BCV gone to first come first serve for room assignments?

I posted this in my report on my stay on BCV, but since it was buried in there, I'm sure it was missed. Here is the quote of what I posted before. I'd love to hear some comments on whether this was an isolated incident or they are trying this out at BCV as well.

We checked in at 9:30, and upon check-in, we were told the resort was sold out and we would have to wait for a room. No problem there. The CM then said let me check what rooms are available for check-in today. She then read off all the studios available (they were four) and let me pick one. I of course choose the Epcot view, but was amazed that no rooms seemed to be assigned and I was able to choose my room. Is it possible that BCV is going to the first come first serve basis on room assignment? We made our ressies only 4 months in advance so I made no requests on my ressie as to location, since I figured I had no hope of getting them.

Lori,

I believe this is taking place at all DVC resorts within WDW. I don't think it affects OKW too much simply due to its size, but from what I have heard it is not when you reserve the room, but when you arrive.

I think this stinks because what is the point of putting down your preferences if the chance remains if you arrive too late for check-in that room will be gone.

We are relatively new to DVC (about 1.5 years) and based on the track record so far it looks like we may get 3 visits (maybe 4) a year staying Sunday through Thursday nights. We've stayed mostly at BC so far (one night at HH) and we've never asked for specific rooms or locations prior to arrival. Each time the CM's have tried to honor our location requests and sometimes we get what we want and other times we haven't.

With that said, it's a very interesting question and I'll be reading all responses. I wonder if things are changing where this is concerned. I've gotten the impression that when DVC was new and isolated to OKW that CM's were more responsive to DVC members and guests. I sense that as more DVC resorts have come on line that the personnal attention has changed somewhat (being new I think I've been treated very nicely). So, I wonder if it's getting more and more difficult to be as responsive to us as they once were or if there is some other reason.

One other point, I'm also wondering if their booking system is sophisticated enought to take into account all of the variables necessary to meet our requests. I've never worked in the hospitality area but it ocurs to me that this may be difficult.

Love to hear all of your responses.

I have posted this before. I have been to BCV 3 times now and all 3 times was told that they are assigning rooms upon arrival. Unless there is something like a medical reason. So naturally, if you arrive earlier you have a better chance of getting a room that you might want. The reason they are doing this is because soooo many people were complaining that rooms were not ready upon arrival, this way they can give people an option when they arrive of rooms that are already clean and ready to occupy.

I don't like this, I really liked the 11 month booking advantage to get a good room and I would rather wait for the room that I really want then get in to a room I don't really want early.

When we checked in on July5th at BCV, our room was preassigned. Our only request was non-smoking. We had a dedicated 2bdrm with 2 Queens in the 2nd bdrm. We had to wait about 4 hours before our room was ready, which wasn't any big deal and we didn't expect to get it before 4pm anyway due to the holiday. At VWL, however, it seemed to be driven by whatever was available at checkin. We again only requested non-smoking and ended up with a smoking optional room, which was ready and my inlaws who checked in several hours after received a non-smoking room. Our reservation was made several months before theirs, so it seems that they were issuing rooms by what was currently available rather than by requests. We had even asked at checkin if there were any non-smokings available but just weren't cleaned yet and were told no. Our villa at OKW was preassigned as well and all requests were met. I've gotten to the point that as long as I get non-smoking, I don't really care. Even sitting on the balcony looking at the dumpster at VWL was better than being at work!

Brian...When we checked in at VWL earlier this summer, our room was clearly pre-assigned. That's the main reason that we couldn't get into it before 4:00 pm. IMHO, that's a fair trade off for our requests being considered when assigning rooms.

Just throwing my experience in here. In June we had reserved a studio. I requested non smoking, pool view. No real reason, just thought it might be interesting.

We arrived around 12pm and at check-in I was informed that a pool view studio was available, but not cleaned yet. I was then shown the locations of the remaining studios (I think there were 4) that were clean because we had been up since 4am and needed a break. I think had we been in the position to wait (ie not so tired) we would have been given exactly what we requested.

I was just there 2 weeks ago with an early arrival. They were checking people into anything not used the night before. Funny thing, dumpster view was available. I asked about waiting and location (I wanted close to the elevator) and was given some "areas" but not exact rooms and told the roon would be ready in a few hours.

I guess the bottom line is it is inconsistent. I assume this is similiar to the days I used to do newspaper layout design. You have x opening. Y have to be in a specific place but A,B, and C are interchangable. If you need Y, you are preassigned, if you need A. B or C you get what is ready in order to try and accommodate everyone at arrival time.
