We just returned, flew Boston to Orlando and back, and I was able to leave the batteries in my digital camera. It was in my carry-on bag and nobody even took it out to look at it.
I'm pretty sure batteries are allowed unless you are flying to/from the UK (not sure if it's just England or the whole of the UK), in which case, nothing that has an on/off switch is allowed on the plane.

Just in case anyone is travelling to/from the UK soon the security threat level has been downgraded and electrical items are now allowed in hand luggage, but still no liquids - more info here
