Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Tracey: Good job with the TM and strength training. I hope you, too, had a great weekend, with warm weather.

Beth: 15 pounds!! I just knew your body was paying attention to all your efforts. It sounds like just the boost you need, given everything that's going on. I do hope everything else in your life is (at least) stable. You're doing great and I love hearing your progress. And I'm so glad you were able to run outdoors--just lifts the mood!

Jeanne: Thanks for the link on the video's background; I wondered how much of it was made using miniatures. I always love to read that stuff. (Oh, and Michael Leviton reminds me of a guy I used to hear play when I was in college, Wally Pleasant. Not sure why.) I've not seen Night Tide, so that goes in the Netflix. I do appreciate the rule about not using camera techniques that weren't available in 1955; a little insider challenge. Okay, I have to ask the ubiquitous NYC question: has he worked for Law & Order?? :rotfl: (Apparently I have no problem hijacking the thread. ;) )

Dave: Flag Football Streaking??? Sounds like an easy way to score points--at least with the spectators!

Lisa: How was the tourney? (And the drive? :crazy2:)

Vic: WTG on the run & the pace. I'd give you credit for the weather, too, if I could! I'll keep my fingers crossed for a blister-free race for you.

As for me: Wow, Saturday was a long day....We got up early to go to the gym--freezing rain--before the Oscar marathon. Let me just say that it was a bit of a hash, but I put in some time & miles; I also learned to stick to my rule about not running for an hour after I'd eaten. :rolleyes2 But on for the good news. I made it through the Oscar event--all 5 movies without a break as it turns out DOOD wanted to see them all once we got to the theater (bragging rights, I guess). I did it without having ANY popcorn. I stayed within my SparkPeople calorie range, ate the right number of servings of fruit & veggies, dairy & protein, and only ate a LEETLE junk food with the last movie (so no feelings of deprivation). During the breaks, I walked up and down the steps, which caused other movie-goers to stare at me. But I didn't care, I was working my calves and I only had 20 minutes to go to the restroom & stretch.

And most importantly, we enjoyed ourselves. Sure, we were sore the next day, and my knee is stiff. (I also didn't go to yoga today, because we had a substitute, the woman from the other class whom I didn't like/respect as an instructor.) But it was fun being surrounded by other film geeks, all passionately opinionated about the films we say. So we'll be doing it again next year. :cool1:

But because it's not just about me, here's some thoughts about why the marathon day of watching movies went so well. I believe these strategies will work in various situations where someone is stuck in one place & has to be sedentary:
  1. I made sure I worked out before the event, squeezing in as much activity as possible before settling in for the day.
  2. I planned my entire eating day, right down to the need for snacks. Because I was in a theater, I had no chance to wing it or change my mind; that meant I really needed to be conscious of what I ate--not just look through my cupboards.
  3. Everything, including DOOD's food, was portioned out. I knew exactly how much I was eating & I couldn't eat more unless I bought it. (And I'm cheap.)
  4. I ate mini-meals, which resulted in me not getting hungry and/or longing for the concessions stand.
  5. I brushed my teeth between movies, which mean I really had to ask myself if I was hungry before I dove into my stash.
  6. I tried to remain active whenever possible. I treated the breaks as opportunities to stretch, walk, and climb stairs, not as opportunities to check my cell phone or even talk about the movies with DOOD. Although I was still sore, I can't imagine what I would have been like if I'd just slumped in the seats or headed for the concession stands.
  7. And this is is the big one: I got the support & advice my dearest WISHers. :upsidedow Your ideas helped make the day a Lean Meaner success! The food options, the portion sizes, the floss...all these ideas helped me maintain my commitment to a fun day and one which was as healthy as possible.

Streaking pandas...:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :sad2: Must have been before the adult supervision.....

I found a quote in my running journal that I wanted to share with everyone:
"Never fear moving forward slowly, fear standing still." :flower3:

Have a great day everyone, I am headed 2.5 hours South to NH for a day long field hockey tournament. :cheer2:

Yes this was before Erica took on the responsibility. There have been times when she just shook her bowed head and told people, "I don't know him".

Vic, it is a good way to meet women. Especially the ones in blue uniforms.

Ok scampering off now.

Walking Pandapirate:

PandaDave: My DH is famous for saying, if my wife ever figures out why she loves me, she will run like heck. :scratchin Hmmmmmm.......

Debra: Good for you with the movie challenge. Looks like you definitely can put that one in the win column. Your strategies were awesome and you did well holding to the plan!!! ::yes::

All you people who can run/walk outside:  I think I can finally do it today...yep...today...uh huh, uh huh.....:hyper:

The hockey tourney was great competition. I have to brag about DD13. She put on her goalie pads for the first time in a game yesterday and they played the elite team first. She was nonstop shots on goal for 25 minutes and they scored 10 on her. She came off really discouraged but put her pads back on for the next 3 games and got better each time. By the last game, no one was scoring on her :furious: Well actually they did get 1 but that was it. She was a trooper for sure...and ready for the next tourney April 12-13 at UNH. :sad2: She has YMCA gymnastics states competition the weekend afterward. Busy, busy, busy but an awesome athlete to watch. Okay, done patting myself on the back!!!

Today is a new week Lean Meaners. Take it with a vengence. I hope for weight loss for all who want it, miles for those who feel the urge to move and support for all those who are in need. :grouphug: Have a great week!!

Lisa, my princess loves me because she likes a life on the wild side. Life is to short to settle for boring and mondane.

Our first date I took her cliff in Okinawa, with a light house at the top, the light shinning out over a wild sea. Waves crashing almost to the top of the high cliff, everything aglow from so many stars in the unpolluted sky. As I held her hand I threw my old wedding ring off the cliff to the savage sea. As a ritual of starting a new life. She never went home from that first date and we have been together for going on 23 years.

Once you go panda you never go back:)

Anyway, today is a test day, I've been rehabing my achillies for a few weeks now and today I'm taking Erica for a 4 mile brisk walk to see if I can walk without pain from the tendon.

Have an awesome day y'all.

Walking Pandapirate:

Dave: Sending you extra pixiedust: today for a good safe and pain-free walk. I really hope you get back on the right track soon.

I have been with DH for 16 years. He was my first real date after my divorce and he was such a sweetie, I never left his side again either. He had already built the home that we live in but was not living in it yet. Within 3 weeks, we were moved in on plywood floors with minimal furniture. Hmmm...maybe he is part Panda too. I will have to check when he calls in.

Best wishes and pixie dust to you Dave. Here's to a healthy paw...:drinking: (that's water, too early for beer o'clock).

Oh my goodness... I don't check in for a few days and we've a naked panda running around! :scared1: :lmao:

Hope everyone had a good weekend! I got in my 3.5 M run yesterday! All of it was running except for 10-15 sec. STUPID NUMB FEET! ugh! I felt really good though. I never felt like I needed a walk break. I'm still playing w/ that one pound, but I really hope to be back on track this week. I totally fell of the bandwagon last week w/ movie popcorn, snickers... This week...Got to get serious! I am currenlty and XL kinda shirt girl...I need to be a M by January...why you ask...That's what I put down on my 1/2 marathon registration! :scared: High Hopes... and I am feeling a bit scared about this since I've really only done a 5K. I do hope to complete teh Minnie successfully, but at this point, my longest run is oh....3.5 miles! :scared1:

Debra! Glad to see you survived!! You did much better than me w/ the popcorn!

Lisa...Great news about your daughter! That's aweseome!!!

Vic...How you feeling??? I am so jealous of your weather! Sounds like you had a great run!

Beth...yay for running outside!!! Great news on the 15lbs!!! What an accomplishment! Congrats!

Panda...Your flag football story had me laughing out loud. at work! how funny!!! pixiedust: for your leg!

Awe, Lisa, so glad you have found the Panda of your dreams.princess:

We are off soon to do our test walk. Erica has issues with a bunion on her left foot. As soon as my dental adventure is over she is going to make an appointment with a doc in Nashville for bunion surgery. We have no one good here in Bowling Green. When you work in health care you learn who the most skilled doctors are. When you are an athlete, the better the skill of the doctor the better the long term results and the quicker the recovery.

Good morning, all.
Beth::cool1: 15 lbs. Awesome job!!! And congrats on getting outside to run.
Panda:Streaking flag football:thumbsup2 Perfect way to distract the other team. I'm still new here. So what's up with the "red shorts"? I'm curious.
Debra:Sounds like a great movie day. Great job sticking with your plan and even walking stairs between movies.
Lisa:WTG for your daughter and her job as goalie:cool1: I love watching my kidlets in their sporting events. So "pat" away....you should be a very proud mama. It takes alot of courage to strap those goalie pads on.
Vic:WTG on the 7 miles and good time too. I'm jealous of the nice weather. It's been rough here for awhile now. We drive through Niceville on our way to Destin. Looks like a beautiful place to live. The high school looks like a perfect setting for Friday Night Lights. And so close to the beach......lucky you!:)

If we're sharing spouse stories. My DH and I met in Jr. high and started dating when we were 16 and 17. We dated for a long time to get through college and had our 15th wedding anniversary last year. High school sweethearts:love:
I got out on Satuday and walked a few miles. I took my dog, who loves to run, but when he runs he pulls me along. Then yesterday, we had a quick storm blow through and drop another 1 1/2 inches of snow and now more is coming tonight. :sad2: I am so ready for spring.
Sunday is my day off and today I'm back on the treadmill. That's ok though, my MIL is watching my little guy all day and the 3 older guys are back at school today. So I'll be able to run without telling Timmy to stop throwing his Hot Wheels on the TM. He loves to watch them fly off the back, but they're really hard to dodge while I'm running.:rotfl:
Have a great day all.:goodvibes

Tracey, I don't think that Tiger Lily would want me to post the pics of the red shorts again. It was a picture of the Itialian bike team for the Tour de France. The red spandex left nothing to the imagination as the mans anatomy. I'm sure that Bill saved it so he may be convinced to show it.

Innocent as the new fallen snow Panda;)

Good morning Lean Meaners!!! This thread is off and running this morning!!!

WWDave: I am sending you some extrapixiedust: for your walk today! I hope it goes well and your tendon is healthy!

Debra: You did good girl! You saw your challenge, and went for it! You did an awesome job and we are proud of you!

Lisa: I am glad the field hockey tournament went well. Tell your dd that all the WISHers are proud of her efforts! :cool1: :cool1:

I had a good weekend and when I weighed myself today, I am the same as Saturday ((((which I am happy about))))). Still down 15!!!! I thought maybe it was wrong on Sat, but I am happy to report that I am counting it official!:thumbsup2 :cool1: :thumbsup2

I got two days outside running this weekend which has brightened my mood a great deal!

Beth

OMG, all this time I thought they were POLE-ish.....:rotfl:

Clearly, there are some WISH folks who cannot be allowed in polite society...Good thing there's nothing polite about us!:rotfl2:

Ok, so I did my long walk yesterday, my exercise is coming along great. I know this sounds nuts, but I swear I need a "food challenge". The miles/hours is happening for me because of the team. I really think I could get it together if I was on The Biggest Loser, or some type of food challenge. WW on my own does not seem to be motivating me. Maybe we could try a healthy challenge of the week, with some good habits we're all striving for (drinking water, # of snacks, eating after 8pm, that type of stuff). Does this interest anyone? It wouldn't have to be a full-blown competition, just this week we're all going to work on _____, and then we report how we did. Just a thought. I am really struggling with the food stuff, and I need to do something to get myself on any track!::yes::

Those are my thoughts for now.

Maria that is a wonderful idea. Why don't you start it and I'll help.

Maria...Awesome idea....that could be exactly what I need. Count me in.:)

Maria, this is a GREAT idea. We all need help staying on track and the support would be wonderful.

Good morning pretty princesses.

In a few days it will be time for the team captains to post how their team has done for Febuary. It will be interesting to see how everyone is doing. To carry Maria's idea a bit further we can have a weekly team challange to add or subtract one thing from or to their healthy eating plan.

All of our WISH prince and princesses can look at their own plans and make necessary tweeks to make healthy.

Sunday I had a family come in to the store to "price" glassess. They refused to pay for scratch protection and UV protection unfortunately for them we don't sell lenes that are not scratch protected and that don't protect the patient from UV damage.

Please guys if you wear glasses buy polycarb lenes. A plastic lenes will shatter very easy but a poly lens can be beaten with a hammer and not break. Also a poly lens blocks 100% of the harmfull UV rays and is also thinner and lighter than a plastic lens. The average cost of poly over plastic is $20 with insurance $50 without.

I know off topic but eye protection is a part of the healthy lifestyle.

Hi Everyone!

It's going to be a busy day at work, so I wanted to get a quick post in. I love the idea of adding/subtracting as part of the weekly challenge -- I just wasn't sure most people would need/want to do that. I understand that we all have our own issues, but just to keep us somewhat together, could we designate whether it's an add or subtract week? Then people could post what they are adding or subtracting. It might give others (ok, me) ideas to try something new. I think that's a great way to keep it interesting.

The Panda could float the idea, and if captains/teams want to do it, we could start March 1st. I like the overall idea of every month we add a little something to the challenge (even if it's unofficial). That would keep it fresh as we go.

Let us know what you think!:goodvibes
Maria

We could have a nutrition thread that tracks each one of our goals for the month and then at the end of the month, if you attain your goal you get assigned a point value. If you maintain this you get a lesser value monthly and if you set and attain a new goal, you continue on in this manner say:

Attain March goal = 1 point
Continue March goal =.5 point

And the group leader would keep track of this total. At the end of the miles challenge game (i.e. December 31), the leader would add up your points and if you are on a "team" you would be assigned a miles and/or hours value that you can add to your year total.

Now that I get this out, it sounds kind of complicated. Maybe someone else has an idea that will make it less so. I think this is worth considering as an add on bonus to the miles challenge game as most of us are playing. I think the miles challenge is valuable in that we get out and move our bodies as we are held accountable. I also think that the nutrition aspect of all around fitness is equally as valuable and we need to be held accountable for that also if we are to be further motivated in our fitness.
