs. I hope I don't regret that, we'll be there for seven nights. We might get tried of eating counter service very quickly. :lmao:

Your trip sounds great! How fun not to even know where you're staying! I hope you have an awesome birthday! Make sure to get a birthday button and wear it your whole trip! :wizard:

Good afternoon Meaner! Not many around today, I see. I hope that everyone is having a good weekend. I went out for a bike ride, but I don't think running will happen today. My back really hurt this morning.....just tying my shoes! I want to run 12 miles tomorrow, so I think I am resting today.

Eating is way off today. I can't seem to get it together. I need to get myself in the game again. To many cravings hitting me at the same time. Sugar, and salt thing....:confused3 :confused3 I haven't stepped on the scale for a week......I will on Monday. I am sort of disappointed, but not to bad. I feel ok with things, but I will have to get into gear again.

Debra: Your trip sounds like a good time.....would you like to take me too?:lmao: I would love a vacation!

WWDave: You have done a great job controlling your portions.....can you teach me how???

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Beth

Dave: Great news on the BF%. That's near or getting near your fighting, er, racing goal, isn't it? I've been meaning to ask, how Erica is doing? Pain-free & recovering quickly, I hope.

It sounds like you two are roughly on the same cycle as DOOD & I are. We're also doing the marathon in 2009 & the Goofy in 2010. We don't run together, except in spirit or on side-by-side TMs, because he's so much faster than I am. And on race days, I wouldn't want to hold him back or have him be frustrated--he likes to test himself. So I kiss him goodbye at the corrals & we see each other at the finish. Knowing he was there kept me going in January.

Mike: Enjoy the networking, the entertaining, the wheeling & dealing. I can't think of a better place than WDW to do it in. Hopefully you'll be able to squeeze in a little R&R too.

Shan: Thank you for the b-day wishes. I hope your low-key, unplanned week is low-key & a refreshing change of pace. If you see someone in a lime-green hoodie, it might be me!

Beth: Ouch with the back? Did you do something to it, that you know about? I find that the bike is almost as bad as running for me when my back hurts, so I hope you took it easy. About the eating...it sounds like you're aware of what you're temptations are--and I'm a sugar/salt combo person who will not mention her favorites out of respect for you--and are dealing with it. You've given yourself a reminder about your Monday weigh-in, which sounds to me like a deadline? I've been there, too many times to count, but try not to be too disappointed.

Remember, you've had lots of stress lately and I think your body is trying to tell you to take care of those emotional needs as well--now, the eating thing might not be the best way to do it, but it IS comforting. And combined with some bike riding (good exercise) and a 12 miler tomorrow (hopefully), I"m sure it will all balance out. So I hope you don't beat yourself up over it. Keep moving forward and know that you are strong. I admire all your progress.

Lean Meaners: I hope you're enjoying the day & the weekend!

As for me: Today was a long, leisurely XT day followed by some pedestrian walking. DOOD's been in an all-day undergraduate conference, chairing panels & listening to papers, so I treated myself to lunch out. Nothing extravagant--soup & salad from Panera. But it felt good to be among the hustle & bustle of my neighborhood, browse the bookstore, and be in the sunshine after WO. Tonight we're going to the movies--how predictable of us--to see Run, Fat Boy, Run. We figure we'll find it funnier than most people, even the much-reported blister on the foot scene. (If you haven't yet heard of it, the movie's about a slacker who decides to win back his ex-GF by running a marathon. It stars Simon Pegg of Shaun of the Dead.)

Debra, although Erica and I are both racewalkers we are at much different levels. Marathon pace for her is 13:30 when she is moving but the last 2 marathons we have done she has had to stop so much for Potty and over heating breaks that we ended up about 15:30. We are working on these concerns.

Her hot flashes are tons of fun when it's over 80 degrees and bright sun on the Disney course. For her to do really well right now we need a cooler day, about 50s.

I walk every step with her though and we cross the finish line together holding hands over our heads. When she has to stop I stay with her till she is better and we press on.

When we do shorter races that have a walk catagory for awards, 10K on down then we race seperately since I might have a chance of winning. I always win my age group and uaually first second or third overall. Last year when we did the ToT, I had won a 10K walk race the weekend before. I was feeling it that week before the ToT when we were walking lots of miles at WDW.

Please tell me how the movie is, we will go if it's good.

Erica goes in on the 11th of april for her bunion surgery, both feet. Then she will be off for 4 weeks. She is having pain right now with them that keeps her form training.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Dave: I hope Erica's surgery and recovery are routine, noneventfull and FAST!

Shan: Have a great week!

Howdy Howdy Howdy to all fellow lean meaners!!!

Yesterday I was nearly blinded by a bright burning yellow ball in the sky...I thought I might be having a Moses moment...and when I realized it was the sun, I decided it was an early senior moment.

Anyway, I got here early and cruised through downtown Disney for a few hours, sat by the House of Blues and had not one but TWO beers, and then came back to the swan. Walked around there for a while, went back to my room to nap (I forgot how tired beer makes you in the afternoon) and had just about decided to completely blow off the day.

Well, I got to thinking about all the lean meaners fighting toward their goals, and I decided to be one of them for another day; only 60 minutes on the elliptical, but its WAY better than the nothing I was going to do....

Thanks for being there to help hold me accountable to myself folks!

Mike

P.S. Since I haven't found the laundry facilities, I've been doing this :laundy: in the room...

Mike, when I do track intervals, I usually start before dawn and when the sun comes out I actually feel stronger and seem to think more clearly, like a cover was lifted off of me. Weird feeling the first time it happened. Like you said it was almost a Moses moment.

Thank you, I'll do my best to help her recover and come back stronger than ever.

Today is basicly a rest day, I did a mile and a half of brisk walking while waiting for Erica to get off so we could do breakfast at Bob Evans. My usual veggie omlet and potatoes, no cheese or holinday sauce and none of the wonderfull sasuage.

Walk/Run/Rest strong everyone.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Debra: I do the same thing with my hubby. Althought nothing would please me more than to complete an event with hubby by my side, it's just not meant to be. Overall our pace is similar, but our styles are different. I usually walk every step. I try to be as consistent as I possibly can, slowing down only for water stops. John likes to incorporate some running into his routine so his pace varies throughout even though we usually jockey back and forth. I envy couples like Dave & Erica and Robert & Linda who stay together during the entire event. I do much better with Nancy, who is a walker-only like I am, and we both have a similar pace. What's really funny is that we live far apart and have never even trained together once. I guess we just like to talk!

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful day.

3.5 miles this morning. It was nice to get outside, even though the pollen is still terrible.

Shan and Debra – Have fun at the World.

Mike – Drink a beer for me please.

Beth – Hey!

Jeanneg – Hey!

WWDave – Hope Erica’s surgery goes well and she heals up quickly.

:)

Hi Lean Meaners!

Debra! How fun! I want to go along too!!!! I am also the travel planner, but I like it. LOL

ShanWish I could be there, to meet you!

JeanneAt least you have a particpatory hubby. If I can't get Katwalks or a granbaby or SIL to go, I go alone. :guilty:

I haven't been around much, I'm sorry. I was just so frustrated with me, I was about to become an old lady who did nothing but cook and sit around because if I have to be fat, then I might as well enjoy it! Or I was thinking I would need to hire a dietician and personal trainer to figure this thing out , but the money it would cost....200 miles round trip to see them! Those choices seems all wrong somehow, so I bought a Bodybugg. Amazingly, it works, I have lost a pound a week the last two weeks. I am quite happy with a pound a week, considering I have been fighting this for two years! Gain a few, lose a couple, gain a few, lose a few, gain 'em right back, etc.

The stuff Lisa told us about needing to cut 500 calories a day post menopause is pretty much right on! It's probably really close for most people. I had a partial hysterectomy at 29 so my calorie drop wasn't quite so bad, just 300 calories. But I had been trying to use all the different mathematical models and I just plain don't fit neatly into any of them. But I think this little gadget will make the difference.

Have a great weekend! Connie

Good afternoon Meaners.....nice to see some of you coming back to post. We missed you Connie!

Good day today......eating well and got 10 miles in today. Feeling good, but my back is still an issue. I almost didn't run today. I pulled something in my back yesterday tieing my shoe of all things......though my back has been really stiff and sore for a week or so. I have to be careful. I have had several back injuries since becoming a nurse 20 years ago, so I have to listen to it and take care. I took my run slow.....about 12 min miles. My back was stiff, but I did ok.

Connie: Glad to hear of the 2 pound weight loss.....I know what that means. I would rather be consistent, and lose a pound or two a week. I hate the ups and downs.

WWDave: I hope Erica does well with her surgery.....up and around soon!

Mike: Good job getting a workout in. It's hard to get it done when your away.

Hope everyone has a good Sunday.

Beth

Survived my first half marthon this morning!

So far, I've eaten pretty bad today. Went out and had Mexican for lunch and now we're about to go eat at The Varsity. (And that is not healthy! )

I promise to get back on track tomorrow morning!

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend! :goodvibes

Don't sweat the Mexican lunch, (unless it is from the jalopenos!) you burned some serious calories and you need them back for your recovery!!!

More than that.....CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR FIRST RACE, SHAN!!!!

Dave: I don't know why I thought Erica had her surgery already. Probably conflated it with Robert's. She must be very frustrated right now to be sidelined just as the weather gets nice. :sad1: I do hope it goes well & she recovers quickly--is 4 weeks a long time for such surgery? I just know that you'll be beside her every moment you can be.

Good job on the veggie omelet eating and w/o the sausage--now, that's my kind of breakfast! I have to admit, though, that I ate vegetarian sausage links today! Mmmmm.

As for Run Fatboy Run (got my spelling right now!), I know several WISHers liked it. But here's where my critical personality comes in--that thing that my ILs see as negative. ;) I didn't like the movie very much, nor did DOOD. The best I can say is that it was cute, but very sitcomy & predictable; still, neither of us will remember much about it in a couple of weeks. And, for my money, there wasn't enough running in it. And remember that I see dozens of films a year--I'm not exaggerating--between movie theaters, film festivals, conferences, my Netflix queue and my iPod at the gym--so I'm not exactly an average movie-going audience. I have a feeling that most people don't look at movies the same way I do. So to be fair, I think most people, especially runners, would find it an enjoyable flick.

Mike: Woo hoo for burning off the afternoon, beer-induced sleepies with elliptical time. Especially because I know how much you love the elliptical! :teeth: I hope you find that laundry room soon! Oh, and how's the Swan; I hope to hear reports on it when you return.

Jeanne: I, too, look on couples who race together with envy (also happiness, as I know you do). I see those pictures of couples crossing the finish line together, holding hands, and I think, "Awwwww." And then I think I'd be too sweaty to want to touch even DOOD's hand. Ewwww. :rotfl: I'm really glad you and Nancy have found good race partners in each other--although I am surprised you don't train together, I don't know why. What, pray tell, do you find to talk about on race day? (I don't think I have the brains to carry on a conversation at such times.)

Vic: Sorry to hear about the pollen, and hope it doesn't affect you too badly. That 3.5 miles isn't too shabby, though. :thumbsup2 I don't know about Mike, but I'll have a beer in your name when I'm at WDW. (Or maybe some spirits--I can't drink beer.)

Connie: Yay, you're back! I'm so glad your BodyBugg seems to be doing what it's supposed to. I'm not quite as happy to know Lisa's information was correct (not that I doubted her, but you know what I mean). And your pound a week is great news! I hope you'll have time to tell us more about how the bugg works.

Beth: 10 miles, and with your back stiff. Wow. I would imagine that your profession makes you susceptible to back injuries. I hope you're not feeling too sore right now and it doesn't interfere with your training. And you're eating well--going into your week strong. :cool1:

Shan: First, congratulations on the 1/2 marathon. I'll check out your other threads to see if you posted details, but I just know you did well. :) As for the eating, c'mon! I think you deserve a little feasting to commemorate the occasion. Tomorrow, though, it's back to training--right?

As for me: DOOD didn't go with me to the gym today, as he went out running (unplanned day) with a university colleague who's recovering from an injury. So while I was at yoga, etc., he was running in Frick Park on a beautiful sunny day. (I took a walk later on.) I have to admit, it was weird that DOOD agreed to run with his colleague, because his colleague's current pace is no faster than mine--and DOOD won't run with me even in training. :confused3 I don't know that I want him to, either, but it's strange.

In other news, tomorrow is weigh-in day & I'll be curious to see what happens. I've increased my calorie intake a few hundred calories each day (carbs & proteins) to jive with this book I'm reading. I want to see if 1) it's more accurate for my needs than SP; 2) if it addresses my daily energy level and, on running days, my fatigue; and 3) still allows me a comparable weight loss. Now, since I've only been losing 1-1.5 pounds every OTHER week, and this week would be a no-loss week, it'll be hard to tell. But I figure if I don't gain anything, I'll stick with the plan for another couple of weeks. Btw, I hope to post more information from the book when I get a chance.

Awesome job on your run, Shan!:cheer2:
Debra...I'm envious of your upcoming trip. How fabulous that your husband is planning the whole thing!!!!! You are his princess.:princess: When is the actual big day?
Mike..Hope you're having fun wheeling and dealing, drinking and ellipticaling:lmao: Lucky dog.
Beth...Nice job on the 10 miler.
Dave...Erica will heal quickly with you by her side.
Hi Jeanne, Connie, Vic:goodvibes

I got in my long run of 6 miles on Friday. I seem to do fine for anything under 3, but once I hit 3+miles I seem to do better with a run6/walk 1 ratio. My time actually improves, so I'm thinking this may be my new strategy for the 1/2 marathon. Has anyone else converted from a run to a run/walk and found that they're a much happier runner?
Have a great day all.!

:cheer2: SHAN:cheer2: First half marathon, :yay: Bet it's not gonna be your last either.

Debra, the movie "Run Fat Boy Run" is probably like Monty Pythons 'Holly Grail" it's much better after a few beers. We will have to try that theory out sometime.

Tomorrow starts a new level in my base building. I'm coming off a case of achillies tendonitis that I went into after the Goofy, so I'm back to the building phase before going into hard training.

Mon/Tue/Wed each week I'll be adding weights to my workout. So normal routine will be 4 miles fartleck on tready or outside depending on the weather, my stretching and Cals routine then weight training. The other weekly workouts will be LSD day, Speed inervals day and easy 4 miles day.

By July I should be starting to see some good results.

Have a wonderfull evening y'all
