Yea - the yankees stuck their noses back into the AL East last night - him and Dotel - that was a decent night! GRRR

MISSY - I dont know if I can sit through another Subway series - oh wait - what happens if they are still on strike - do we call it "The Artist Formally known as the Subway Series"?

Ok - I know - im ahead of myself right now talking series!

The 2 Yankee fans I spoke with this morning were not thrilled with the Damon acquisition. They feel that he is the wrong defensive fit for the stadium. I can only hope.

I couldn't stand seeing BELHORN shaved and in a Yankee uniform, how do I handle seeing Damon!

I agree with those Yankee fans--I think they could have been OK with Bubba & Bernie. and maybe making a trade in June/July. Or even waiting until next year & going after Andruw Jones (which would have helped the Mets too!) But I guess they figured this way they would have a decent CF & a great lead off man, plus weaken Boston a bit.

I guess thats it for the rock star mentality and looks and its back to this for Johnny:

damon_johnny_6x9.jpg

and this from the National Media :

Damon has an significant speed edge on Williams, and is unlikely to decline as sharply on defense as Williams did (few players have). Neither player has a good arm; Damon is one of the few replacements for Williams the Yankees could have acquired who doesn’t provide much of an upgrade in their center field throwing. Damon, like Nomar Garciaparra, got a big boost from Fenway Park, on the order of 50 points of batting average and OBP the last three seasons. The Yankees aren’t really getting a .310/.370/.450 guy so much as they’re getting a .285/.345/.425 guy. It’s the difference between a star and a solution, or millions of dollars and a couple of wins a year.

Like many free-agent contracts, the problem with this one isn’t the immediate future. Damon is enough of an upgrade on the available options to help the Yankees in 2006. As he declines, however, he will present the dual problem of hurting the team in center while not hitting enough to be a viable option on an outfield corner. I don’t see where a 34-year-old Johnny Damon is going to return enough value to be worth $13 million, meaning he’ll be just another aging Yankee in decline at the back end of this deal.

Why don't we have a puke smiley on the DIS?

I HATE THIS DAMON DEAL! I did not want Johnny Damon on the Yankees! I despise Damon as an individual and don't think it's just because he was a Red Sux. I hated him in Kansas City and Oakland too. He's an obnoxious, arrogant, sleazoid and the thought of him playing the most prestigeous position in all of sports, center fielder for the New York Yankees; treading in the footsteps of Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and yes, Bernie Williams makes me physically ill.

On to the actual baseball reasons: I truly wanted a top-notch DEFENSIVE center fielder. The Yankees did not need another bat; they needed defense. Now we can have FOUR years of the opposition running from 1st to 3rd on a single on Damon's powder-puff arm. The ONLY consolation I feel over this is that Damon wasn't the Yanks' first choice. Brian Cashman tried to get the best available CF, IMO when they tried to get Aaron Rowand from the White Sox but no trading match was possible. (I wanted Rowand very badly but I didn't want Cash to give up Wang and/or Cano.) I truly wanted the Yanks to muddle through '06 with Bubba and Bernie and wait for Andruw Jones to be a free agent. (Missy, you and I really are on the same wavelength, even if we're fans of opposing teams. I've wanted AJ in pinstripes since I first saw him in '96!) In truth, if the Yankees' pitching does what it's supposed to do, there was no need for additional offense. And, if the pitching doesn't do its job, they're not going anywhere anyway.

Chalk this one up there with the Giambi signing as one that will come back to bite the Yanks in the you-know-where. I hope I have to eat my words, but I don't think so.

I guess we've all been busy. But I just heard this on the radio, and thought I'd share this New York Post story:
METS ON BRINK OF BAEZ TRADE
By JOEL SHERMAN

In a move that could give the Mets perhaps the finest 1-2 closing punch in the National League, GM Omar Minaya is working to finalize a trade that would bring Danys Baez from Tampa Bay to serve as the primary set-up man for Billy Wagner, The Post has learned.

The Mets have spoken regularly to the Devil Rays for weeks about both Baez and shortstop Julio Lugo, who the Mets would play at second base. But over the last few days, the Mets have narrowed their focus to Baez, who had more saves for Tampa last season (41) than Wagner did for Philadelphia (38).

The Devil Rays would receive a package in return that would be headed by either Jae Seo or Aaron Heilman.

The Mets prioritized fixing their late-inning bullpen this offseason. That process began by securing Wagner, the best reliever on the free-agent market. If the Mets had not obtained Wagner, Baez was near the top of their list to acquire to become their closer. So the Mets would consider it a coup to have Baez pitching in the eighth inning.

If they did not include Heilman in the trade — and they have been very resistant all offseason to move the young righty — the Mets would have a late-game trio of Heilman, Baez and Wagner that combined for a 2.17 ERA in 2005, allowing just 161 hits in 216 innings.

Baez, 28, has 96 saves over the past three seasons, the sixth most in the majors. Though he throws hard (in the 93-95 mph) and has a strong split, Baez is not an overpowering strikeout pitcher and he does fight wildness at times.

On the other hand, the Yankees will attest to Baez's quality. Baez was 7-for-7 in save chances against the Yanks last year and in 11 games covering 12 innings, he did not permit an earned run.

Danys is agreat closer - I hate to lose him

An update on the Mets search for more bullpen help (from today's Newsday):

Unable to complete a deal for Tampa Bay's Danys Baez, the Mets have turned West to fill their void for a setup man. According to officials from two major-league clubs, the Mets had all but finalized a trade to land Duaner Sanchez from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In return for Sanchez, a 26-year-old righthander, the Mets will surrender righthander Jae Seo, the officials said. The trade will probably be announced by the end of this week.

Sanchez pitched in 79 games for the Dodgers in 2005, going 4-7 with a 3.73 ERA, walking 36 and striking out 71 in 82 innings. He throws a fastball that reaches about 95 mph on the radar gun, and he also displays a curveball, slider and changeup. He instantly becomes the Mets' primary setup man to new closer Billy Wagner.

With two-plus years of service time, Sanchez is not yet eligible for arbitration, a further asset for the Mets, who would still take Boston's ultra-expensive outfielder Manny Ramirez in the right deal.

Seo, 28, went 8-2 with a 2.59 ERA for the Mets last season, starting 14 games.

The Mets spent extensive time pursuing Baez, the Devil Rays' hard-throwing closer, and ultimately grew frustrated enough to look elsewhere. The Devil Rays preferred Aaron Heilman to Seo, and the Mets wanted to keep Heilman, who flourished last season. Heilman can now become the Mets' seventh-inning pitcher, further strengthening the club's weakest unit of 2005.

With their setup man acquired, the Mets can focus on their last significant task of the offseason - upgrading at second base. They'd like to unload Kazuo Matsui - Boston and Tampa Bay have expressed interest, and the Mets are offering to pay $5 million of Matsui's $8 million salary - and find someone else to play the position.

I really like what they are doing to the Pen Missy - do you think they could land Cantu from the Rays in exchange for Matsui - Cantu can play! I really am not a Kaz fan!

Are you going to opening day?

I'm not sure. The only time I got to Opening Day was 2001. I bought the tickets on ebay--$70 for a pair, and Dad & I were in the Upper Deck. But it was worth every penny to watch them raise the NL Pennant! And to see Mike Piazza hit a homer and beat the Braves. Maybe next year to watch them raise the World Series flag!

I love what they're doing. They have a plan and they are sticking to it. I like Jae Seo, but I like Heilman more. I don't care who's planning 2nd as long as it's not Matsui.

Yes - I was at that game - A Man by the name of SHHHHIIINNNNNJJJJOOOO hit a homer as well! LOL!

I have to be there this year - I am off for a week and a half and I want to get to opening day because I go to Europe for a week and im not going to get my Mets fix out there - just when the season starts too - when you need to watch every pitch! LOL!

Mets in WS in October! I feel it - 20 years since 86 - October 27 1986 was when Orosco threw his glove to the moon!!! AHHH!
