Beach Near L/A

While in LA we want to go to Santa Monica Pier in the evening and spend a day on the beach. Would you recommend the beach there during the day or drive to Malibu or another spot?

If there's a beach you're looking at in Malibu I'd probably drive there in the morning, start there and then hit SM Pier on the way back. You get 2 activities/locations that way.

Are there better spots for kids to be on the beach? Place to rent chairs/umbrellas since we won't have any of that?

There aren't really places with chairs already on the sand what you can rent in So Cal. Many hotels offer items for the beach like toys and chairs, you can try calling your hotel and ask.
