The last two mornings we've had to keep our garage door closed all day because of these two barn swallows that are determined to relocate in the loft of our garage.

There was a barn up the street that was torn down so new houses could be built and apparently they must've come from there.:(

This morning I opened up the garage to start my car and the barn swallows must of been waiting and as soon as the garage opened, they flew in . .:earseek:

Anyone have any ideas on how to deter these two beautiful birds, that seem to like people, not to build or hang around in our garage?

We also have a family of barn swallows living in the eaves of our victorian home. We have repaired them often(after baby bird season) and the "babies" always return with their families. This has been going on for 6 years now. We have come to accept that our home is their home. And, by the way, the squirrels take over their home when they vacate! I once called the local animal rescue and they said that barn swallows will always find a way in, especially if they were born in a particular area. Good luck!!

Wishing everyone a "magical" day!!

I'm not sure how to deter them, but I thought that I would share a little story about some Barn Swallows up here in MN!

There was a news story on one of our local stations not long ago about some Barn Swallows that found an interesting place to set up their home. These Barn Swallows figured out how to swoop in front of the motion detector on an automatic door at the local Home Depot store!! They showed the birds swoop in front of the motion sensor, circle around in perfect time and fly threw the door before it shut. It was totally amazing and while they were taping the segement for the news, it happened many, many times!

Pretty crazy, huh...and it shows how smart these little birds really are!

I tried to find some information about getting rid of them on Google but only found how to attract them. They eat a copious amount of insects and may prove beneficial to your gardens and life in general. Anything that goes after mosquitos is a keeper to me. :p

There are actually sites that sell artificial nests for these birds. Are you sure you want to get rid of them?

Anyway, here's a link that tells all about them.

I also did a search and found ways of keeping them . .lol But it would be different for us if they were in the shed or something and not the garage . . .DH I'm sure does not want (I know he does not want) barn swallow poop all over his precious Liberty. :earseek:

They are pretty and seem to not mind us humans, but it's kinda freaky seeing them swoop in and sit on the edge of the loft just looking at ya . . .
