My mom fell in love with a five month old beagle today that she saw. Now she would like to get him, he is up for adoption.
Does anyone have a beagle or can give me advice for him?

**** update ****
My little brother and I went to get the 5 month old puppy this morning and he was gone. Someone came in last yesterday afternoon and adopted him :( We were so sad. We didn't want to go home and tell her, she was going to cry... she wanted that puppy so bad, named him Benny and everything.

So the lady saw all this and said, well I did just get in a beagle puppy but we wanted to wait through the weekend to put him up for adoption. Long story short, we brought the nine week old puppy home and she is in love agian. His name is Hunter and he is a doll. I'll post pics if and when I figures out how. Thanks for all the advise... I think this will be a great dog for my mom.

We had a beagle when I was a kid. She was a sweet dog, not much of a lap dog. If your mom is wanting a lap dog, my suggesting is my favorite. A miniature longhair dachshund.

They are sweet, wonderful pets and great with kids! Now, here comes the but............. they are howlers (big, loud full yowls which can really carry far) and they are hunters (so walking them is a constant 'pull their nose off the ground' and try to get them to walk. They are always ducking under trees and following their noses everywhere. Taking our beagle, Bagel, for a quick 'do-your-business' walk always turned into a long, slow stroll!) But they are loyal companions and great friends.

As I'm sitting here our neighbor's beagle is howling - he's been doing it for 2 years! It drives all the neighbors crazy! Oh ! He's cute also but not at 6 AM!!!!!

Well, as I sit here my Beagle, Beags, is laying by my feet....snoring! :p Many Beagles are barkers, BUT not all. Beags has had serious barking issues....he WON'T do it! Dh eventuallly stopped huting with him because he will NOT bark. To say that ALL Beagles howl and bark incessantly is just untrue. Consistant positive training will teach your Beagle to bark if/when appropriate. And as for following his/her nose, they sure do. But the same consistent positive training will make him/her a good leash walker.

Don't rule out Beagles..you'll only be losing out on a new best friend. ;)

i have a basset beagle hound . all she dose is sleep and beg treats they are heavy. don't sit on the floor they put their feet on you they heavey

We have a wonderful 9 yo beagle boy who we purchased at 5 weeks.

He does bark, but rarely howls. He only barks at other dogs coming near his property and strangers at the door. If he outside howling, I know something is really wrong (deer in the yard or servicemen in the yard).

Beagles are wonderful companions for an elderly person. How old is your mom? Does she have the patience to teach the beagle good habits and walk him ( they can be strong walkers)

Also, she must have a fenced in yard as they will run away otherwise.

One trait of the beagle breed I really like is that they are adapable little dogs.Ready to play if you want, go for a car ride, or take a nap if you're taking one.

also, most beagles are better off as house dogs, not outside. They do not like being alone and that's why some of them bark a lot.

herc.

I had a beagle growing up. They are pretty head strong dogs. They need consistent training or they'll walk all over you. They tend to wander and not stay in the yard due to their hunting instinct also. But I loved my little Cindi girl!

One thing no one's mentioned is that beagles are crafty little eating machines. We've had to put childproof locks on the refrigerator and pantry at my boyfriend's house -- he's broken into the pantry (because that's where we keep his food) countless times, and once we locked that he figured out how to get into the fridge. (And once ate a package of bacon, half of a birthday cake and leftovers from the steakhouse we ate at for our anniversary. We came home to the refrigerator door wide open and the dog laying on the floor with his feet up in the air and a blissful look on his face.)

Beagles are very smart -- too smart for their own good, sometimes. When Boomer was younger (probably until he turned 2), we couldn't leave him in the backyard unsupervised because he would dig out. Not just try to, he would actually dig out. (And then walk to the front yard, and stand around like, "Well, what do I do now?") They are often really stubborn, and can be kind of hard to train. Housebreaking was easy, good leash behavior was a little bit harder (all those tempting smells outside!), but repetition and a harness really helped out with that.

Regardless, they are sweet dogs. Always ready to cuddle with you on the couch, running up to say hi and sniff you the second you get home, and though they can be very active little puppies, once they've grown up a bit they are very relaxed and content to just lay around and nap all day. They are friendly and outgoing dogs who seem to fall in love with everybody.

We also have a beagle, she is a year and a half old. No howler here either. She barks sometimes, when she thinks something is in the yard or where playing with her, but thats it! I was never a animal person, but my son wanted a dog and I fell in love with her, she even sleeps with me, no one could believe I had a dog, let alone let one sleep with me. She is like one of my kids, I don't know what I would do if something happened to her.

We had one when I was little. I actually did my teething on her tail. (parents tried to stop me, but I insisted)

We got our Beagle at 6wks and she is now 5months. She is not a barker or a howler. She is very sweet. She loves to be with people. She'll sit on the couch with us snuggle. She also loves to be held. She is still a baby so she can be very energetic. She loves to jump and seems to target my 5yo DD. I've found that you need to be very firm with her(something the 5yo hasn't mastered yet). She is housebroken which took til she was about 4months. We have been using a crate to train her which we find works very well! She sleeps in there every night and during the day she'll go in the crate on her own. We potty her in the same spot in the yard so she always goes right to the spot and does her thing. She is not a good leash walker though. I'm sure she'll get better in time. Our yard is fenced but when we put her out in the yard we always put her on the run so she can't dig her way out. I think your mom will be very happy with a Beagle. PM me if you have any more questions.

I also have a 2 year old beagl that we got at 8 weeks....here is her list

1. She is a barker (doesn't help that we have a walking path run up the length of the house)..we are working on the barking
2. She is also very very smart. (when she was a puppy she moved the kitchen stool around so she could climb up my counters. took a few times before we figured out way she was standing on the counters when we got home)
3. She is also an eater....don't leave anything down or out cause it will disappear ( also the reason we have a 4 ft industrial trash can bungeed to a metal rack in out kitchen, otherwise she would have a trash strewn about the house when we returned)
4.She is wonderful with the kids
5. She is a snuggler, loves to sit with you, and on you.(Ours sleeps with one of the kids everynight...ususally under the covers; she'd sleep with me but one of the agreement when we got her was she couldn't be in DH's bed...unfortunatley I share a bed with DH so no doggy for me...)
6. She is so great that we are getting another beagle after christmas for my oldest son....can't wait...

BEAGLES are awesome

ps...don't let people tell you that invisible fences never work with beagles, ours has done great and our best friends have 2 that do fine with an invisible fence. Also, remember that puppies are lots of work and beagles are even more work...

I have 4 Beagles, and they are a constant source of laughter and pleasure around our house. I also had another beagle boy who died 3 years ago. Not one of my beagles has ever had a problem with howling or barking. They are inside dogs except when they go out into our fenced-in back yard to play or do their business. If they catch a scent, they may howl or bark momentarily, but ALL dogs bark and howl now and then.

Beagles are cuddly, loving, great with kids, and they're good watch dogs, too. They are very strong-willed and food-motivated. Your mom will need to put child locks on the trash cabinet. And beagles can never be outside if they're not on a leash or in a fenced-in area. But no dog should be left outside to roam unattended anyway, right?

We only ever bought one beagle (our 13 yr. old "Queen of the Universe," Wilma). The rest have been rescues. I always say God sends us beagles! They are lovely, devoted, wonderful companions. They are funny, smart, and spirited. Anyone who doesn't like beagles, doesn't understand dogs.

Make sure that her yard is fenced in. Our beagle Lilybug used to go into a mode which I called Tail up, nose down, brain gone. She was hit by a car, and was very affectionate. She would give us hugs by putting her paws on our shoulders and lick our face each night when we went to bed. She was a great dog.:wave2:

I have owned two beagles. I agree with a previous poster regarding beagles being head strong. Both of mine were. I thought it was just a personality trait with the first one. They are also very protective. Which is good and bad, good because no one will ever enter your house without having been "greeted" by them. Bad because when you walk them down the street they try to attack anything that moves, usually not people. My second beagle also learned to open our cupboard where we kept our garbage and made a couple of huge messes, that is until we installed a kiddie latch to keep him out.

Beagles are cute and I love to pet their velvety ears, although with the amount of training it takes to get them to behave appropriately, I would not have another one.

We have a border collie/kelpie mix now and she is the smartest most lovable dog I've ever owned.

Tell your mother good luck.
