Hello everyone. We just returned from our first trip to Beach Club Villas for 7 nights the first part of June. We had a couple of BIG negative surprises, but overall had a good trip. When we checked in around 2pm, we were given room 442 (2 BR 2Q partial Epcot view), but the room was not ready. I asked if it was non-smoking (the ONLY request I had made because of my allergies to smoke and smoke residue) and they said no, it is a "smoking optional" room. I freaked out because I was being put on the smoking floor and in a smoking room. They looked for something else, but all the two bedrooms were taken and this room was our only option. They said they would put an ionizer in the room. I also have an allergy to fragrance, so I was concerned with their method of "prepping the room for a non-smoker" would include a fragrance to mask the odor and thus complicate things even further for my breathing. The front desk let me talk to housekeeping/engineering and they said they would not use fragrance in prepping the room. When we were finally let into our room, the engineer had cleaned the rugs with water and had a blower going. Later the ionizer arrived. I turned off the equipment late in the evening to really get an idea of how the room was. I believe we had been fortunate enough to have a non-smoker stay in the room before us because there was no smell or residue of smoke. We had neighbors across the hall that smoked heavily in their villa and all the way down the hallway....if they had been in our room before us, I'm sure we would have had trouble and the ionizer would not have been enough.

Since the room wasn't ready, we had up to two hours to kill, but weren't eager to go to a park and come back later to a smoking room (not knowing what we would find and not knowing if we would need to move to another resort), so I sat in the lobby trying to gather myself and decide what to do. Almost immediately, we were approached by a research consultant wanting us to keep a diary for our stay. We decided to do it. Each day you turned in a sheet telling them where you went, what you spent, etc. and they gave you a gift. Since we have been gone and I haven't read the Disboards for a while and probably someone else has described this. The gifts were the pens shaped like Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, etc. You got a different one each day as you turned the sheets in. The final day you turned your whole diary in and they are suppose to be sending a gift in the mail...don't know what that will be. It appeared to be just those staying in the DVC who were being approached. We were rather obvious since you are handed a DVC welcome home packet when you check in.

Sorry, I know this is long. Now about the villa itself. Please don't flame me. Being brand new owners, sight unseen...I'm just giving you our observations and impressions. Above all of these notes, we still love the location of BCV and are glad we became owners. Now, back to the villa... We were surprised that the arms on the sofa in the living room had food stains on them. I would have thought they would have used spot remover and tried to fix things. The food was heavy enough you could scrap some of it off. Mostly red, so I'm guessing spaghetti. It was evident from the first morning that we did not have a refrigerator that was staying cold. Our milk and water just was "not warm", but not cool to the touch. We called engineering and they came to put a thermometer in it....registered 50+ degrees. He left and said he had another refrigerator and if it was cooler, he would change it out. Later he arrived with another refrigerator, registering about 40 degrees and it was a wet mess moving one out and the other one in. We used our bathroom towels to try to keep the water in the kitchen area and not get the rug wet. The engineer said housekeeping would come and clean up, plus bring us towels to replace the ones we had used. Later housekeeping did clean up and brought a "towel set" since we had nearly used all of them. I was impressed with the towel set...are they always such nice towels? (You guys who get them--please let me know!) They were fluffy and smooth like at home (not semi hard like the ones in the room). If so, I think it would be worth the money to purchase the use of the towel set while there for a week! There were some other things we noticed over the week and we left a small note letting them know the bathroom door lock did not work, a glass had a chipped rim and the refrigerator handle on our replacement refrigerator was loose. The partial Epcot view was fine. You could see some of the fireworks by looking toward the right. I know you guys had mentioned that the beds were hard at DVC. I like a firm bed, but it was a big shock to get stuck with a hard, uncomfortable bed at a "deluxe resort." We had been spoiled by Marriott Grand Vista's latex foam mattresses several years ago and had purchased one for ourselves, so I'm not sure why Disney would not be using a quality mattress like that (completely personal opinion). The layout of the bathroom in the MBR was awkward. I must say location of BCV next to Epcot was perfect (We LOVED being able to walk to Epcot...what a dream!!!!), but in regards to layout of a room, Marriott wins hands down. I was not impressed with the use of space in the Disney villa. However, with the location next to Epcot, I would put up with the smaller room and crazy bathroom layout. I was also a little surprised that the shower door is so narrow...seemed smaller than I recall the norm. Regarding the water pressure, everything seemed fine. We did notice that the shower head has several settings (as another poster mentioned) and one could change the flow of the water depending on what choice was made.

Our final surprise was at check out. I'm telling you this story just to warn those who like to pay cash rather than charge. When we bought our DVC purchase last summer, we were led through the reservation process the first time. Being totally new at this, when they asked for a Credit card, I gave them one. I'm used to hotels needing a CC to hold the room. Well, once you do that (and I don't know if you can get out of doing it during reservation), they can charge anything, anytime to your room during your stay without your permission. When we checked in, I told the front desk that we did NOT want anything charged to the room and our keys said "no charging privileges." Well, that doesn't mean that when you purchase E-Tickets for cash, that they CM cannot also charge your room (which is what happened to us). Being new to staying on Disney property, it was our first E-Ticket purchase and I didn't know that I needed to ask for a receipt. I just took the E-ticket cards given to me and gave the CM three twenties and she gave us the change from our purchase. When we checked out, the charge for the 4 tickets was on our room! Apparently, the CM can charge to your room without getting permission, so we paid twice...charged to the CC on our room and in cash. In trying to get things fixed, I have run into the giant that Disney is. Basically, they can do whatever they want to do and I have no recourse. I have talked to several departments and it is clear that they can charge as they so wish without letting you know what they are doing. So, BEWARE and get a receipt for anything you purchase such as E-tickets at the front desk. The strange thing is, the cash drawer of the CM that night was "even" they tell me. I don't have a clue why that would be unless at some point the $50+ was removed to make it even. Since the CM did not print out a cash receipt, she would not have to show that money in her cash drawer. A really sticky situation that I don't want anyone else to endure. It was quite a blow to us to get this surprise at the end of our trip and have no way to prove our side of it. What stops any front desk CM from charging against your room during your stay?....NOTHING! Apparently they don't need your signature or anything else...they can just do it--hard lesson learned.

Well, this was a mixed first trip and I hope we will have better things to report the next time. Our teen sons love SAB and we all loved being next to Epcot. It was so cool to enjoy Illuminations and then just WALK home!!! The afternoon T-showers were nice because it relieved the heat and gave us a nice evening to enjoy the parks.

Plus, we did notice that being at DVC we slowed down and got more rest rather than being at commando speed. Our older teens spent more time enjoying the resort and SAB. We stayed in touch with each other, and both our teens and us were able to go at varying rates to the parks via Disney transportation rather than forced to go as a group. Even with all the negatives, I would still have to say it was a good trip.

Thanks for listening!

This is confusing. If you are on a cash basis and being DVC why would they need a credit card?

You may want to challenge those charges with your credit card company.

Disney put a charge on my CC that was wrong once. One call to my bank and it was removed, no problem. Have you called the bank? They will reverse it and deal with Disney.

I hope your next trip home is a bit better. :D

Sorry to hear about the negatives. We usually bring one major cc with us on vacation, but then we also have a "check card" that we use for our cash purchases. I like to get home and print out all our activity from the bank web site and this, I find, is the best way to really keep track and have a paper trail of all transactions we did in WDW. I agree with contacting your bank and perhaps challenging those charges, though, without a receipt I don't know how easy a task that will be. Sorry to hear you had to go through this.
As for the smoking floors----is smoking in the hallways allowed ? I don't know why, but I never realized this. If this is indeed the case, I know I would never be able to tolerate a smoking optional room/floor.
You'll have to let us know what the gift is you get through the mail for completing the diary. Did you mention any of the above problems in your diary ? Just curious.
Thanks for the report :wave2:

So sorry for the negatives on your first trip. We went for our first time to BWV in Jan/Feb 04 and we had a clean room, wonderful service, and were quite pleased w/ our decision to own. I feel sad you can't say the same. I am sure the next time you visit, you will have a much better experience. Way to get the bad one out of the way right at the beginning. Ha Ha. ;) You should have wonderfully smooth trips from here on out.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your detailed report. I appreciate the heads up too.

Thanks for the report.
It's not "very, very long" (try the Trip Reports board sometime!), it's just "kinda long". And your comments are very welcome.

I completely sympathize with the smoking room situation. I would have freaked out worse than you did. I don't see how all the other 2BRs could have been "taken" by 2PM. I think it was just time to start forcing the unused smoking rooms on guests who didn't want them.

I guess the moral of the E-ticket story may be that paying cash is not a good strategy at WDW. They are set up to charge everything to your room, and most of time that works well. You can still have problems, but at least losing cash is not one of them.

I think you should have asked to speak to a manager about the smoking room. Managers at hotels can often make rooms appear out of thin air, even when the front desk assures you (ie., lies) that there is "just no way." I think they often try to give away the undesireable rooms first, to see if they can bully people into accepting them. Those who don't ask for the manager get the bad room, those who do ask for the manager get something better. (I'm basing this on experiences at other hotels, not Disney, but I'm sure that something similar happens there when they are at capacity.)

I'm glad to hear that your smoking room worked out okay. We were in a smoking room once at the BC and we couldn't tell it even though I, too, am very sensitive to smoke.

Sorry about your front desk experience. I hope you get it corrected. We like to pay cash on vacation too. We usually leave a credit card and have charging privileges. Then the night before we check out we go and pay all of our charges in cash. This way we have a receipt for all our charges and can verify our bill at the end of our stay. Maybe that would work for you too.

Thanks for your report.

Donna

Thanks for all your comments and advice!
When my credit card bill comes, I plan to challenge the charge. Also, when I reserve a room next time and they ask for a cc, I'm going to see if I can do it without giving them one. (We assumed that they needed a cc on file in case there was damage to the room, etc. but after our experience I'm not going to assume anything.)
I mentioned being given the smoking room on my diary and that we had reserved the non-smoking room at 11 months out and was very distraught that we did not receive it. (I am grateful that the room worked out for us anyway.) We had already turned in the diary before we knew about the cc charge to our room, so that was not mentioned. We checked in mid-week (nice airfare and low lines at the front desk) and I wonder if that is why we received the bottom of the barrel. All the good rooms were taken by the Sun-Thurs crowd(?). The CM that was checking me in said they didn't have any open rooms in the 2 BR class for two more nights. My guess is if I had been terribly dissappointed with the room, they would have let me move on Friday (after two nights) when a room opened up and paid the cleaning charge. Fortunately, we didn't have to fight for that because the room was okay. I also got the impression that if we got to the room and it was not okay, they would search through all the other DVC's to see what they had. Of course, our teens had their hearts set on SAB, so I was trying to see the positives and hopefully stay at BCV.
In regards to smoking in the hallway, we wondered about that, too. We guessed that if they would smoke in the hallway, they would probably smoke in the elevator/stairwell and not care. I appreciate the smokers who are genuinely thoughtful about others and do their best to be polite about where they smoke.
In regards to the dairy, when the gift arrives from Disney, I will post and let you know what we receive.
I agree that now we have gotten our first trip with all the surprises out of the way, we hope to have smooth sailing from now on!

I think I probably would have pushed the room issue a bit further as well. I'm hoping things go smoothly for us in November, as I have three rooms to check-in at BCV.

When DW and I honeymooned at YC back in '98, we checked out of YC to take a room at an Embassy Suites on Intl Drive, since we were basically done with the parks, and planned day trips to Daytona, US, and SW.

Our first night at Embassy Suites was horrible, so I called back over to YC to see if we could get a water view room for our last nights. They told me no problem, and we checked back in the next morning. When we got into the room it was a water-view room, but...they failed to notice that the trees had grown so high that the blocked most of the view of Crescent Lake. I called down to the desk and talked with a manager and explained the situation. In 10 minutes we had a CM escort us to a new room which was a corner room that looked right out onto Crescent Lake. If we had this room the previous 5 nights, I never would have checked out.

Sometimes it pays to do a bit of squeaking to the right people. Here's hoping your next stay is much better.

Brian

We always leave a CC and use charging privileges. The only charges we have ever had to our account that we hadn't signed for are telephone calls.

We were at BCV the first week of June, did e-night 6/2. I also bought my tickets at the BC desk. I remember signing a charge slip to charge the ticket to my room. Did you sign anything when you got your tickets?? If not, I'd question what happen to the signed authorization.

WELCOME HOME!!!

Please try to find some comfort in knowing that this is NOT a normal DVC experience. You had more problems in one trip than I have had in 25.

I'm sure you will have many, many great trips ahead. If I read you report correctly, you did have a good time in spite of all these problems. So look how much more fun a normal DVC trip will be.

We could not take a smoking room, we'd have to be out in the yard. Mom has asthma and hubby and I have allergies. Please save yourself future grief and reserve "MEDICAL reasons for non-smoking." This virtually guarantees you a non-smoking room and also "covers your fanny" should they assign you to a smoking room. It says to them up front, "Don't think you are putting me in a smoker room." I always say "medical non-smoking, allergies" and they note it. Never had any problem in many DVC trips.

Sorry for the troubles and glad you had a nice time nonetheless.

Hello all! My first post here.:wave2:

LoveToDisney, I am Sorry to hear about your problems with the Disney charging system. I have personally found it to be the most convenient part of my trip. I set up my account and use it the entire trip for meals and souveniers and only carry about $40.00 cash at any time for an occasional Dole Whip of Toll House ice cream cookie sandwich. I do however make sure that I collect my receipts each night and pile them up for a complete check when they delivery my closing bill to my door the day I check out. I have yet to have a problem. It has always been correct for us.

I was never given anything to sign at the BC desk, only given the E-Ticket cards and my change. Upon checkout, when I said I haven't signed a thing to charge--I paid cash!--they told me that the form I signed upon "check-in" gave them the authority to charge to the room anytime without a signature. I wish I had know that they do get signed authorizations when charges are made....I may have made better headway. They kept asking me to produce a cash receipt. Since I was so new to Disney, I didn't even know I was suppose to get a receipt at all with the E-Tickets. I was blocked every direction I turned when I tried to get past the desk manager to anyone else. When they showed me the charge for the E-tickets, it was just a new printout from the file. They never produced anything showing I had really charged it. From what I saw they could do to anyone what they did to me at any time they wanted since it required no signature.

Thanks for the advise. I will have to do that next time.

Thank you for your salutation. I am definitely looking forward to a normal DVC trip and all the extra fun one gets from being surprised with GOOD things!

they told me that the form I signed upon "check-in" gave them the authority to charge to the room anytime without a signature.

Can't be sure, but I think when you check-in and sign documents there are places you are asked to initial acknowledging authorization for charging. Also upon checkout you have the option to change payment to cash.

LoveToDisney, please post the end to this extra charge thing when it is resolved. You have posted some valuble information, and I thank you. This could easily happen to us! We have been told that we don't have to put a CC down on the room, but by giving it we are able to take advantage of express check-out.

I also appreciate the way you told us of the problems. As everyone has said, you seemed to hit the max in the problem department. I hope all of your future DVC trips are problem free!
