Speaking of people using the restroom…

Honestly, this issue never occurred to me until a couple years ago
To me a bathroom is a bathroom and easy enough to clean. But I am guessing there will be people in both camps.

Do you allow people doing work in your house to use your restroom?

The HVAC guy we always request for our maintenance initially asked to use our restroom while he was here and I always said sure. Now after several years he doesn’t even ask, he just uses it. I’m fine with it. Those people work out of their vans and often travel from house to house in remote areas. If the guy needs my bathroom, I have no problem with it.

A friend of mine had a repair man over one time and he asked to use her restroom. She let him but she was appalled. She posted it on social media how she couldn’t believe his nerve. And said she stood outside the door with her phone ready to call 911. 🤷‍♀️ I mean, what did she think he was doing in there that might be a threat to her? She had people on both sides of the issue giving their opinion. I believe I just said sure why not?

We have a plumber who when he comes over if we have to leave we just tell him lock the door on his way out. Maybe it’s the fact we have service people who we have become comfortable with, I don’t know.

If I really think about it, I guess since at my jobs I have always had access to a comfortable restroom, I would hate for someone to be uncomfortable doing their job. And I know my parents would have never denied anyone anything they needed.
I’m interested in hearing people’s thoughts on this.

I've not had a worker ask for usage of the restroom but they would certainly be free to use it.

I have offered bottled water although no one has taken up the offer yet.

I do think most workers try not to utilize a customer's restroom just out of professional courtesy but if you need to go you need to go, I'd rather they be able to work well and not try to rush it because they are uncomfortable or have to feel like they need to leave to go use one and then come back. It's not a big deal at all to me for them to use it.

Exactly

Always. I remember my general contractor offered to put on port o pot on my lawn or I could have the all day contractors use my bathroom - yeah, this was the easiest call ever for not being "that" neighbor...apparently, some do choose incorrectly...

If anyone is doing short-term work in my house, I wouldn't mind. Now, I rent an apartment, so this isn't something I've come across, but I think if it was long-term work, I think having a port-a-potty on the premises is acceptable. Of course, if people think I'm wrong, I'm interested in hearing the other side. It's all theoretical for me anyway.

We remodeled our entire house. Took from October to June. Two of the three bathrooms, kitchen, all doors, flooring were being redone. Contractor wanted to put a port a potty out front. Last thing we wanted was a port a potty out front for 8 months, although neighbors who did similar work did do that. The one bathroom that was not being remodeled was available for workers to use.

I always let them if they need to. If someone is going to be in the house for a while, I’ll point out the guest bathroom, so they don’t have to ask. My wife? Not so much. She lets them, but then comments about it for days.

When you gotta go you gotta go.
With that said I've never had a maintenance person ask to use the bathroom.
Then again I've barely needed maintenance person to come to my home and when I have its a short period of time that they are here.

I don't have a problem with people using a bathroom. I will say that one time an HVAC guy asked to use the bathroom at our old house. Afterward he said thanks and quickly left out the back door. I think he was embarrassed. Let's just say it took 1/2 a can of air freshener before I could get in there to do a thorough cleaning! :rotfl2:

If workers are doing any kind of interior work, I think it just makes sense to allow them to use your bathroom. Usually when they arrive to start working, I will point out where the guest bathrooms are to avoid any confusion. For something like new home construction which they are doing in our development, it is common practice to have a port-a-potty since the plumbing isn't yet connected and it takes about 6 months from start to finish. If someone is doing extensive interior renovations where the water will be shutoff/disconnected for a long period of time, it probably makes sense when signing the contract to ask if they will provide facilities. Local codes may indicate what needs to be done.

Using the facilities is less common for exterior work (i.e. landscaping/grass cutting/painting/roofing/etc.) and we may not be at work during the day while those things are taking place.

I was having some remodel work done in my house and they were welcome to use either of the two guest bathrooms.

i also didn’t care if they used the microwave- until one day I came home and saw food down the counter and on the floor. I opened the microwave and something has exploded in it. After that, I told the contractor I would prefer they did not use the microwave.

the drywall crew /sub contractor of this same contractor took a remote controlled floor fan out of my bedroom and used it to dry the drywall, I guess. The black fan was white and was not cleanable. It worked but I was not happy. I mean who takes a homeowners fan?

I have never had one ask, but 99% of the work I have had done was exterior work. I live in a small subdivision with commercial facilities available at the entrance, so I always assumed they stopped on the way in. I don’t feel very comfortable having strangers in my home to begin with, so I probably would say no.

My husband always does everything so we’ve never had to have anybody come in to do work but if we did I would let them use our bathroom. We only have 1 bathroom in our house. We have another bathroom out in our detached garage but I would let them use the one in the house.
