I believe it's all about the experience. We went there once and didn't really enjoy the meal or the dessert. I would much rather have Ghirardelli's ice cream. However, we thought it would be fun to try. Once we did, we never went back.
I think it's similar to a lot of the Disney restaurants, it's more experience than quality of food. We go to the Akershus every vacation...definitely not for the food...my daughter loves the idea of the princesses coming to the table. We went to Sci Fi Diner a couple of times...again, definitely not for the food...my son loved it...actually, this past vacation, he said that he didn't want to go there anymore...

was my reaction. We have tried most places with characters in them and are usually disappointed with the food. However, I think the biggest disappointment was the time we tried Garden Grill for the first time....we liked the experience and characters, but definitely not going back, the food was absolutely atrocious.
Anyways, back to the point. I think a lot of people go back to those restaurants because of the experience and maybe that's what the hype is all about. And of course, everyone has different tastes. For instance, everyone was raving about the School Bread at Norway and so I really wanted to try it. I, absolutely, did not like it. It just seems to be a large cream filled donut which was toooooo sweet. But when I tried the Dole Whip float, I loved it! I rave about it! Different people with different tastes.
