Let me start off with the fact that I am no "home decorator" :) ... which is why I need the help of my friends over here on the Community Board. Someone here must have a talent, or at least watch enough HGTV ;).

I am buying bathroom towels, the first since before my DH and I were married 10 years ago. We recently had our bathroom retiled and the ratty towels are looking a wee bit shabby. I would like to buy 6 sets of all one color. My DH wants to buy 2 or even 3 colors of towels (there are 3 of us in the family, me, DH and 3 year old DD).

What should I do?

Here's a bonus question:
Will 6 sets be enough or should I buy more?

I have no idea if this is "right" in terms of decorating rules, but I voted for 3 colors. So long as they match it would look okay I would think. Or at least 2 colors.

One benefit to multiple colored towels is that if one of you is sick it's a good idea to have your "own" towel to prevent spreading germs, so that would make it a lot easier for those days.

I like having towels that are all the same color. They're easier to wash. If you have a combination of dark towels and light towels, you'll have to wash them separately or they'll start looking old fast. In fact, I'd buy either all white or all off-white. It's boring, but if you find you need a few more, you'll always be able to get more that match, even if you can't remember where you bought the first ones or if they've been discontinued.

The only good reason that I can think of for getting different colors is to make it easier to see whose towel is whose. As long as you have a system (like everyone gets a certain hook), that's not really a problem. Some people like each person to wash their own towels, but your DD won't be doing laundry for a while.

I like having different colors, but I never thought of it as having a color for each person. I have colorful wallpaper in my and DH's bathroom, and couldn't decide which color to go with for towels, so I just got six different colors!

As for whether six sets will be enough, I think it depends. We don't use very many washclothes or hand towels. We all take showers, not baths, and use those mesh scrubbie things to wash with, instead of washclothes. When we dry our hands after washing them, we do use hand towels, but they seem to last a while before they need washing. So we use bath towels the most. Instead of whole sets, I buy lots of bath towels, and then just a couple of wash clothes and hand towels that match.

I said 2 sets of different colors. why you ask, cause that is what I have. LOL I think that is the right way or at least in my eyes it is. :D :)

How about buying coordinating sets. Like solid yellow and blue and then maybe blue and yellow stripes. That way they would all be the same yet different. I think you can some like them this in most stores.

Our bathroom closet looks like Joseph's Coat of Many Colors!!:) We have any and every color, including a couple of sets of lighthouse towels!

We have over 30 each of towels, hand towels, and washrags. I don't know how many of you there are in your family - or how often you do towel laundry, I do ours about every other day. Somedays we each take two showers and DD and I also use bath towels for our hair.

I have to say that I love using the ratty towels for my hair, they are thinner and absorb the water much faster, after 20 years of marriage (next week!), DH has been sneaking and throwing away all of our ratty towels. I managed to hide 2 back!
