Beach Rental Carolinas

We've gone to the Outer Banks in NC every year for the past 11 years. We started in Southern Shores, then worked our way up to Duck and for the past several years have been at Buck Island in Corolla. All of those are north of the Wright Memorial Causeway that connects the islands to the mainland. Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and other areas are south of the causeway. Hatteras, Manteo, Avon, etc. are even further south than that and we have not stayed down there.

We like the northern areas better as they are less developed and less touristy than the areas south of the causeway. You can find a whole range of property types and sizes. We like Buck Island as the property has some nice amenities and is very close the grocery store and other shopping. It's more expensive than some other areas.

I have family (by marriage) who own a beach house at Surfside Beach. They have a website: www.seagift.org if you'd like to check it out. I have no idea of price or how easy they are to work with in terms of rental (ha! I don't even hardly know the family !!). The only thing I can really say with any certainty is I've been to the beach house and it is very nice and almost brand new.

This is the company we rented from for a family reunion 3 years ago. We got a beautiful 6 bedroom (plus den with sleeper sofa) home in Duck, 30-second walk to the beach, with a private swimming pool and ocean view. It was great!

A couple of things to remember: Many of these homes do not include linens, so you either bring your own, or rent them (we got ours from Money's Worth). They delivered them in a big bin, then on the last day, we put them back in the bin outside for them to pick up again.

Also, make sure the home has convenient beach access. Sometimes a house may be close to the beach, but access is blocked by private property.

Hilton Head offers a lot of rentals. We've rented from Coastal Home & Villa rentals. I think they may have merged and taken a ndifferent name. Also on HH is Sea Pines reality, as well a LOTS of others. Bald Head in NC is nice. Rent from Bald Head Island itself for that. I've also used Alan Holdn reality at Holden Beach. That is a little too laid back for me. Just a house and an ocean. I need tennis courts and pools and restaurants.

If you're looking for private and quiet, try Fripp Island in S.C. We own two small condos there -- both too small for your group. But there are plenty of large houses. Just search on vrbo,com.

She is very happy with them and her guests always give very positive feedback. We rented through them before she got her house and always had great experiences.

Seems like a lot of DISers are in the Outer Banks during the summer--we should try to organize a DIS meet!
