Beanie Babies

Just did the spring cleaning of my attic this past weekend and came across bags of Beanie Babies my kids had collected (well, actually had given to them by out of control Aunt!!!). I know a while back they were all the rage for collectors but are they worth anything now?? If so, how do I value them? If not, should I put them out for the dump?

For the most part they aren't worth much, if anything. You might check ebay on some of the more collectable ones.

Rather than put them out to the dump or goodwill I would suggest donating them to a children's hospital, if you have one nearby. The kids love them and the hospital can always use them. Another idea is to give them to your local fire/police department. They keep them in the trunk of their cars to give to kids that are involved in accidents and such.

I have a drawer in my office for my students' kids. My daughter had a few beanie babies that she no longer wants so rather than trying to sell them at my garage sale, I bought them from her for my "drawer". I used to stock it with McDonald's toys but since I've quit eating happy meals , I had to think of something else.

I myself collect the bear Cinders and have purchased beanie babies for up to 5.00 on Ebay. I'll spend as much as 10.00 or a little more on a beanie buddy Cinders. Of course, they are like children to me.
It appears that the beanie babies still do well on Ebay even if the prices are no longer sky high.

I agree donate them. Do they still have the tags on them? The Childrens hospital here in my area only takes new with tags (for obvious reasons, germs, etc). My Mother had a ton of beanie babies and boyds bears, when she passed I donated most of them to the childrens hospital. Since they still all had tags and weren't played with they took them.

We just cleaned out the attic as well and found 3 boxes full of older beanies and some Disney. They weren't worth much so I have decided just to put them in an old curio cabinet I have and display them. They are cute and the Disney ones are really cute!

There was a website that had addresses you could send Beanies to soldiers that were overseas to give out to the kids there. I meant to write it down and forgot to. Apparently they are easy to carry with them and if they see a child, they are thrilled to get a toy. Our children's hospital will only accept new and "newly purchased" stuffed toys. I listed groups of mine on Ebay and they did not sell. Bears, Rabbits, dogs, cats, etc. I also had three years worth of Teenie Beanies still wrapped that did not sell.

I have over 300 Beanie Babie bears including many of the international bears. I've thought about selling them, but they just aren't worth much. I tried donating some in the past to the local children's hospital. They didn't want them. They said they had hundreds of them.

I tried selling mine at two flea markets. I tried selling them for $3.00/each or 4/10.00. I probably only sold about ten of them.

Can you get a receipt to take this off on your taxes if you donate them to a Children's Hsopital? This was one of the things I had planned to do this summer while on break from school.

I found a bunch of Beanies and Buddies when I was Spring cleaning too! I couldn't believe how many I had ... I like the hospital donation idea. I will have to make a couple of calls to see if anyone wants them. The tax receipt would be a nice bonus if they offer it.

Brandi, do you notice if the Beanies sell better individually or as a lot? If the hospital donation idea doesn't work out, I will put mine up on eBay. The lot seems like it would be easier to list than doing each individually but I would do whichever sells better TIA!

I donated a bag full to my DS's school about a year ago. They used them as AR rewards (that is Accelerated Reader). The little kids K-2 really enjoy them and even some of the 3-5 were excited about them .

Edited to add: We only donated the ones that were not played with. The ones he played with, he kept so we still have about 10.

My husband and I each had one of the Disney Store exclusive Mickey dressed like a castmember. We sold his once he quit for $200, but we didn't sell mine because I still worked there and we didn't want to break any rules. I haven't worked there in quite a while and I really wish I would have broken the rules because I still have that cm Mickey.

I've sent a lot of my old ones with my son; he's a paramedic, and he stocks the ambulances with them to give out to injured or scared children.

I sent all my Beanie Buddies to the local women's and children's shelter. I don't know where it is, but my daughter has a friend who volunteers there and we sent them by her.

You know I would be more than willing to sale the 300 plus we have. But I do not think it would even be worth the effort that is why I thought to donate them to a children's hospital, but I really want to get a receipt for them.

If you don't get a receipt, make your own. Take a pic and write the value amount. You would not have to show a receipt on your taxes unless you get audited. If you donate more than $500 worth of something at a time, you have to do an additional form.

Do you have a military unit near you or a NG unit deployed or know of anyone deployed? We send my dh tons of beanies and teddy bears. They give them to the children to help keep the peace and to give them something that will keep them from running towards their vehichles. They can throw them far out the window.

I knew my buddies on the Dis would show me the way. The Beanie Babies will be on their way to Iraq next week. A husband of one of the girls in my office is in the NG and stationed over there. Figured I could help promote harmony and peace no matter how small the contribution.

We also took along a huge box of beanies when we went on a mission trip to Peru last year. We were traveling on the Amazon and each village we stopped at, we were able to give one to each child there. They were thrilled! (And didn't care one bit about collector's pricing ) Anytime you can bless others with your unwanted stuff, I say go for it!
