We're planning on driving over to Kennedy Space Center while we're in Florida and were looking for a nice beach to do some strollin' and some sea shell collecting? Is there one in the neighborhood...

it's been 18 years since I've been to Orlando and we're going there in October (5th-14th) for our much belated honeymoon (YAY!!!!)

I'm sure I'll be popping up with numerous other questions, but this was a good place to start ;)

Well, it's been a while since I have been on the Atlantic side for shelling....we are usually at Sanibel Island off of Ft. Meyers, but that is about a 4 hour drive from Orlando. Try to do a search pulling up Cocoa Beach....I saw some posts earlier about decent hotels in the area. I wouldn't recommend Daytona for shelling;) all those cars on the beach!Congrats on the belated honeymoon and enjoy KSC. Sorry this wasn't much help...anyone else?

Unfortunately, you won't be Sanibel Island/Captiva Island for shelling. The Atlantic coast beaches offer a very poor second for finding shells, either on the beach or in the water.

If you can make the time, the 4-hour drive to Sanibel is worth it. Better yet, try booking a shelling cruise -- most are 1/2 day with lunch and you can find some wonderful shells.

We were on Cocoa Beach in May 2001 and did find some shells. Granted, not like the Gulf side, but it was enough to keep everyone busy and happy.

We discovered a section of beach right where the water met the sand that someone had been digging in and found a huge "shelf" of shells. All shapes and sizes, including some really big ones.

Good Luck

Unfortunately I don't have anything to add to the information with shells, but just had to say hi from someone who grew up in Esko, MN!! (What a small world after all!)

Have a great honeymoon!

Klait. I am thinking of going to Cocoa Beach for the day. Did you come from Disney?? Just wondering how long it took you to get there. We have never been to the beach there. How would we know where to go once we got to Cocoa Beach? My little girl also wants to look for shells. Thanks for the info. Anything else you could tell me about the beach would be great. thanks,,,corvair

Yes, we did come from Disney. It took us around an hour, maybe a little more. We did not really know where we were going either. We saw sveral public beach areas, but ended up by one where there was a 7-11 on the corner where we turned.

My 3 year old was determined that he was going to find shells and that was his sole reason for leaving Mickey. He found several of the smaller ones all over the place (smaller than dime size) and some bigger ones by the water....he was in his glory. Bought him a small shovel and pail from one of the little shops across the street and he had a great day.

Sorry I could not be any more specific.

Klait. thanks for your reply. It helped alot. Can you tell me alittle about the water? Were there waves. Big or little?? What color is the water?? thanks,, my DD really wants to spend a day at the beach. I am just wondering if the drive and losing a day of Disney is worth it. It sounds like you had a great time,,, Corvair

Corvair-

It was what I would call typical Atlantic water. It was Greenish-Blue and not at all clear with pretty big waves. Not what I would consider fun for my 3 year old, as a matter of fact, he was afraid of the water (Weird considering we have a cottage on the shores of Lake Superior and he is used to waves). He wouldn't even get too close after the first time he was in ankle deep water and the tide pulled the sand out from under him. It was rather windy that day though.

It was a nice day and we definately felt it was worth taking a ride and spending the day there. The beach itself was nice, sandy and beautiful. Not crowded. We did enjoy it more than Daytona Beach the year before.
