My DD(4) just had her hair braided in Jamaica and I have a question for you experts.

We put a ton of sunscreen on her head to prevent burning, but now the beads are really gross and glunky (for lack of a better word!). They're actually sticky and dirty looking!

I've tried scrubbing them with her regular shampoo, but they won't come clean.

Any advise, as she's not willing to let me take them out yet?!?

I tried doing a search, but didn't find any other posts with this problem.

TIA!

Try white distilled vinegar. It is great for hair rinse so it may work. GOOD LUCK!

This sounds weird, but you might try a facial toner....anything you use should be fine. I put braids in my hair, but didn't like the feel of my scalp being 'dirty' someone told me to use toner to clean up the scalp and the bands if needed, and it works. I don't ussually use a facial toner, so picked up a cheap bottle...Suave, and it works great! Cleans it up nice, feels refreshing, and smells good (not like vinegar).

I tried the vinegar, but no luck. I'll try some toner tonight! I think I need to use something de-greasing, but I don't want to use pinesol or something like it on her hair!

 preb! I just had the funiest image of your little girl's hair smelling pine fresh and oh, so shiny!

Good luck!

Not sure if this would work, but when I was in high school in the 80's (c'mon girls... you remember the big hair and the hairspray), the only thing that would get out all the hairspray buildup was baking soda. Make a paste of the baking soda and a little bit of water, work it in some, and then rinse well.

Good luck!

OK,

So far we've tried:

Alcohol
Windex
Shampoo
White Vinegar
Lysol Cleanser
Eye Makeup Remover
Face Toner

Still no luck, but boy...does she smell fresh!!!

I'm off to make a baking soda paste...  :)

We don't have any Goo-Gone, but we did try Lemon Go-Jo, which my husband said is similar. No luck. No luck with the baking powder paste, either. We even tried scrubbing each bead with the paste on a toothbrush.

I'm going to put some dishsoap and warm water in a cup and dip the beaded ends in there to let them soak for awhile.

I can't believe we're the only ones who have had this problem!

Help!!!

Your DD must be very patient through this whole process!! My mom said to use lemon juice but her remedies are a bit strange. Hope you had better luck with the dish soap.

This happened to my DD. I honestly think the quality of the beads is really cheap, and what you are seeing is the bead 'breaking-down'. There's probably nothing you can do, as it's not a coating on the bead, but rather the composition of the bead changing. I would suggest just hanging in there as long as you can stand it, and then taking them out. When the beads were at the top of my DD's braids, (at the crown), we removed all. Once, she had the beads just at the ends of the braids, and I actually took the beads off and replaced them with new ones. Just a thought if this is an option.

After one week and one day I just removed our daughter's braids. Her beads looked dull and it looked like there was coating on them. I think it was where they hit her shoulders and theywere coated with sunscreen which rubbed off onto the beads. I have to agree with thebets57, I think the beads are just breaking down. I know sunscreen does a number on anything plastic and it will dull my OPI nail polish if I don't remove the sunscreen right away from my hands after applying the sunscreen. Kathy

yawn! I lay awake last night thinking of your problem and the best solution I could come up with was Haley. Every time my local PBS station needs donations they start a fund drive (I am sure it's the same everywhere) and just about I see this brittish guy, his last name is Haley. The show is called Haley's Helpful Hints or something like that. At least maybe, as a last resort you could try to find his website. He may have some help on there.
